Chapter 1

"The divorce is only temporary. It’s not like I’m leaving you. This is all Tristan wants. Can't you be a little more generous?"

Jasmine Reed frowned at me with her arms crossed.

The system's words still echoed in my ears.

In an instant, I regained much of my composure.

My mission failed, so I had no reason to keep arguing with Jasmine.

I knew how unreasonable Tristan's request was.

Tristan was Jasmine's childhood friend. He dreamed that she was married and woke up in such a panic that he begged her to get a divorce.

But Jasmine and I had been married for three years already.

His tears came a little late. It was ridiculous.

What made it even more ridiculous was that Jasmine came home and brought it up without a second thought.

She really was his loyal little lapdog.

Now, my silence only made Jasmine more impatient.

"It's just a divorce. Do you really have to make such a fuss?"

I no longer thought it was worth making a fuss, either.

Throughout my mission to win her love, she kept up her ambiguous relationship with Tristan.

Tristan even caused a scene when we were about to get married.

I was afraid my mission would fail, so I paid people to keep him away and did everything I could to keep the wedding on track.

The system told me I would succeed if Jasmine's affection for me reached 100 percent within the allotted time.

Now my time was up, and my mission was officially a failure.

I came back to the present.

I nodded.

"All right. I'll agree to the divorce."

Jasmine's eyes lit up, and she immediately took me to the courthouse.

In the car, she fastened my seat belt for me, the picture of a loving, devoted wife.

My friends in this world used to envy me for being with Jasmine.

They all praised her devotion, ambition, and ability to make money.

But only I knew that I paid for everything, from the food she ate to the roof over her head.

After I arrived in this world, I was forced to take over the company that belonged to this body's original owner.

I struggled to keep it going and worked from dawn until late at night on my own. Only this year did I finally have time to rest.

Yet they gave her all the credit, as though I would be nothing without her.

The system told me that a successful mission would earn me a two-hundred-million-dollar reward to take back to my own world.

So, I never cleared up their misunderstanding.

Six years passed in the blink of an eye.

Jasmine never loved me enough to reach 100 percent.

I stared at the divorce certificate in front of me, still a little dazed.

It took so much to get us married, yet ending it was this easy.

At least I could go home in fifteen days. I would never have to exhaust myself trying to please a woman who didn't love me.

Jasmine looked calm and showed no intention of driving me home.

She spoke as soon as she opened the car door.

"Oh, Jensen, Tristan wants to take a vacation soon. I..."

I knew that look. She wanted money to spend on Tristan.

Whenever she looked at me like that, I knew she had used up all the money I gave her.

She acted as though she was entitled to it.

"It's pocket change to you. Surely you wouldn't refuse to give me that much.

"Don't start blaming him again. I found out what he wanted and decided to ask you myself. If you want to yell at someone, yell at me..."

I cut her off coldly.

"Fine. How much?"

Jasmine named an amount without thinking, then froze.

Buying the house went smoothly. We chose a house in a pleasant neighborhood with a small yard.It had plenty of room and sunlight. We picked out furniture and discussed how to decorate. We disagreed now and then, but we always found a solution quickly. The sun shone on moving day.I carried the last small box inside while Vera cheerfully directed the movers as they set up her easel. She had recently fallen in love with oil painting. Her technique was still developing, but she enjoyed every minute of it.I stood in the middle of the living room and looked around the home we created together. Outside, the hydrangeas Vera planted swayed gently in the breeze. There was no shadow of anyone else here. I didn’t have to stay on guard or make myself small to please someone. There was only the comfort of ordinary life and the certainty that we would build our future together.Vera came over and slipped her hand into mine, threading her fingers through my own.“What do you want for dinner?” she a

Naturally, Vera became my assistant at the firm.Getting to know her felt easier than I had expected. She was clever and independent, with a bright, direct way of speaking. She didn’t play games or expect me to guess what she was feeling.I felt at ease with her. We talked about how films were shot, complained about unreasonable clients, and sometimes sat quietly in a little restaurant after working late, each with a plate of pasta.I didn’t have to watch every word or worry about where I stood.I knew she liked me. Her glances and occasional hints weren’t hard to read. But I wasn’t in a hurry. I enjoyed getting to know her and growing closer little by little. For once, I wanted to give something good the time it needed.A few months later, we went hiking outside the city one weekend. The wind was strong at the summit. Vera pulled her coat tighter around herself, her nose pink from the cold. I handed her a thermos. She held it in both hands and looked at the autumn colors covering the

My return to the real world was peaceful. There was no white light, no dizziness. It felt like waking from a long, exhausting dream.I lay on the same hard bed, with the familiar sounds of the city outside. Then my phone lit up. Several bank notifications arrived in quick succession, showing a dizzying string of zeros added to my account. Two hundred million dollars. The money was really there.I stared at the number for a long time. I didn’t feel the wild excitement I expected, only a steady sense that everything was finally settled.I was free.I no longer had to struggle to make a living, watch every word I said around others, or trap myself in a suffocating relationship while begging for scraps of love.I got up, washed, and changed into clean, comfortable clothes.Instead of settling for a cheap microwave meal, I went downstairs. At the brunch café near my building, a place I had wanted to try for ages but could never justify spending money on, I ordered enough to fill the table.

Jasmine had sold the house. She poured everything she had into bringing Tristan down. It belonged to someone else now, and warm light glowed through its windows. She stood across the road in the rain and looked up at the familiar window for a long time. Then she turned and walked toward the cemetery outside the city. The rain grew heavier. Cold water soaked her hair and clothes, but she barely felt it.The cemetery was empty. Rain rustled through the trees. She found the grave of Jensen’s parents. She slowly knelt before the headstone and rested her forehead against it. At last, she broke into sobs.“I’m sorry... I’m sorry...”She repeated the words, but her apology came too late and vanished into the cold rain.“I was wrong... I know I was wrong...“Please come back... Please... I’ll never treat you that way again...”Only the endless rain and silence answered her.She cried until she had no voice left, only broken sobs. After what felt like an eternity, the rain began to ease.Jasmin

Jasmine lifted her head. Her eyes were bloodshot and filled with hatred, directed at Tristan and, even more, at herself. The look made Tristan step back. She gripped the sink and struggled to her feet. Through her tears, she stared at the woman in the mirror and hated what she saw.It was her.She drove Jensen away. When he might have needed her most, she humiliated and betrayed him.And Tristan, the man she once thought would save her, constantly told her Jensen wasn’t good enough and urged her to demand more. He helped drive Jensen away too.She spun around and fixed her eyes on Tristan.“Did you know he was ill?”Tristan frowned.“What are you talking about? You told me he was putting on an act.”Jasmine gave a cold laugh.“And what about you?”She advanced on him, her voice icy.“Why did you always get sick at exactly the right time? Why did you always need me to leave him and take care of you? Tristan, look at me!”Tristan retreated with every step she took, the color draining fro

Jasmine used the wall to pull herself slowly to her feet. She didn’t look at Tristan again as she stumbled toward the stairs.“I’m tired. I want to sleep.”Her voice sounded so worn that it might break at any moment.Tristan watched her unsteady figure and wanted to help, but he couldn’t make himself move.He knew something between them had broke the moment his eyes shifted away from hers. The devoted man he worked so hard to portray could not withstand that one honest reaction.Jasmine went to the bedroom and locked the door. She left the lights off and collapsed onto the large bed.The room still seemed to smell of new furniture and paint. She closed her eyes, but all she could picture was the balcony of their small, cozy apartment, Jensen hanging out the laundry, and the faint scent of detergent in the air.She used to think he was dull. He buried himself in work and never did anything romantic.Only now did she understand how precious the security he gave her was.She grabbed a pil
