Chapter 3

Author: Pumpkin King
If I wanted to transfer to a different hospital, I needed my original ID card and medical records, but Boaz had taken them when he grabbed my passport.

I called over a dozen times, but he didn't answer at all.

Eventually, Finley sent me a hotel address and said, "We're hosting a send-off party for Cindy. If you need something, come over yourself."

The private room was as boisterous as a New Year's Countdown party. Cindy stood atop a chair, popping open a bottle of champagne with one hand.

As the champagne sprayed out, she laughed and jumped down, met by a chorus of cheers.

"You're such a legend, Cindy!"

"Yeah! Don't go leaving all four of these guys in the dust once you hit the snowy mountains!"

She lost her footing upon landing, and Boaz instinctively reached out to catch her. They collided, and both burst into laughter.

I stood at the doorway, sticking out like a sore thumb. Someone recognized me and said, "So, is this the clingy thing who insisted on tagging along no matter what?"

"I heard she has a heart condition, and that the four of them would have to take shifts just to look after her."

"Honestly, I'd be worried too. Who could handle bringing such a high-maintenance princess along on a graduation trip with them?"

Finley didn't stop them when he heard their words. Instead, he chuckled and remarked, "She's just been spoiled rotten by us since she was a kid."

They used to say that I wasn't a burden and that I was the most important person in their lives. But now, to prove how wonderful Cindy was compared to me, they recast me as inescapable dead weight.

I walked up to Boaz. "Give me back my documents."

He didn't budge. "You must first promise us that you will not come after us no matter what."

"I need to transfer to a different hospital."

Drake let out a derisive laugh. He sneered, "Is this a new excuse of yours, Arianna? You should be more creative."

Evans took off his glasses and rubbed his brow, looking weary. He said, "Come on, Arianna, it's not that we don't want you to travel with us. It's just that Cindy is more independent and has the stamina to keep up with every activity.

"If you come, we'll be spending every single day guessing when you might start feeling unwell. How could anyone actually enjoy themselves like that?"

A sharp, twisting pain suddenly pierced through my chest. I gripped the edge of the table, reaching for my emergency medication with my other hand.

Someone behind me wasn't paying attention and bumped into my shoulder, and the pill bottle rolled into an ice bucket. I crouched down to retrieve it, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't even get a firm hold on the rim of the bucket.

Boaz yanked me upright.

"That's enough. Do you really have to have an 'episode' right now, just because we said a few nice things about Cindy?"

I looked up at him. "You think I'm faking it?"

He shrugged. "It's always the same thing happening every time we go out. Either you get dizzy, or your chest feels tight.

"We get tired too, you know."

Cindy's smile faded. She started to reach out to help me, but Boaz blocked her.

"Leave her be. The more attention she gets, the more she plays it up."

In the end, a waiter delivering a meal noticed how unwell I looked and called an ambulance.

By the time the ambulance arrived, the group was already preparing to head to a hotel near the airport.

Boaz handed my identification documents to the nurse, then leaned in to whisper a warning to me, saying, "Fine, go to the hospital if you want, but don't you dare make a scene. Cindy has been looking forward to this trip for a long time."

I had been looking forward to it, too, for three whole years, but they didn't care at all.

In the ambulance, the doctor asked me if I wanted to contact my family. I watched through the window as the five of them walked away, side by side.

"I have no family."

…

At the hospital, a nurse handed me a surgery consent form. In the space for an emergency contact, I slowly wrote a single word—"None".

A notification popped up on my phone.

Cindy sent a photo of the five of them raising their glasses and wrote, "Next stop—the Northern Pole!"

Boaz even tagged me in the chat and said, "If you've come to your senses, head to the airport and see us off now."

Boaz ran up to me, gasping for breath. "I promise I won't bother you on the trip, Ari. Can I just… Can I just follow from a distance? Is that okay?"I glanced at his boarding pass. He was sitting in the same row as me.So, this was what he meant by "following me from a distance"."Get a refund," I said curtly. He shook his head. "No. I've waited three months, Ari. I waited downstairs when you wouldn't answer my calls. I kept watch at the entrance when you wouldn't let me into the hospital."I've changed, Ari. I truly have!"Before I could respond, an announcement blared over the airport's PA system. There was an irregularity with Boaz's flight booking, and it required re-verification. Staff members hurried over and intercepted him before he could board. As it turned out, he had managed to get his ticket by pulling strings just to squeeze into the photography tour group. The tour organizer immediately revoked his spot.Boaz's expression darkened. "I can pay extra."The organiz

The hallway was deathly quiet.Boaz covered his face with his hands, unable to speak for a long time.Cindy looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Arianna. I knew they didn't want to bring you along, but I had no idea they were using the money meant for your surgery. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone with them at all."I put away my phone. "You don't need to apologize on their behalf."She shook her head, saying, "No. I'm at fault, too. When they praised me for being 'independent' and compared me to you, I actually felt quite proud at the time. I never even bothered asking why you weren't coming along."She paused."Being brave doesn't mean taking someone else's place and then pretending not to notice it. And for that, I owe you this apology."She spoke with complete candor, and I responded with equal calm."Alright. I accept your apology."The four men froze in unison.Finley's eyes reddened as he exclaimed, "Why is it okay for her? Why are you only forgiving her?""Because

Drake was the first to sign the settlement agreement. Soon, the 265 thousand dollars, plus interest and legal fees, was transferred back into my account.Money had never been the issue for them. That wasn't the debt that was truly hard to repay.Finley set down his pen after signing the agreement, his eyes rimmed red. He said, "Arianna, we've known each other for so many years. Does it really have to come to this?"I was the one who defended you when you got bullied as a kid. Have you already forgotten about that?I looked at him and said, "I haven't. That's why I never once pressed you for the 50 thousand dollars you borrowed from me."Yet, when I told you that I needed to be hospitalized, you just complained that I was a killjoy."Finley opened his mouth, but no words came out.Drake shifted his chair forward. He said, "I didn't realize you were actually having a medical emergency at the hotel the other day. If I had known, I would have taken you to the hospital at once."I l

Boaz refused to leave. He blocked the nurses' station and demanded, "I just want to take one look at Arianna. I won't say a word. I won't even go inside."The nurse's expression remained cold. She said, "Sir, this is a hospital, not your home. The patient specifically said she doesn't want to see you. That means she doesn't want to see you."Finley slammed his hand on the counter. "She just came out of surgery. She's not in her right mind. We've known her for 18 years. What right do you have to stop us?""The fact that the patient is a consenting adult with the right to have her wishes respected," a woman's voice rang out from the end of the hospital hallway. It was my lead surgeon, Dr. White. She approached them with a medical chart in her hand. "And besides, who told you that she wasn't in her right mind?"All four men crowded around her at once."Doctor, how is she? When will she wake up?"Dr. White didn't answer. Instead, she held out a folded sheet of paper."These are the

Boaz's phone slipped from his hand. The screen hit the floor, leaving a jagged crack across it.Drake shot to his feet, exclaiming, "What do you mean, Arianna's heart stopped? What's the situation now? Did they manage to revive her?"The nurse didn't answer. She simply said, "That is confidential patient information. You have no right to inquire about it."Then, the line went dead.Silence descended on the four of them.Cindy pulled off her oxygen mask. "Ari had surgery?"Evans explained in a low voice. He said, "Heart surgery. It was supposed to be paid for with that 260 thousand dollars."Cindy stared at them as if seeing them in a new, ugly light for the first time. She asked in horror, "So, the reason she couldn't afford her surgery is because of the four of you?"Finley ran a hand through his hair, looking agitated. "We didn't actually spend the money. We were planning to pay her back as soon as we got back.""As soon as we got back?" Cindy echoed, letting out a sharp, in

Just as Boaz arrived at the town by the snow-capped mountains in the Northern Pole, he received a payment demand letter from my lawyer, Gustav Clayton. The summons simply stated that the amount of 265 thousand dollars had to be repaid within 24 hours, or a lawsuit would follow.Finley glanced at it and laughed. "Tsk, look at her, getting bold enough to hire a lawyer just to scare us."Drake didn't take it seriously either. He said, "She's only got about 300 dollars left in her account. How could she possibly afford a lawyer?"Evans, however, kept his eyes fixed on the attachment, his expression growing increasingly grim."There are the IOUs, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and everything. She attached them all. This is the real deal."The group fell silent.Of course, they could afford to pay it back. In fact, the money was still sitting untouched in each of their respective accounts. They hadn't borrowed the money because they were short on cash. They simply knew that
