Chapter 2

作者: Upside-Down Mouse
I wanted to say something but realized that I had nothing left to say.

There was nothing wrong with helping someone who was family. But was it just helping the family when Violet used a sprained ankle as an excuse to call Finnian? Was it still just that if the two of them were arm in arm on a shopping spree through every luxury store in town?

If this had occurred before, I would have smashed everything in the house and screamed at him, demanding to know why he did it.

This time, I just stayed silent.

After all, I would be leaving in seven days.

I did not want to waste my energy on something this pointless.

When Finnian saw that I was quiet, he pulled a sparkly bracelet out of his pocket.

“Alright, today is Ben’s birthday, but you deserve a gift too since you’re his mom. I picked this bracelet out especially for you. Do you like it?”

‘Picked it especially for me?’ I wondered.

Violet had just posted on her social media feed today. This particular bracelet was nothing more than a free gift they received after spending half a million dollars at a luxury store.

When Finnian looked at me, his gaze was sincere and full of love.

I realized I had never really known him at all.

He stared at my wrist and chuckled softly. “It’s really beautiful. It suits you, Diana. Go change your clothes. I booked your and Ben’s favorite restaurant. Let’s go celebrate Ben’s birthday as a family.”

I nodded. After all, Benjamin was my own flesh and blood.

Before I left for good, I wanted a few good memories with Benjamin. That would be my farewell.

When our family of three left the house, Benjamin rushed to claim the front passenger seat. He looked at me pitifully and said, “Mom, can I sit in the front? Pretty please?”

My heart softened. He had not called me “Mom” so sweetly in a long time. After telling him to be careful, I sat in the back seat.

Then, we headed toward the restaurant.

Benjamin looked out the window, but his expression slowly turned dejected.

Finnian noticed this and gently asked him what was wrong.

Benjamin pouted and said with teary eyes, “Is Aunt Violet not coming to my birthday? I made sure Mom didn’t sit here because I wanted Aunt Violet to sit here.”

I felt my heart tense up and my whole body tremble.

Finnian’s expression changed dramatically. He pulled the car over to the side of the road and said sternly, “Ben, apologize to your mother.”

Benjamin realized he had said something wrong. He looked at me reluctantly and said, “I’m sorry, Mom.”

I pursed my lips, but in the end, I could not bring myself to say, “It’s okay.”

Perhaps Benjamin would rather have Violet as his mother.

Finnian restarted the car, and the silence hung over us for the rest of the ride.

In the past, I would have spoken up to break the silence. But this time, I did not say anything.

When we arrived at the restaurant, Benjamin was feeling better. He ran inside ahead of us.

Finnian held me back.

He put his arm around my shoulder and said, “He’s just a kid. He likes Violet, that’s all. Don’t let it get to you.”

I could not hear him very clearly, and I understood that he was making excuses for Benjamin. I pulled his hand down and smiled softly. “I know.”

Finnian had booked the entire restaurant today. When we walked in, the whole restaurant was pitch black, but I could vaguely smell a familiar floral scent.

They were my favorite roses.

Benjamin was afraid of the dark. He froze on the spot and extended his hand toward me, hoping I would hold it.

Just as I took his little hand, the restaurant lights came on. Violet walked out, pushing a cart with a three-tiered cake. She softly sang, “Happy Birthday to you!”

“You liked me too, didn’t you?” The more Violet spoke, the more agitated she became. Her grip on the children gradually loosened.I saw my chance. I moved quickly and snatched Margot back.Violet was momentarily stunned. Before she could react, Finnian had pulled Benjamin into his arms. Both children were scared senseless.Violet screamed at Finnian to marry her. But Finnian slapped her hard across the face and told someone to take her to the police station.Margot cried herself hoarse. I held her in my arms and gently comforted her. Benjamin trembled as he watched. He felt deeply wronged.“Mom, why didn’t you save me? Why did you say you only had a daughter?”Finnian looked heartbroken. “Diana, you almost died giving birth to Ben. How could you be so heartless to him now?”I freed one hand to pat Benjamin on the head. I softly apologized to him. “I’m sorry. But I knew that everyone here would do anything to save you, but Margot has no one but me.”I looked at Finnian and sa

When he heard my harsh words, Finnian began to cry uncontrollably. He finally realized that no matter what he said or did, I would not change my mind. So, he tried hard to muster a smile and pleaded softly, “Diana, I know you resent me. But Ben is your son. You carried him for nine months and gave birth to him. Tomorrow is his birthday. Can you stay and celebrate his birthday with him before you leave?”In the end, I agreed.Benjamin was very excited the whole way. His eyes kept darting to me.“Mom, last time on my birthday, you were sad. Can you be happier today?”“Why was I sad?”Benjamin froze. His face slowly turned pale. He refused to tell me.Seeing his reaction, I could roughly guess the reason.Finnian let out a laugh to ease the awkward atmosphere. “That’s all in the past! There’s no need to bring it up.“Diana, we’re really happy that you’re willing to celebrate Ben’s birthday together.“In the past, I was busy with work and barely had any time for you and Ben. It

Finnian, who had planted the tree himself, looked up at me. He waved excitedly and said, “Diana, come down and pick some cherries!”I looked away indifferently. I met Margot’s sleepy gaze and said softly, “Sweetie, did all that noise wake you up?”I closed the window tightly, blocking out all sound.Margot shook her head. “Mom, I want cherries.”I paused for a moment. Then, I picked up her clothes and dressed her. “Then, let’s go downstairs and get some.”When we got downstairs, Finnian was packing soil around the cherry tree. His expression was cold. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.“Diana, look! I found this cherry tree at an orchard. It makes the sweetest fruit. Try one and see if you like it.”He picked a few cherries and shoved them into my hand as a peace offering. He also stuffed a few into Margot’s hand.Margot looked at the cherries in my hand and pouted. Then, she threw the cherries at Finnian.“You’re a bad guy! You bullied my mom!“Mom hates cherries! She’

After saying that, Finnian gestured for someone to take Margot out of my arms. He claimed they were taking her downstairs to rest.He and Benjamin kept circling me. They chattered nonstop about my previous life here with them. But I only worried about Margot. Unable to endure it any longer, I interrupted them. “Where’s my daughter? What did you do with her?”Finnian paused for a moment. Then, he began introducing every plant and tree on his property. When he saw the cherry tree stump, his expression turned even more gentle.“Cherries are your favorite. Back then, you’d stay at the cherry orchard for days before coming home. I missed you so much that I planted a cherry tree here at home. That way, you could enjoy picking cherries without having to leave your home.”“Where is my daughter?”I did not hear a thing he said. I only wanted Margot.Finnian looked hurt. He picked up Benjamin, who was crying. “Diana, look at Ben’s eyes. Don’t they look just like yours? He is your real

The system said the world that I abandoned was about to collapse. It hoped I could go back and take a look.I no longer remembered what had happened in the other world. But the system pleaded with me and offered me generous rewards.I nodded and agreed. I only made one request.I wanted to take Margot with me.The system agreed. In the blink of an eye, we arrived in the other world.Margot and I stood in front of the same tree stump I had seen before I left.New branches had grown from the stump.Margot tugged at my clothes. “Mom, where are we?”Just as I was about to shake my head in reply, I heard someone call out my name in disbelief.“Diana?!”I turned and met a pair of eyes filled with tears. Before I could say anything, a little boy rushed over.He roughly shoved Margot aside and desperately grabbed hold of my clothes.“Mom, I knew you weren’t dead! You came back to see me, didn’t you? I missed you so much! I’ll never make you angry again!”The little boy rambled on

After I left my body, the system let me stay in place and watch for a while.Finnian, Benjamin, and Violet, who had been getting along so happily, all frowned when they saw my curled-up body. They seemed confused. They wondered if I was putting on an act to get their attention.Finnian approached me first. He gently nudged my body and asked me why I was lying there. My body temperature had already started to drop. He reached out to check my breath with trembling fingers. Then, he fell to his knees. He pulled my body into his arms and sobbed as he begged, “Honey, what’s wrong with you? Don’t scare me like this, honey!”Benjamin also ran over and shouted, “Mom, look at me! I promise I’ll behave from now on.“Please, look at me!”The two of them wept bitterly, but I found it noisy instead.“Why are these people crying over me? It’s so annoying!”The system chuckled and opened a passage for me to leave. Finally, it said to me, [This was for you to see before you lost your memor
