Chapter 4

Author: Pumpkin King
At 5:00 am, a medical transport vehicle pulled up in front of the inpatient building, and a nurse helped me load my suitcase into the trunk. Inside, there were only a few articles of clothing, my medical records, and the camera I had originally intended to use to photograph the snow-capped mountains.

Meanwhile, the group chat with Boaz, Drake, Evans, Finley, and me was buzzing, as lively as if they were throwing a whole party without me.

Cindy had posted a selfie taken at the airport. She hadn't asked anyone for help, beaming with bright, uninhibited energy. She wore a mountaineering backpack and held a suitcase in each hand.

Drake said immediately, "Look at Cindy—and then look at someone who can't even carry her own water bottle when she goes out."

Finley chimed in.

"If Arianna were even half as low-maintenance as Cindy, we wouldn't have had to resort to this."

Evans added, "That's enough. She'll just have another 'episode' if she sees this."

Boaz didn't defend me. He simply liked Cindy's selfie without a word.

So, the moment he held no more love for me, even my being ill was being reframed as a "lack of independence". They had forgotten that I wasn't the one asking to be taken care of on all our past trips.

It was Boaz who forbade me from carrying a backpack, Drake who wouldn't let me wander off, and Finley who insisted on carrying my water bottle. Even Evans would bring my medicine to my lips right on schedule.

They had given me the illusion that I was the one being cherished. And now, they blamed me for believing it.

I exited the group chat and deleted it. However, a message from Boaz popped up instantly.

"Still throwing a tantrum, are you? If you really want to see the snow-capped mountains that badly, I'll take you myself once we're back."

A second message followed immediately. "But you need to get your health back in order first. Don't end up being a burden to everyone along the way."

I stared at the screen for a few seconds, then deleted his contact information.

Next, I deleted Drake, Evans, and Finley from my contact list as well. All 18 years of our friendship were wiped clean in less than a minute.

As the transport vehicle traveled along the airport expressway, a passenger plane soared overhead.

Another text then arrived from Cindy.

"Ari! I'll send the photo of the 'golden mountain' at sunrise to you the moment I capture it! Don't blame them for this. They just wanted things to be a little easier for them."

I didn't reply.

I no longer blamed them. I wasn't waiting for them anymore, either.

When I arrived at the hospital in another city, it was just beginning to get light.

The lead surgeon went over the risks once more. She said, "There is a possibility of severe arrhythmia during the surgery, and there is also a chance you might not wake up.

"Are you still unable to get a hold of any of your family members?

"I have no family members," I replied, signing my name on the surgery consent form.

As the nurse took my phone from me, a call came in from Boaz. I hadn't intended to answer, but she accidentally hit the speakerphone button.

Boaz's impatient voice echoed through the hospital hallway.

"Arianna, how much longer are you going to keep this up? We're about to take off. If you come to the airport now, you might still catch a glimpse of the plane.

"How about I take you to see the snow-capped mountains once I'm back?"

I asked him softly, "Do you still remember why I wanted to see the snow-capped mountains so badly?"

Silence came from the other end. He didn't remember.

When I was 17 years old, I lay in the intensive care unit after a failed surgery. It was Boaz who held my hand back then and said, "Once you get better, I'll take you to see the most beautiful snow-capped mountains in the world."

I waited for seven years. But in the end, he took someone else in my stead.

In the background, an announcement at the airport urged passengers to board. Boaz hurriedly tossed out a final remark.

"We'll talk when I get back."

Then the line went dead.

I turned off my phone and handed it to the nurse. The gurney moved down the long hallway, overhead lights flashing one after another.

The surgeon confirmed it with me one last time.

"Arianna Dawson, 24 years old. Do you have no family accompanying you?"

"No, I don't."

Just before the anesthesia mask was lowered over my face, I saw a plane outside the window soaring into the clouds.

They finally had the trip they wanted, completely unburdened by me.

And I, at last, was no longer a trouble to anyone.

The cold doors of the operating room slowly closed behind me.

As the anesthetic was pushed into my veins, I heard the surgeon shout urgently, "Her blood pressure is dropping. Ventricular fibrillation. Prepare for defibrillation."

The next second, the world went completely black.

Boaz ran up to me, gasping for breath. "I promise I won't bother you on the trip, Ari. Can I just… Can I just follow from a distance? Is that okay?"I glanced at his boarding pass. He was sitting in the same row as me.So, this was what he meant by "following me from a distance"."Get a refund," I said curtly. He shook his head. "No. I've waited three months, Ari. I waited downstairs when you wouldn't answer my calls. I kept watch at the entrance when you wouldn't let me into the hospital."I've changed, Ari. I truly have!"Before I could respond, an announcement blared over the airport's PA system. There was an irregularity with Boaz's flight booking, and it required re-verification. Staff members hurried over and intercepted him before he could board. As it turned out, he had managed to get his ticket by pulling strings just to squeeze into the photography tour group. The tour organizer immediately revoked his spot.Boaz's expression darkened. "I can pay extra."The organiz

The hallway was deathly quiet.Boaz covered his face with his hands, unable to speak for a long time.Cindy looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Arianna. I knew they didn't want to bring you along, but I had no idea they were using the money meant for your surgery. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone with them at all."I put away my phone. "You don't need to apologize on their behalf."She shook her head, saying, "No. I'm at fault, too. When they praised me for being 'independent' and compared me to you, I actually felt quite proud at the time. I never even bothered asking why you weren't coming along."She paused."Being brave doesn't mean taking someone else's place and then pretending not to notice it. And for that, I owe you this apology."She spoke with complete candor, and I responded with equal calm."Alright. I accept your apology."The four men froze in unison.Finley's eyes reddened as he exclaimed, "Why is it okay for her? Why are you only forgiving her?""Because

Drake was the first to sign the settlement agreement. Soon, the 265 thousand dollars, plus interest and legal fees, was transferred back into my account.Money had never been the issue for them. That wasn't the debt that was truly hard to repay.Finley set down his pen after signing the agreement, his eyes rimmed red. He said, "Arianna, we've known each other for so many years. Does it really have to come to this?"I was the one who defended you when you got bullied as a kid. Have you already forgotten about that?I looked at him and said, "I haven't. That's why I never once pressed you for the 50 thousand dollars you borrowed from me."Yet, when I told you that I needed to be hospitalized, you just complained that I was a killjoy."Finley opened his mouth, but no words came out.Drake shifted his chair forward. He said, "I didn't realize you were actually having a medical emergency at the hotel the other day. If I had known, I would have taken you to the hospital at once."I l

Boaz refused to leave. He blocked the nurses' station and demanded, "I just want to take one look at Arianna. I won't say a word. I won't even go inside."The nurse's expression remained cold. She said, "Sir, this is a hospital, not your home. The patient specifically said she doesn't want to see you. That means she doesn't want to see you."Finley slammed his hand on the counter. "She just came out of surgery. She's not in her right mind. We've known her for 18 years. What right do you have to stop us?""The fact that the patient is a consenting adult with the right to have her wishes respected," a woman's voice rang out from the end of the hospital hallway. It was my lead surgeon, Dr. White. She approached them with a medical chart in her hand. "And besides, who told you that she wasn't in her right mind?"All four men crowded around her at once."Doctor, how is she? When will she wake up?"Dr. White didn't answer. Instead, she held out a folded sheet of paper."These are the

Boaz's phone slipped from his hand. The screen hit the floor, leaving a jagged crack across it.Drake shot to his feet, exclaiming, "What do you mean, Arianna's heart stopped? What's the situation now? Did they manage to revive her?"The nurse didn't answer. She simply said, "That is confidential patient information. You have no right to inquire about it."Then, the line went dead.Silence descended on the four of them.Cindy pulled off her oxygen mask. "Ari had surgery?"Evans explained in a low voice. He said, "Heart surgery. It was supposed to be paid for with that 260 thousand dollars."Cindy stared at them as if seeing them in a new, ugly light for the first time. She asked in horror, "So, the reason she couldn't afford her surgery is because of the four of you?"Finley ran a hand through his hair, looking agitated. "We didn't actually spend the money. We were planning to pay her back as soon as we got back.""As soon as we got back?" Cindy echoed, letting out a sharp, in

Just as Boaz arrived at the town by the snow-capped mountains in the Northern Pole, he received a payment demand letter from my lawyer, Gustav Clayton. The summons simply stated that the amount of 265 thousand dollars had to be repaid within 24 hours, or a lawsuit would follow.Finley glanced at it and laughed. "Tsk, look at her, getting bold enough to hire a lawyer just to scare us."Drake didn't take it seriously either. He said, "She's only got about 300 dollars left in her account. How could she possibly afford a lawyer?"Evans, however, kept his eyes fixed on the attachment, his expression growing increasingly grim."There are the IOUs, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and everything. She attached them all. This is the real deal."The group fell silent.Of course, they could afford to pay it back. In fact, the money was still sitting untouched in each of their respective accounts. They hadn't borrowed the money because they were short on cash. They simply knew that
