Chapter 5

Author: Anonymous
Derrick froze for a moment, staring down at the divorce papers without speaking for a long time.

The corner of the papers was already creased in his grip.

"Very well-prepared with your props, aren't you?"

He flung the divorce papers hard against my face.

"You think I'd believe you? You threaten me with divorce every time. Do you really think I won't go through with it? You didn't come home last night, ignored my messages, and refused to answer my calls. I haven't even settled that score with you yet. There's a limit to how much you can act out!"

I caught the falling papers and couldn't even be bothered to argue. "I mean it this time."

I stubbornly handed the divorce papers back to Derrick and repeated myself. "I really want a divorce. Since you like Jessica so much, I might as well step aside and let you two be together."

Derrick instantly flew into a rage and tore the papers to shreds right in front of me.

"Jessie and I are innocent! There's nothing going on between us! You'r

Derrick's strength was overwhelming, and his movements were hasty and reckless. He completely disregarded my consent. But I had practiced martial arts for years before I met Derrick and had only put up a front of being weak. Having had enough, I kicked him. He only rolled to the side from the impact, but it seemed to have knocked some sense into him."I just… I just can't accept it! Do I not compare to any of those men outside?"I spoke calmly, catching my breath."Was one miscarriage not enough? Do you want me to go through another one?"His hand froze midair. Both of us were thinking about my first miscarriage. Derrick was fast to respond. He was almost obsessive, even. "Don't worry. It won't happen again this time."The very next second, Crystal kicked the door open. "Fear not, Clarisse! I'm here to save you!"As she helped me up, she instructed the others behind her, "Do you see that man? Beat him up!"None of them held back. In the end, Derrick landed in the hosp

He lowered his head and pulled a fabric charm from his pocket. It was the very one Jessica had once tossed into the trash. But now, its colors were slightly faded, as though someone had carried it close for a long time."I've actually kept the charm you gave me with me for years. I found out what really happened back then. Jessie had set you up, and I've fired Luther for siding with her. I won't see her again. All I want is to be with you."I haven't been sleeping well this past month. Without you by my side, I just can't seem to fall asleep. I dream about you doing the laundry, cooking, and putting every corner of the house in order. It felt so warm back then, but now it's just cold—""Stop." I cut him off. "What exactly are you here for?"Derrick grabbed my hand, unwilling to let go. He had a certain desperation in his eyes. "I don't want you to leave me…"I fell silent for a moment as I struggled to free my hand from his grasp."There's no need for this. Just like this fab

I saw Derrick again.Maryanne immediately recognized him as the man who had bought the house next door. Worried that something might happen to me, she stubbornly refused to leave. So the three of us sat facing one another in my living room.In just a month, Derrick had grown noticeably thinner, with heavy dark circles under his eyes.It was fall now, yet he wore only a thin long-sleeved shirt. However, the commanding presence he had built over many years in the business world was hard to ignore. He motioned for Maryanne to leave, but I held her hand and shook my head."If there's anything you have to say, say it."His gaze was dark, calm, and fixed right on me. "I finally meet you again, Claire."Claire. It had been so long since I'd last heard that nickname. Derrick only ever called me by my name. The only exception was when we were in bed. He would call me Claire over and over again in the heat of passion, turning it into a word heavy with seduction. Hearing it now, ther

A month later, I had settled into a peaceful life in a small town and decided to pick up my old hobbies again. I decided to start a flower shop and try my hand at making clothes again.Soon, everyone knew that a wealthy woman living on her own had moved into town. Many locals tried to get close to me, and upon realizing I was young and easy to talk to, they hoped to introduce me to their sons. I turned each and every one of them down. Years of marriage had extinguished any desire I had for love. Whenever the thought crossed my mind, Derrick's face would involuntarily surface, making me sick to my stomach.Though I had moved and started my shop alone, I had the enthusiastic locals who had helped me with each step along the way to thank. I took a deep breath. This was the smell of freedom. My past self must have been out of her mind.Just as I finished getting everything ready, Crystal called."Derrick is such a pain! He refuses to sign the papers, no matter what. I've spent an

Jessica shook her head. "Don't be like that, Ricky. Claryboo didn't do anything to me."The sickly sweet way she addressed me disgusted me.I took a step back and said, "You heard her. I didn't do anything."But Derrick's expression only darkened further. He pointed at me and rebuked, "Do you think I'd believe you? I just saw you trying to push her. You've always had it out for her. "She hasn't shown up in front of you for so long, and now you're at it again. You even dare to lay hands on her in front of me? You've really been spoiled rotten!"All I had done was try to free my hand from Jessica's grasp, and I received a scolding from Derrick for that. It was ridiculous. Even Jessica stood smugly behind him, looking at me triumphantly. This wasn't the first time he had taken her side. I was reminded of the hand-sewn fabric charm I made him back then. That had been my first attempt at sewing something, and it had taken me a whole week of effort just to produce the charm. I had
