Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Naomi watched Noah sit back down before slowly closing her eyes, a faint, contented smile gracing her lips.

Meanwhile, inside the hospital morgue, an attendant stared down at my body with a troubled frown. “It’s been two days and no one’s come to claim her. What are we supposed to do?”

Another attendant was busy packing up his gear. “What are you staring at? Finish up quickly so we can get off work.”

Together, the two men heaved my body into a body bag.

“Looking at the state she’s in... dying such a gruesome death, she probably wasn’t a good person anyway.”

“Good person, bad person—once they turn to ash, it’s all the same.”

“True. Still a shame, though. She was so young.”

Another two days passed.

Only when Noah saw that Naomi had mostly recovered did he finally remember to come looking for me.

He walked over to my recovery room, only to find it completely empty. A nurse was in the middle of changing the bedding.

“Where is the patient in this bed?”

The nurse looked up, recognizing him. “She checked out.”

Noah’s brow furrowed in immediate irritation. She just had major surgery. Instead of resting in the hospital, where on earth did she run off to?

He pulled out his phone and dialed my number, but the call refused to connect.

“Fine. Have it your way,” Noah muttered, his anger flaring. “Feel free to die out there for all I care—just don’t come begging to me.”

He stormed back into Naomi’s room.

Noticing his foul mood, Naomi spoke up gently. “Is Sophia really angry? Is she refusing to forgive you? It’s all my fault. Let me go talk to her and explain everything right away—I don’t want the two of you having a misunderstanding because of me.”

As Naomi made a move to get out of bed, Noah immediately held her back. “Why are you bothering with her? Your only priority right now is to recover properly. That way, Mom and Dad will be overjoyed when they hear the good news on the day you’re discharged.”

He scoffed. “As for Sophia, she’s not going to die. She’s already been discharged.”

Recalling how I had frantically begged him right before the surgery, a lingering bitterness gnawed at Noah’s chest. He simply couldn’t comprehend it: we were sisters, so why had I been so willing to watch Naomi die without lifting a finger?

Comparing that to how Naomi was constantly thinking of my well-being, he found me utterly lacking in comparison.

Since I wanted to play tough and insisted on leaving the hospital, he decided to let me stew in my own anger for a while. It wouldn’t be too late to fetch me when Naomi was officially discharged.

Inside the doctors’ office, his colleagues were chatting and laughing among themselves. But the moment Noah stepped through the door, everyone instantly fell silent.

Noah sensed the weird shift in energy. “What were you all talking about just now?”

No one answered.

After a long pause, one colleague stepped forward and put a friendly hand on Noah’s shoulder. “What else could we be talking about? Your deep, devoted love for your wife, of course.”

Noah’s mind flashed to how I had been forced to surrender one of my hearts. In a twisted way, he took that as proof that I truly loved him deeply. Though forced into it, I had ultimately helped him and saved a human life.

At that thought, he found it in his heart to forgive my sudden disappearance—though he was still furious that I was ignoring his calls.

Noticing the dark cloud on his face, his colleague added, “Is your wife in a bad mood?”

Noah stayed quiet.

“It’s completely normal for her to be upset right after a major operation,” his colleague advised. “Be a little more understanding. Do something nice to cheer her up.”

Listening to his colleague’s advice, the tension in Noah’s brow gradually smoothed out. He remembered how much I loved the small pastries from the bakery near our complex, and he decided to head home right after his shift.

Carrying a box of little pastries, Noah unlocked the door and stepped into our apartment.

“Honey? I bought those pastries you like.”

Silence greeted him.

Just as he set the pastry box down on the entryway table, his eyes landed on a document resting right on the center table—the divorce papers I had left behind a week ago.

The moment I first learned he was going to force me to donate my heart, I had already made up my mind to divorce him.

Noah stared at the document, his eyes widening in complete disbelief.

My mother couldn’t listen to another second of it. She strode over to Naomi’s bedside and delivered a ringing slap straight across her face.Naomi had never expected our mother to strike her.“You hit me?! For her?!” Naomi shrieked, her voice turning foul and vile. “What’s so great about her anyway?! She’s nothing but a lowborn bastard—a piece of trash raised by nobody!”Hearing her foul insults, Noah snapped. He lunged forward, his hands locking in a death grip around Naomi’s throat.“Who do you think you are?!“Did you really think I loved you? That I made her donate her heart to you out of love for you?“If it weren’t for Sophia’s heart, do you think I would have ever let you anywhere near me?!”From the very first moment Noah had met Naomi, an odd, unexplainable feeling had tugged at him. He hadn’t known how to describe it back then—only that whenever he looked at Naomi, he felt an overwhelming, instinctive urge to submit and yield. In the past, Noah had assumed he must hav

He had questions that required answers from Naomi.Ever since Naomi woke up, she had noticed the heavy, burdened expressions weighing on my parents. Instead of crowding around her bed the moment her eyes opened as they usually would, they just sat off to the side, sighing in heavy silence.Looking over at Victoria, she too sat in complete, deadened silence.Naomi wondered, “Did Sophia suddenly show up and say something to them?”“No, that doesn’t make sense,” she thought. If I had shown up, my parents would have grabbed me by the hair and forced me to apologize to her on my knees—especially after I had disappeared for so long without bothering to visit her.Besides, George and Scarlett were still hovering outside in the corridor; they were never going to leave without getting their hands on some money.Just as Naomi was stewing in confusion, Noah walked through the door.At a single glance, Naomi spotted my phone clutched in Noah’s hand, and her mind immediately spun to life wit

Disregarding all basic decorum, Noah grabbed his colleague tightly by the collar.“Did you handle the discharge for the patient in room 8?!”Hearing that it was about me, the doctor instantly recalled the vicious rumors he had heard from Naomi. A look of visible disgust swept across his face before he spoke.“What’s the big deal? She passed away, so of course her discharge paperwork had to be processed.”Noah stared at his colleague’s face, struck by total shock. The colleague continued, completely unaware of the horror unfolding in Noah’s mind. “Didn’t you perform the operation yourself? The second you stepped off that operating table, her heart stopped beating.”Noah’s grip slackened, letting go of his colleague’s collar as he shook his head frantically.“No... You’re lying to me. It’s not like that!”Thinking Noah was simply burdened by a standard bout of surgical guilt, the colleague tried to offer a word of comfort. “Don’t beat yourself up over it. Your wife was almost kil

Although my parents were deeply anxious about Naomi, there were far more critical answers they needed to get to the bottom of right now.George and Scarlett were frantically churning their brains, trying to figure out how to lie their way out of this. Just as the atmosphere reached a boiling point, Victoria suddenly dropped to her knees right in front of my parents.“Vincent, Eleanor... I am so sorry! It’s all my fault!”Events were unfolding so fast that even Noah didn’t have time to react. He stepped forward to pull his mother up, but Victoria began spilling the truth of the past through her tears.Noah listened in mounting horror as his mother recounted how weak his heart had been when he was a young boy. His family had searched high and low, exhausting every avenue to find a matching heart for a transplant—until, by chance, they stumbled upon me.They had paid George and Scarlett an astronomical sum for my heart. They had assumed that after the operation, our paths would neve

“My wife has already been discharged. She was previously in room 8.”Upon hearing this, one of the accompanying doctors lost his grip, and his clipboard crashed to the floor with a loud clang. The department director shot the doctor an extremely displeased glare, leaving the frantic physician with no choice but to hurry and scramble for his dropped board.Just as the atmosphere turned awkwardly tense, someone pushed the door open and stepped inside. It was my parents, along with Scarlett and George.Seeing a crowd of doctors gathered inside, they assumed the team was there to evaluate Naomi’s condition. My parents immediately stepped forward.“Doctor, how is our daughter doing right now?”Scarlett was right at their heels. She had actually come today intending to demand money from me. After squatting near my apartment for days without catching a single glimpse of me, she had been left with no choice but to contact my parents. Upon learning that Naomi had undergone surgery, she

Dr. Vaughn hadn’t expected Noah to react this way.“A heart transplant, of course. You had it done when you were a child.”The room fell into a heavy silence for a few seconds before someone burst inside.“Dr. Sullivan! Quick, come take a look—the family members of room 32 are getting into a fight!”Hearing “Room 32,” Noah immediately pictured Naomi. He bolted straight for the ward without a second thought. The moment he stepped into the room, he heard someone shouting at the top of their lungs: “You still dare to deny it?! My niece donated her heart to your son!”Noah rushed forward and pulled the two people apart. When Noah’s mother, Victoria Sullivan, caught sight of him, her eyes welled up with aggrieved tears. The other woman, upon recognizing Noah, began screaming at him again. “It was you! Sophia’s heart is inside you!”Noah stared at her in utter disbelief as my previous words suddenly echoed in his mind.“What is going on here?”Vincent and Eleanor had just walked i
