Chapter 4

作者: Upside-Down Mouse
Back then, the male and female leads of this world had found their happily ever after. They were already committed to each other for life. It was the darkest time in Finnian’s life.

I took an apple-flavored lollipop and handed it to him as I said comfortingly, “Here. You can’t make the hurt go away, but at least your mouth can taste something sweet.”

He ate the lollipop, and just like that, I became a part of his life.

I watched as his attitude toward me changed from cold to affectionate. Eventually, he showed up with a bouquet of roses and got down on one knee.

I should have been happy, but instead, a wave of panic washed over me.

I suddenly opened my eyes and gasped for air.

Just then, my phone rang.

The moment I answered the call, Finnian’s barrage of accusations sounded from the other end. “Diana, Violet got hurt saving Ben. We’re all at the hospital. Where are you?”

“I’m in the restaurant restroom.”

Finnian was stunned. He stammered, “Wait… did no one open the door for you?”

I did not want to answer the pointless question, so I stayed silent.

He did not need me to answer anyway. His voice softened as he said, “I’ll come back and get you right now. Violet got hurt. We really need to thank her properly this time.”

With that, he hung up.

He arrived in less than half an hour.

My lower body had gone numb. Finnian reached out to help me up, but I turned away and dodged him.

He awkwardly pulled his hand back and said in explanation, “Sorry, Diana. I didn’t mean to leave you locked here. But the chandelier fell on Violet. I panicked—”

I coldly interrupted him, “You could have directed any other waiter to let me out.”

Finnian averted my gaze. “How was I supposed to think of that at the moment?”

I stared at him fixedly and laughed.

Finnian was the CEO of a mall. He had always been known for being meticulous in business.

I had lived with him for seven years, so I knew how careful and thorough he was.

For him to make such an excuse meant he was either lying to me or had truly been frantic with worry.

But I did not want to dig any deeper. I asked, “Is Violet hurt very badly?”

Finnian’s expression eased a little. “Not really. It just hit her shoulder.”

I said nothing more and went with him to the hospital.

Before we even reached the hospital room, we heard a scream.

Finnian’s face went pale. He quickly rushed in.

I followed closely behind.

I saw Violet throw herself into Finnian’s arms and cling tightly to his waist. “Finnian, you scared me to death! Is Ben okay?”

Finnian’s hands were trembling a little. He gently patted Violet. “It’s okay. Don’t be scared. Ben is fine, too.”

I stood at the door with an aching feeling in my chest.

All day today, I had felt like a background character hovering on the edge of everyone else’s story. Their happiness was something I could only stand in a corner and watch like a stranger.

Violet saw me but showed no intention of letting go of Finnian.

I forced a smile and thanked her sincerely. “Thank you for saving Ben.”

Even at that moment, she was provoking me. “You’re welcome. After all, I’ve watched Ben grow up, too. He’s no different from my own child.”

Finnian and Benjamin, who were in tears, looked deeply touched. They decided to take Violet home to care for her.

No one asked for my opinion. It did not matter at all.

Finnian and Benjamin carefully helped Violet into the car.

“You liked me too, didn’t you?” The more Violet spoke, the more agitated she became. Her grip on the children gradually loosened.I saw my chance. I moved quickly and snatched Margot back.Violet was momentarily stunned. Before she could react, Finnian had pulled Benjamin into his arms. Both children were scared senseless.Violet screamed at Finnian to marry her. But Finnian slapped her hard across the face and told someone to take her to the police station.Margot cried herself hoarse. I held her in my arms and gently comforted her. Benjamin trembled as he watched. He felt deeply wronged.“Mom, why didn’t you save me? Why did you say you only had a daughter?”Finnian looked heartbroken. “Diana, you almost died giving birth to Ben. How could you be so heartless to him now?”I freed one hand to pat Benjamin on the head. I softly apologized to him. “I’m sorry. But I knew that everyone here would do anything to save you, but Margot has no one but me.”I looked at Finnian and sa

When he heard my harsh words, Finnian began to cry uncontrollably. He finally realized that no matter what he said or did, I would not change my mind. So, he tried hard to muster a smile and pleaded softly, “Diana, I know you resent me. But Ben is your son. You carried him for nine months and gave birth to him. Tomorrow is his birthday. Can you stay and celebrate his birthday with him before you leave?”In the end, I agreed.Benjamin was very excited the whole way. His eyes kept darting to me.“Mom, last time on my birthday, you were sad. Can you be happier today?”“Why was I sad?”Benjamin froze. His face slowly turned pale. He refused to tell me.Seeing his reaction, I could roughly guess the reason.Finnian let out a laugh to ease the awkward atmosphere. “That’s all in the past! There’s no need to bring it up.“Diana, we’re really happy that you’re willing to celebrate Ben’s birthday together.“In the past, I was busy with work and barely had any time for you and Ben. It

Finnian, who had planted the tree himself, looked up at me. He waved excitedly and said, “Diana, come down and pick some cherries!”I looked away indifferently. I met Margot’s sleepy gaze and said softly, “Sweetie, did all that noise wake you up?”I closed the window tightly, blocking out all sound.Margot shook her head. “Mom, I want cherries.”I paused for a moment. Then, I picked up her clothes and dressed her. “Then, let’s go downstairs and get some.”When we got downstairs, Finnian was packing soil around the cherry tree. His expression was cold. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.“Diana, look! I found this cherry tree at an orchard. It makes the sweetest fruit. Try one and see if you like it.”He picked a few cherries and shoved them into my hand as a peace offering. He also stuffed a few into Margot’s hand.Margot looked at the cherries in my hand and pouted. Then, she threw the cherries at Finnian.“You’re a bad guy! You bullied my mom!“Mom hates cherries! She’

After saying that, Finnian gestured for someone to take Margot out of my arms. He claimed they were taking her downstairs to rest.He and Benjamin kept circling me. They chattered nonstop about my previous life here with them. But I only worried about Margot. Unable to endure it any longer, I interrupted them. “Where’s my daughter? What did you do with her?”Finnian paused for a moment. Then, he began introducing every plant and tree on his property. When he saw the cherry tree stump, his expression turned even more gentle.“Cherries are your favorite. Back then, you’d stay at the cherry orchard for days before coming home. I missed you so much that I planted a cherry tree here at home. That way, you could enjoy picking cherries without having to leave your home.”“Where is my daughter?”I did not hear a thing he said. I only wanted Margot.Finnian looked hurt. He picked up Benjamin, who was crying. “Diana, look at Ben’s eyes. Don’t they look just like yours? He is your real

The system said the world that I abandoned was about to collapse. It hoped I could go back and take a look.I no longer remembered what had happened in the other world. But the system pleaded with me and offered me generous rewards.I nodded and agreed. I only made one request.I wanted to take Margot with me.The system agreed. In the blink of an eye, we arrived in the other world.Margot and I stood in front of the same tree stump I had seen before I left.New branches had grown from the stump.Margot tugged at my clothes. “Mom, where are we?”Just as I was about to shake my head in reply, I heard someone call out my name in disbelief.“Diana?!”I turned and met a pair of eyes filled with tears. Before I could say anything, a little boy rushed over.He roughly shoved Margot aside and desperately grabbed hold of my clothes.“Mom, I knew you weren’t dead! You came back to see me, didn’t you? I missed you so much! I’ll never make you angry again!”The little boy rambled on

After I left my body, the system let me stay in place and watch for a while.Finnian, Benjamin, and Violet, who had been getting along so happily, all frowned when they saw my curled-up body. They seemed confused. They wondered if I was putting on an act to get their attention.Finnian approached me first. He gently nudged my body and asked me why I was lying there. My body temperature had already started to drop. He reached out to check my breath with trembling fingers. Then, he fell to his knees. He pulled my body into his arms and sobbed as he begged, “Honey, what’s wrong with you? Don’t scare me like this, honey!”Benjamin also ran over and shouted, “Mom, look at me! I promise I’ll behave from now on.“Please, look at me!”The two of them wept bitterly, but I found it noisy instead.“Why are these people crying over me? It’s so annoying!”The system chuckled and opened a passage for me to leave. Finally, it said to me, [This was for you to see before you lost your memor
