Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
“Don’t worry, I will make sure you survive.”

Noah’s mentor had once performed a successful heart transplant, giving him the supreme confidence that he could keep me alive.

“Once your sister recovers, my family will accept you, and I will stay by your side.”

Noah and his colleagues began the operation with tense, orderly precision.

After a long while, Noah extracted a heart from my body.

Before he even had a chance to inspect it, he grabbed my heart and rushed into Naomi's operating room.

My chest lay wide open, my body abandoned and alone on the operating table.

The piercing, shrill shriek of the monitor jolted the remaining doctor guarding the room back to reality.

“How did she die? Didn’t they say she has two hearts?” one of Noah’s colleagues asked, completely baffled.

“You actually believed Dr. Sullivan when he said that as a joke?”

“Good riddance. Serves her right for doing so many evil things—not only refusing to save Dr. Sullivan’s wife, but even trying to seduce him,” another colleague replied.

“What do we do now?”

“She’s dead. Just wait for someone to claim the body. If nobody wants it, let the morgue handle it.”

With that, every doctor in the operating room left.

Noah focused entirely on operating on Naomi.

Although he was confident, this was his first time performing a heart transplant on a patient. Fortunately, after several hours, the surgery was successfully completed.

Once it was over, Noah accompanied Naomi back to her private ward.

Only after Naomi was settled did he finally remember me.

Just as Noah was about to head back to the operating room to check on me, he ran into one of the colleagues who had assisted in the surgery out in the hallway.

“Where is my wife?”

The colleague paused, thinking for a moment before answering, “Didn’t she already come back? Don’t worry, someone’s keeping an eye on her post-op. The nurses in the department will look after your wife.”

Noah didn’t catch the strange phrasing. Instead, he figured his colleague was right; with him around, the ward nurses would naturally keep a close eye on things.

Satisfied, Noah returned to his office to resume work.

A day later, Naomi woke up.

Noah stayed right by her bedside.

“Naomi, you’re finally awake.”

Seeing Noah when she opened her eyes, Naomi burst into tears of overwhelming emotion.

Noah stepped forward and pulled her into an embrace. “Don’t worry, the surgery went smoothly. Your heart won’t give you any more trouble from now on.”

Naomi touched her chest, weeping continuously as the realization hit her that the illness which had plagued her for years was finally gone.

Noah gently stroked her back to soothe her, reminding her not to experience such violent emotional swings.

Seeing this, one of the department nurses teased, “Dr. Sullivan is certainly good to his wife.”

Noah froze upon hearing that. Remembering that I was still in another room down the hall, he opened his mouth to clarify, “You’ve got it wrong, she isn’t—”

Right on cue, Naomi clutched her chest, cutting Noah off.

Left with no choice, Noah could only pat her back. “I told you not to cry. All you need to do right now is rest so you can recover.”

Perhaps seeing Naomi like this suddenly jogged his memory. It struck him that he hadn’t checked on me even once since the operation.

“Naomi, get some rest. I’m going to go check on Sophia.”

With that, Noah started to stand up.

However, Naomi suddenly grabbed his hand. “I went behind my parents’ backs to have this surgery, and I’m in the most critical stage of recovery. Without anyone here with me, I’m scared I won’t heal properly.”

Seeing Naomi’s pitiful, vulnerable expression, Noah’s heart softened.

He figured the doctors and nurses would surely look after me out of respect for him anyway, so his worries melted away.

“Alright. I’ll stay and keep you company for a few more days.”

My mother couldn’t listen to another second of it. She strode over to Naomi’s bedside and delivered a ringing slap straight across her face.Naomi had never expected our mother to strike her.“You hit me?! For her?!” Naomi shrieked, her voice turning foul and vile. “What’s so great about her anyway?! She’s nothing but a lowborn bastard—a piece of trash raised by nobody!”Hearing her foul insults, Noah snapped. He lunged forward, his hands locking in a death grip around Naomi’s throat.“Who do you think you are?!“Did you really think I loved you? That I made her donate her heart to you out of love for you?“If it weren’t for Sophia’s heart, do you think I would have ever let you anywhere near me?!”From the very first moment Noah had met Naomi, an odd, unexplainable feeling had tugged at him. He hadn’t known how to describe it back then—only that whenever he looked at Naomi, he felt an overwhelming, instinctive urge to submit and yield. In the past, Noah had assumed he must hav

He had questions that required answers from Naomi.Ever since Naomi woke up, she had noticed the heavy, burdened expressions weighing on my parents. Instead of crowding around her bed the moment her eyes opened as they usually would, they just sat off to the side, sighing in heavy silence.Looking over at Victoria, she too sat in complete, deadened silence.Naomi wondered, “Did Sophia suddenly show up and say something to them?”“No, that doesn’t make sense,” she thought. If I had shown up, my parents would have grabbed me by the hair and forced me to apologize to her on my knees—especially after I had disappeared for so long without bothering to visit her.Besides, George and Scarlett were still hovering outside in the corridor; they were never going to leave without getting their hands on some money.Just as Naomi was stewing in confusion, Noah walked through the door.At a single glance, Naomi spotted my phone clutched in Noah’s hand, and her mind immediately spun to life wit

Disregarding all basic decorum, Noah grabbed his colleague tightly by the collar.“Did you handle the discharge for the patient in room 8?!”Hearing that it was about me, the doctor instantly recalled the vicious rumors he had heard from Naomi. A look of visible disgust swept across his face before he spoke.“What’s the big deal? She passed away, so of course her discharge paperwork had to be processed.”Noah stared at his colleague’s face, struck by total shock. The colleague continued, completely unaware of the horror unfolding in Noah’s mind. “Didn’t you perform the operation yourself? The second you stepped off that operating table, her heart stopped beating.”Noah’s grip slackened, letting go of his colleague’s collar as he shook his head frantically.“No... You’re lying to me. It’s not like that!”Thinking Noah was simply burdened by a standard bout of surgical guilt, the colleague tried to offer a word of comfort. “Don’t beat yourself up over it. Your wife was almost kil

Although my parents were deeply anxious about Naomi, there were far more critical answers they needed to get to the bottom of right now.George and Scarlett were frantically churning their brains, trying to figure out how to lie their way out of this. Just as the atmosphere reached a boiling point, Victoria suddenly dropped to her knees right in front of my parents.“Vincent, Eleanor... I am so sorry! It’s all my fault!”Events were unfolding so fast that even Noah didn’t have time to react. He stepped forward to pull his mother up, but Victoria began spilling the truth of the past through her tears.Noah listened in mounting horror as his mother recounted how weak his heart had been when he was a young boy. His family had searched high and low, exhausting every avenue to find a matching heart for a transplant—until, by chance, they stumbled upon me.They had paid George and Scarlett an astronomical sum for my heart. They had assumed that after the operation, our paths would neve

“My wife has already been discharged. She was previously in room 8.”Upon hearing this, one of the accompanying doctors lost his grip, and his clipboard crashed to the floor with a loud clang. The department director shot the doctor an extremely displeased glare, leaving the frantic physician with no choice but to hurry and scramble for his dropped board.Just as the atmosphere turned awkwardly tense, someone pushed the door open and stepped inside. It was my parents, along with Scarlett and George.Seeing a crowd of doctors gathered inside, they assumed the team was there to evaluate Naomi’s condition. My parents immediately stepped forward.“Doctor, how is our daughter doing right now?”Scarlett was right at their heels. She had actually come today intending to demand money from me. After squatting near my apartment for days without catching a single glimpse of me, she had been left with no choice but to contact my parents. Upon learning that Naomi had undergone surgery, she

Dr. Vaughn hadn’t expected Noah to react this way.“A heart transplant, of course. You had it done when you were a child.”The room fell into a heavy silence for a few seconds before someone burst inside.“Dr. Sullivan! Quick, come take a look—the family members of room 32 are getting into a fight!”Hearing “Room 32,” Noah immediately pictured Naomi. He bolted straight for the ward without a second thought. The moment he stepped into the room, he heard someone shouting at the top of their lungs: “You still dare to deny it?! My niece donated her heart to your son!”Noah rushed forward and pulled the two people apart. When Noah’s mother, Victoria Sullivan, caught sight of him, her eyes welled up with aggrieved tears. The other woman, upon recognizing Noah, began screaming at him again. “It was you! Sophia’s heart is inside you!”Noah stared at her in utter disbelief as my previous words suddenly echoed in his mind.“What is going on here?”Vincent and Eleanor had just walked i
