Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Beet
My mother pulled me inside the house and warned me in a low voice, “In Valtherra, people have always believed in omens and signs. If anyone finds out you gave birth to two beasts, they’ll call you a witch and burn you for it. Elena, go to the palace and be a queen. Leave the beasts here. I’ll take care of them.”

If I had known back then that he was the king of Valtherra, I never would have been reckless enough to get involved with him.

At this point, a royal decree could not be defied. Whether I wanted to or not, I had to go.

I said goodbye to the two leopard cubs as tears streamed down my face, then set off for the palace with the guards.

After half a month of travel, we finally arrived.

A maid led me to a chamber and told me to wait. The king would arrive shortly.

The room had painted glass windows, marble floors, and gleaming gold ornaments. Yet I was not in the mood to admire any of it.

The longer I was away, the more I missed the cubs. I kept wondering if they were alright.

Maybe I missed them too much, because I started seeing things.

I thought I saw two leopards vault over the high palace walls and land right in front of me.

Then, they spoke.

“Mama, we finally found you.”

“Mama, why did you leave us behind?”

The shock hit me so hard that I stumbled and fell to the floor. Staring at them, I asked in a trembling voice, “Are you monsters?”

When I was little, I had heard stories that some monsters would look for a pregnant woman and be born through her womb. That was how they turned into humans.

Judging by how they looked, something must have gone wrong during the process. That was why they came out of me still in leopard form.

The cubs came closer and nuzzled against my skirt.

“We’re not monsters. We’re your children.”

“Mama, I’m so hungry. We followed your scent the whole way. We kept running without stopping. I’m so tired.”

Then, he collapsed right beside me.

The journey from my village to the palace was hundreds of miles. They were not even a month old, yet they had run all day and night to find me.

My heart ached for them. I scooped them both into my arms and called for a maid to bring fresh goat’s milk so I could feed them.

After the two little ones had eaten and drunk their fill, they curled up in my lap and fell fast asleep.

I stroked their fur absently, trying to figure out what to do next.

If I told the king that these two were our children, he would probably have me executed on the spot.

Not everyone was as open-minded as I was.

Besides, he was the King of Valtherra. Even if he was willing to accept two animals as his sons, the court would not. The people would not either.

While I was still racking my brain, a guard announced from outside the door that the king had arrived.

I quickly stuffed the cubs into the bed, straightened my dress, and went out to greet him.

“Elena Foster, Your Majesty.”

Julian Valen stood before me in black-and-gold royal robes with a golden crown securing his hair. He carried himself with an authority that commanded respect without him saying a word. Paired with that handsome face of his, he was even more captivating than before.

Back then, it was that face that had done me in. I had let myself be swayed by it, ignored my mother’s warnings, and insisted on bringing him home to save him.

Julian reached out and helped me to my feet. A teasing smile crossed his lips.

“These formalities don’t suit you.”

I kept my head down and said quietly, “Back then, I didn’t know you were the king. I was disrespectful.”

Julian took my hand and held it tight.

“Whether I’m king or not, I’m still your husband. I preferred you the way you used to be—lively, unrestrained.”

Even if he preferred it, I did not dare act that way anymore. The wrath of a king would cost lives. That was no joke.

Julian looked down at my stomach. There was something like grief in his eyes.

“I heard about the child. It was my fault. If I had brought you here sooner, maybe that wouldn’t have happened.”

As soon as he said that, little cries came from the bed.

To prove his words were true, the former king brought out a set of ancient scrolls that had been passed down to every ruler of the dynasty.“Long ago, our ancestors left a prophecy. The day the blood of beasts vanished completely from our line would be the day Valtherra fell. When I was on the throne, I married fertile women from across the land, all in the hope of conceiving a child who carried the old blood. But of all my children, only Julian survived to adulthood. And he showed no trace of the blood at all. I thought it meant our fate had run its course. I didn’t want Julian to be burdened by this the way I was, so I never told him any of this.”Then, he looked at my children. His eyes shone with emotion and hope.“But I never imagined that he would father these children with awakened ancient blood. With them, Valtherra will flourish for centuries to come.”After the former king’s explanation, the ministers finally seemed to understand.“So, beast-blood truly exists. I always

I had always thought they were both boys. It turned out that I had one boy and one girl.Stunned, I crouched down to look at them.“Y-You turned human? Alright, you two, if you can do that, then use whatever power you have to get your grandmother and me out of here. If we stay any longer, we’re all going to die.”The children clung to my legs.“Mama, we don’t have any powers.”“Mama, we’re just your children.”I let out a quiet sigh. After causing such a scene by talking, turning into humans, and making everyone think we were monsters, it turned out that they were helpless little creatures who did not have any power.Just then, a few of the elder ministers pointed at the little boy and said, “Look, he looks exactly like His Majesty did when he was a child.”“You’re right. He really does resemble the young king.”“Could he actually be the king’s son?”As the tide of opinion began to turn, Lyra pointed at them and snapped, “Have you all lost your minds? They’re monsters. Of co

I shook my head. “Mother, he’s a king. He has power, a kingdom, and countless women. He’ll never be the man who could just settle down with just me. I’d rather be free out there than wither away inside these walls.”My mother looked at me and nodded.“Alright. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”I leaned into her arms.“I’m glad you’re here with me.” The seven days were up. Seeing that I had made up my mind with no intention of changing it, Julian finally had no choice but to let me go.He walked me to the palace gates. His gaze lingered on me.“Elena, if you ever change your mind, the gates of my palace will always be open to you.”I bowed in thanks and turned to leave with my mother and the cubs.Suddenly, a group of soldiers rushed out and surrounded us.Lyra, along with several high-ranking officials, rode up on horseback and blocked our path.Julian turned to them in fury.“What is the meaning of this? You mobilized troops without my command. Are you trying to reb

I carried the two cubs in my arms and followed the guards to the royal study. The moment I stepped inside, I saw my mother kneeling on the floor. As soon as she saw me, she started scolding me. She said, “What trouble did you cause in the palace? Being dragged here on a fast horse at my age almost…”Her voice trailed off. Her eyes were fixed on the two leopard cubs in my arms.“Why are they with you? The day after you left for the palace, they vanished. I thought they had run off on their own. I searched for them for days. I never imagined they had come all the way to you…”Suddenly, something seemed to click. Her voice began to tremble. “Don’t tell me they are the reason His Majesty brought me here.”I sighed softly and nodded.Julian sat on his throne. His presence commanded respect and fear as he looked at my mother and asked, “Mrs. Foster, where did those two creatures in Elena’s arms really come from? Tell me the truth.”My mother knelt there and recounted everything that

“Elena, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”I tightened my hold on the cubs and instinctively took a step back.“If I told you they’re your children, would you believe me?”Lyra immediately stepped forward and pointed at me as she yelled, “Elena, you shameless wretch! Don’t you dare drag Julian into your lies. Julian is the king. How could he possibly be the father of two beasts? Those creatures are clearly monsters born of your dark magic. Julian, for the sake of Valtherra, you must kill her and those creatures at once!”I could feel the malice pouring off Lyra. The leopards in my arms bared their teeth and snarled at her. “Witch! If you hurt our mother, we’ll bite you!”I immediately covered their mouths.“You can’t speak in front of others.”Lyra flinched and pulled her hand back. “Julian, you heard them! Those monsters can speak. Kill them now, before they bring disaster to Valtherra.” Julian drew his sword and pointed it at the cubs.“Elena, I’m sure these cr

Julian looked toward the bed with confusion.“What was that sound?”My voice came out stiff as I explained, “Th-They’re just cats. I got two along the way to keep me company.”He stepped closer to the bed.“I remember you used to hate cats. What kind of cats managed to win you over? Let me see.”I quickly stepped in front of him.“No!” Julian looked at me with a frown. “Why not? Unless those aren’t cats at all?”“They are! They are cats. It’s just that they’re not used to strangers. I’m afraid they might hurt you.”Julian chuckled and pulled me into his arms.“It’s fine. I’ve sustained worse wounds than anything two little cats could manage.”He reached for the covers.I was just about to drop to my knees and confess everything.Suddenly, a maid rushed in.“Your Majesty, Miss Lyra has fainted. She’s been calling your name.”At that, Julian withdrew his hand and hurriedly said, “I’ll check on Lyra first. I’ll come back to you later.”As I watched him leave, I let out a
