Chapter 3

مؤلف: Sixth Hour
The lights next door were bright, and the sound of their laughter and chatter was grating on my ears.

They were gathered around a table, raising their glasses to celebrate finally having the whole family back together.

I clutched my thin jacket tightly around me, biting my lip.

I thought of the version of myself I had seen in the water. She was frail and pale. The cancer had taken her hair, along with her will to live.

There was no light left in her eyes, and only despair and numbness were in them. She was barely any different from a corpse.

In the water, I couldn't help but pull her into my arms. And as I held her, I clearly felt all the painful memories she carried.

Those memories, set against the warm, harmonious scene next door, were even more suffocating than the lake water that had consumed me.

I was their daughter too. And yet, they had been the ones to send me straight to my death.

Right then, Mom's voice reached my ears. She sounded incredibly gentle. "We can finally all live together now. You've had it so rough these past few years."

I quickly looked away, not wanting anyone to see the expression on my face.

When I was finally brought home, battered and bruised after being swapped by Suzanne's parents, they had never once said, "You've had it so rough."

Instead, they had been entirely focused on packing treasure after treasure into the luggage of the Suzanne they were supposedly sending away.

And after she left, they hardly ever treated me kindly.

Back then, having only just reunited with them, I assumed they were just busy running a massive corporation and were naturally stoic, emotionally unavailable people. But today, I finally learned that my parents were capable of love.

Their love could probably fill a whole ocean and still have plenty left over. I just happened to have never received any of it.

I was about to leave without looking back when I heard a voice behind me. "Danielle, come here. I want to show you something."

I looked up to see Mom's smiling face. I dragged my feet as I followed her into their home.

Mom stuffed a few photos and files into my hands. "Since Suzanne has gotten such a great fiance, we wanted to make things fair and picked out a few good candidates for you, too. Take your pick.

"You can't say we're playing favorites this time."

According to the memories of my older self that I saw underwater, after I got engaged to the son of the prestigious Klein family, Mom and Dad secretly found an even better match for Suzanne so she wouldn't feel bad.

I found out, threw a fit, and demanded they not give Suzanne anything better than what I had.

So, after carefully searching, Mom and Dad found her a researcher who was incredibly talented.

And, egged on by Mom and Dad, Suzanne stole radioactive ore from the researcher's lab, which ultimately gave me cancer.

I skimmed through the files in my hand.

Even if I combined all the men Mom and Dad picked for me together, they still couldn't hold a candle to that researcher.

Dad hemmed and hawed before speaking up. "Danielle, there's no need to rush your decision. Since Suzanne is marrying into a prestigious family like the Kleins, we obviously have to prepare a very generous wedding gift for her.

"How about we give her all our cash as her wedding gift first? And we can figure your gift out later."

To my parents' surprise, I didn't have a problem with that. "Sure. Give everything you have to Suzanne then."

Suzanne's eyes lit up, the greedy look on her face plain as day.

I couldn't be bothered to watch their little act anymore. I turned around, went back to my room, pulled out my suitcase, and started packing.

As I gathered my belongings, I suddenly realized something. Mom and Dad weren't the only ones who barely had any belongings in this house.

I had hardly anything to call my own. I smiled bitterly. Maybe this was for the best. It made deciding to leave feel less like a loss and more like a clean break.

Martin stared at my outrageous asking price, his teeth clenched as he counted all those zeros. In the end, he agreed, but it was obvious he felt like he was cutting into his own flesh to do it.He thought he'd struck gold, but a few months later, my pharmaceutical company nearly gave him a heart attack.I had used the Klein family's own money to quickly set up a brand-new production line, turning that secret formula into a mass-produced pharmaceutical. In the blink of an eye, what was supposed to be an exclusive, ridiculously expensive drug became a cheap, over-the-counter medicine available on every street corner. And the cheaper version worked just as well as the one he'd paid a fortune for.Even though he was seething inside, he couldn't say a word about it publicly. After all, nothing mattered more to him than keeping his condition a secret. As my production capacity grew, I used the same playbook to bring the other secret formulas to market.Unlike other pharmaceutical com

More importantly, I met someone who actually made my heart flutter. He wasn't some wealthy heir with crazy ambitions or desires. He was just an ordinary guy who made me feel safe enough to let my guard down completely. But to me, he was the only person who truly understood me and respected me.It was right around then that I received another call from my parents. Dad's tired voice came through the phone. That whole ordeal had taken a heavy toll on them, both physically and mentally. They were now a far cry from the confident, spirited people they used to be."Danielle, come home. The company

Life gradually settled into a peaceful rhythm. Free from the shackles of my toxic family, I could finally focus on my career and my own life.Even though the trauma from the past still crept up on me on some nights, the pain was slowly being washed away by the flow of my new reality. One evening, while I was working late, my phone rang. It was Jessica Hayes, my best friend from high school. She had always loved digging up gossip, and she'd been particularly obsessed with my family's "true and fake heiress" drama recently. "Danielle, do you know what happened to Suzanne?"Jessica's voice held a hint of excitement and smug satisfaction. "I haven't really been keeping up with her," I replied."Oh, come on, you know you're curious! Remember when she first married into the Klein family and tried everything to cement her status as Martin's wife?"She even paid for all kinds of promotional articles tying herself to the Klein family. Well, now she's had a breakdown and wants out, but s

A few days later, I was stopped outside my new company. To my surprise, the person blocking my way was Suzanne. She stood there looking completely travel-worn. "After sending me to a hellhole like the Klein residence, you ran off here to enjoy some peace and quiet yourself, huh?"Clutching her handbag, she closed the distance between us. Only then did I notice that her eyes were slightly red. She had clearly been crying for a long time."Did you find out beforehand that the Klein family was awful, and that's why you deliberately dumped that engagement on me?"I slowly raised my head and looked at her. "How can you say I dumped it on you when you were the one who snatched it away from me?"She pointed a finger right at my face, snapping, "Don't play dumb with me. You're that couple's daughter, so you're every bit as shrewd as they are. You'd never willingly do something that puts you at a disadvantage. I know you did this on purpose."I paused for a moment before speaking. "I've n

Suzanne had believed marriage would elevate her social status. It was only now that she saw everything for what it really was—a matter of mutual benefit. The Klein family's dissatisfaction with her was starting to show, and her life was no longer smooth sailing.Between their pressure and the sheer greed and ruthlessness of her biological parents, she was cracking under the weight of it all.And finding out that the adoptive parents who once doted on her now wanted to "swap her out" was the final straw that broke her.Suzanne brought Trudy and Stanley to Mom and Dad's place. "You think you can have your real daughter replace me? That's not happening!"While Suzanne screamed at Mom and Dad, Trudy and Stanley stormed in and started smashing things. "You think you can use our daughter as your little pawn? You've got some nerve!"Mom finally lost her cool and exclaimed, "Your daughter can't even be considered a pawn. She's barely even human. She's just an ungrateful wretch!"Suzanne

After Suzanne hung up on Mom and Dad, the guests around them began whispering, and their faces grew uglier by the second.Unable to hold back, they immediately had someone track Suzanne's phone. When they finally arrived, panting and out of breath, at the reception held at Stanley and Trudy's place, the scene before them practically short-circuited their brains. The spread over there was just as lavish as the one they had painstakingly prepared. Suzanne was dressed to the nines, laughing and chatting happily. Furious and indignant, they stormed over."Suzanne, why are you attending a reception hosted by people like them?"Stanley and Trudy looked deeply offended. "Watch your mouths. Suzanne is our daughter, after all. And after today, she'll officially be returning to her real family. She's going to change her last name tomorrow."Suzanne kept that same matter-of-fact expression. "Mr. and Mrs. Weston, they are my real parents."Mom and Dad clearly couldn't accept that response.
