Chapter 1

Xavier's POV

Waverly Gardner, my wife, made no attempt to chase after me once I left our home.

I could still hear her friends behind me, cheering and teasing.

"Xavier seems to have raised his game this year!"

"You shouldn't concede so soon, Waverly!"

Waverly chuckled softly. "He can't stand being without me. He'll definitely come crawling back in three days!"

That evening, Waverly started another betting pool in the group chat. She wagered 4,500 dollars, betting that I'd give in within 72 hours.

She even registered Tobias Lawson's, her best friend's, fingerprint to the smart lock and handed him the keys to the house, which signified that he belonged here, hoping to make me give in first.

Tobias posted a photo of the keys and his breakfast on his social media, with my home slippers on his feet in the shot. He included the caption, stating, "Stand-In Husband for a Week, Day 1."

Their friends all piled on, cheering and teasing.

"You should try 'conquering' the master bedroom tonight, Tobias!"

"Tobias should be allowed to drive Xavier's car for the next couple of days, right? He is Waverly's stand-in husband, after all."

Waverly didn't put a stop to it. She even replied, "You can grab the car key on the second shelf in the entryway."

I was sorting out my luggage in the small house Mom and Dad had left me when I saw the post. It had been unoccupied for years. Dust covered the windowsills, and the faucets were slightly rusty, but at least no one here treated my place like part of a game.

In the first year, after Tobias helped himself to my custom-made suit, I lost my temper in front of everyone. Waverly ran after me and stopped me, spending a long time explaining herself. She said she just wanted to know if I cared enough to get jealous. She even promised, "There won't be a next time, Xavier."

Tobias was going through my custom-made suits in the walk-in closet, trying them on one after another.

He even found my watches and cufflinks, then started a live stream so his friends could pick the best-suited outfit for him—something befitting Waverly's husband. He fastened the cufflinks while facing the camera, then adjusted his collar. "How does this one look?"

Waverly was sitting nearby. She looked up and said, "You look better in these clothes than Xavier."

Everyone on the live stream burst into laughter.

Then, someone suddenly asked why I hadn't made an appearance.

Tobias leaned back on the couch and smiled helplessly. "Xavier gets butt-hurt way too easily over a mere game. I was only doing Waverly a favor, but Xavier made a big deal out of it and moved out of the house. Then again, we all know he'll come back sooner or later."

Waverly chimed in. "He'll come back once he's done throwing a fit."

She then sent me a message. "You know very well that relationships need a bit of excitement every now and then, so stop getting upset over a harmless joke, Xavier. If you're going to keep playing the running-away-from-home card, you might as well come take the rest of your belongings."

I realized the smart lock no longer recognized my fingerprint when I returned to take the rest of my belongings. Tobias ended up opening the door for me. He was wearing my watch and walking around in my home slippers.

I noticed that the bed in the master bedroom had been swapped out with the light blue sheets he preferred. I found that all my toiletries had been dumped into a cardboard box.

I noticed that the wedding photo on the wall in the master bedroom had been taken down and propped against the corner of the wall, with the cardboard box covering half of my face and Waverly's in the wedding photo.

Waverly pushed the cardboard box toward me. "You only get to play this whole 'play hard to get' act once, Xavier."

Tobias leaned against the doorframe of the master bedroom and looked at me. "Do you want me to move into the guest room, Waverly?"

He had asked the question, but he didn't make a move to leave.

Waverly simply replied, "You don't have to do that. You, as the stand-in husband, should naturally sleep in the master bedroom."

Having said that, Waverly turned to look at me, with the familiar amusement in her eyes. She seemed to be waiting for me to blow up and throw Tobias out of the house or pressure her to choose between him and me in front of everyone.

Yet, contrary to her expectations, I merely picked up the cardboard box and asked, "Is that everything?"

Waverly's smile faltered for the very first time. She stared at me for a few seconds, then said coldly, "You're rather convincing this time, Xavier. I'll see how long you can keep it up."

I offered no response. I just turned around and closed the door behind me.

It was two years later, and my team and I started our own studio. We didn't roll out a red carpet or hold any big ceremony on opening day; instead, my colleagues bought a cake and celebrated with me in the conference room. They even wrote words on top of the cake. "Welcome back to your own life, Xavier."I looked at it for a long time before smiling and blowing out the candles.Over the years, Waverly occasionally sent me things through mutual acquaintances. The first year, it was that startup commemorative album with all my missing photos restored. The second year, it was the design sketches I had left in our marital home. This year, she sent a gift with a single card. "Happy Wedding Anniversary, Xavier."She crossed out the greeting on the card and wrote a correction below it. "I'm sorry. I forgot that we aren't married anymore."I slipped the card back into the envelope and had it returned exactly as it came, along with the gift.I later heard from our mutual acquaintances

It wasn't long after Waverly released her public statement that a video from the anniversary banquet was uploaded online. There were some who noticed that Tobias was wearing the family signet ring, reserved for someone married to the Gardner family, and appearing on stage as Waverly's husband. Then, others started pulling up records of their games over the past three years. They put those bets, secretly recorded videos, and jeering comments on public display one by one.It wasn't long before public opinion quickly got out of hand. Some people blamed Tobias for coming between a married couple, while others questioned Waverly's decision to use my suffering to prove that I loved her.Waverly's friends, who had participated in the betting, deleted their messages one after another. Some even reached out to me privately, asking if I'd clear the air for them and say it was just good-natured ribbing among close friends with no bad intentions behind it.I didn't reply to any of them. Those

Xavier's POVWaverly waited outside my workplace for three hours, and by the time I clocked out, the night wind had chilled her so badly that her face had gone pale. She hurried over the moment she spotted me. "Can we talk, Xavier?"I stated flatly, "I'm off the clock. I'm also certain that I have nothing to discuss with you, Ms. Gardner." That single "Ms. Gardner" instantly stopped her in her tracks, as I had never addressed her that way throughout the past seven years. She blocked my path and handed me a stack of documents. She had given me the newly revised booklet documenting the company's early days, with my name restored as a co-founder. She had also included an equity compensation offer and a rehire agreement. "We need you at the company, Xavier…"She paused, then added under her breath, "I need you, too."I made no move to take it. "If the company is short on management, you can hire someone new. And as for your own needs, you'll have to address those yourself."It was

Third-Person's POVTobias had only sprained his ankle. By the time Waverly arrived at the hospital, he'd already had X-rays, and the doctor said there was no broken bone and that he would be fine after a few days of rest.He grabbed Waverly's hand, his eyes brimming with tears. "Did you put off the divorce with Xavier because of me, Waverly?"Waverly remained silent for quite some time before placing the divorce certificate before Tobias.Tobias was stunned, barely able to conceal the faint glimmer of hope brimming in his eyes. "Y-You're truly free now. During those seven days, was there ever a single moment you truly saw me as your husband, Waverly?"Waverly remained silent. She suddenly remembered that, in those 30 days, Xavier had neither cried nor backed down from his decision. She finally realized that Xavier had no intention of returning to her side. She left Tobias in the care of a nurse and returned home alone. She couldn't help but find the surroundings unnervingly quiet

It was 9:00 am the following day, and Waverly arrived at the courthouse on time. She wore the black coat I had bought her and was still holding the wedding ring I had returned to her. She looked calm when she spotted me. "Did you sleep well last night, Xavier?"She sounded completely casual, as though we had just had a minor spat.I ignored her question and took a queue ticket.Waverly looked at me and remained silent when the clerk asked whether both parties were filing for the divorce willingly. She finally broke the silence by chuckling softly when the clerk asked a second time. "Yes, I'm doing this willingly."She maintained her unwavering confidence as she signed the divorce application form. "You've got a 30-day cooling-off period. I'm giving you 30 days to think this through, Xavier. If you don't show up then, this game will be officially over."I folded my stamped copy of the filing and put it in my bag. "I'll definitely be there when the time comes."During those 30 days

Those in the living room instantly fell silent the moment I signed the divorce agreement. The countdown froze at one, and the person recording the whole scene was so stunned that they forgot to put their phone down, leaving the camera pointed straight at my face.Just like the last three years, they were all waiting to record me breaking down and crying, just to show everyone how madly in love I was with Waverly. Yet, at this moment, I simply capped the pen and pushed the divorce agreement toward Waverly.Waverly's smile gradually faltered. She looked down and flipped to the last page of the divorce agreement. She confirmed that the signature at the bottom was truly mine, her expression instantly hardening. "Do you have any idea what you just signed, Xavier?""Yes, I do.""It's completely different from those fake divorce agreements we used to tease you with—the division of assets, property ownership, and lawyer's attestation are all legitimate."I nodded and said, "That's why I s
