Chapter 2

She hadn’t expected me to agree without a fight.

Her tone softened considerably.

“If you’d been this understanding from the start, we wouldn’t have fought so much.”

I took out my phone and transferred the money without hesitation.

Three years together, and all I got in the end was praise for being understanding.

When I first arrived in this world, I knew nothing. I did everything with an open heart.

I loved her. I didn’t want her to see Tristan, and I drove myself half mad trying to stop her.

All it did was bring them closer.

She grew more impatient with me too.

Now we were divorced.

The first thing she wanted to do was see Tristan.

But after she got into the car, she took the trouble to explain herself for once.

“You’re strong enough to manage on your own. Tristan isn’t. He gets scared so easily...”

Tristan’s family died in a car accident a year ago. Since then, he called Jasmine to come stay with him more and more often.

I lost count of the nights she never came home.

Their families were close when they were children, and everyone treated the two of them like siblings.

To Jasmine, Tristan was both the older brother she wanted to protect and the love she kept on a pedestal.

A flicker of concern crossed her face as she spoke.

Even her voice softened when she said his name.

She never spoke about me that way.

At least it would all be over soon.

Of all people, I fell for someone like her in my first relationship.

I could admit now that I gave my heart to the wrong person.

Jasmine went on.

“I’ll be home tonight. Make me something to eat when I get back, and...”

I cut her off and forced a smile.

“Got it. Drive carefully. I’ll make you a late-night snack and wait for you. If you can’t come home, that’s fine too. Stay with him a little longer.”

Jasmine’s grip tightened around the steering wheel.

I thought she would be pleased, but she frowned at me instead.

“What are you up to this time?”

She had it all wrong. I really didn’t plan to do anything.

I didn’t even plan to get angry.

Once, Tristan hurt his finger at home, and she was so worried that she left me stranded on the road to rush to him.

Another time, Tristan took a liking to a stuffed toy I made, so she insisted on giving it to him. I spent three months making it by hand and even injured my fingers, but she didn’t care.

Things like that happened too many times.

I knew better than to get angry now.

But Jasmine didn’t believe me. She gave a cold snort.

“You’d better mean it. If you hadn’t kept getting in my way, Tristan might not have come so close to dying.”

She glared at me as though I had driven him to attempt suicide.

I refused to take the blame for that.

“He stopped taking his medication, and his depression took a turn for the worse late at night. What does that have to do with me? I didn’t take his medication away.”

I even paid for the better antidepressants he took now and his occasional therapy sessions.

I barely took a day off the whole time I lived here.

I rested a little over the holidays, but I still dealt with work documents.

Jasmine loved painting but had no steady income, so I supported her every month.

She spent all that money on Tristan’s trips and treatment, then asked me for more.

Jasmine looked at me with disappointment.

“Tristan got sick because he lost his family. How can you have no sympathy for him? How could you be so heartless?”

I took a deep breath. I couldn’t be bothered to argue anymore.

She had already decided I was unreasonable. Anything I said would sound like an excuse to her.

“I understand. Go spend more time with him. If he needs money for a trip, I’ll give it to you.”

My response left Jasmine with nothing to say.

After a moment, she said, “Just don’t be angry anymore. It’s not like I’m never coming home. Once he gets better, I’ll remarry you.”

“No, thanks,” I thought with a bitter laugh.

I knew Jasmine wouldn’t come home tonight.

The first time she went to see Tristan, I stayed up waiting for her.

I waited until dawn, but she never appeared.

All I got for my trouble was a scolding.

“If you were tired, why didn’t you go to bed? How is that my fault?”

Now I watched her drive away.

I turned and took a cab home.

I was poor in my own world, but at least I didn’t have to endure this emotional torment.

The thought that I could leave in fifteen days made me happy.

As for Jasmine and her dear Tristan, I wished them well. May they stay together forever.

  • I Gave Up on Her, and Now She’s Afraid to Lose Me   Chapter 36

Buying the house went smoothly. We chose a house in a pleasant neighborhood with a small yard.It had plenty of room and sunlight. We picked out furniture and discussed how to decorate. We disagreed now and then, but we always found a solution quickly. The sun shone on moving day.I carried the last small box inside while Vera cheerfully directed the movers as they set up her easel. She had recently fallen in love with oil painting. Her technique was still developing, but she enjoyed every minute of it.I stood in the middle of the living room and looked around the home we created together. Outside, the hydrangeas Vera planted swayed gently in the breeze. There was no shadow of anyone else here. I didn’t have to stay on guard or make myself small to please someone. There was only the comfort of ordinary life and the certainty that we would build our future together.Vera came over and slipped her hand into mine, threading her fingers through my own.“What do you want for dinner?” she a

Naturally, Vera became my assistant at the firm.Getting to know her felt easier than I had expected. She was clever and independent, with a bright, direct way of speaking. She didn’t play games or expect me to guess what she was feeling.I felt at ease with her. We talked about how films were shot, complained about unreasonable clients, and sometimes sat quietly in a little restaurant after working late, each with a plate of pasta.I didn’t have to watch every word or worry about where I stood.I knew she liked me. Her glances and occasional hints weren’t hard to read. But I wasn’t in a hurry. I enjoyed getting to know her and growing closer little by little. For once, I wanted to give something good the time it needed.A few months later, we went hiking outside the city one weekend. The wind was strong at the summit. Vera pulled her coat tighter around herself, her nose pink from the cold. I handed her a thermos. She held it in both hands and looked at the autumn colors covering the

My return to the real world was peaceful. There was no white light, no dizziness. It felt like waking from a long, exhausting dream.I lay on the same hard bed, with the familiar sounds of the city outside. Then my phone lit up. Several bank notifications arrived in quick succession, showing a dizzying string of zeros added to my account. Two hundred million dollars. The money was really there.I stared at the number for a long time. I didn’t feel the wild excitement I expected, only a steady sense that everything was finally settled.I was free.I no longer had to struggle to make a living, watch every word I said around others, or trap myself in a suffocating relationship while begging for scraps of love.I got up, washed, and changed into clean, comfortable clothes.Instead of settling for a cheap microwave meal, I went downstairs. At the brunch café near my building, a place I had wanted to try for ages but could never justify spending money on, I ordered enough to fill the table.

Jasmine had sold the house. She poured everything she had into bringing Tristan down. It belonged to someone else now, and warm light glowed through its windows. She stood across the road in the rain and looked up at the familiar window for a long time. Then she turned and walked toward the cemetery outside the city. The rain grew heavier. Cold water soaked her hair and clothes, but she barely felt it.The cemetery was empty. Rain rustled through the trees. She found the grave of Jensen’s parents. She slowly knelt before the headstone and rested her forehead against it. At last, she broke into sobs.“I’m sorry... I’m sorry...”She repeated the words, but her apology came too late and vanished into the cold rain.“I was wrong... I know I was wrong...“Please come back... Please... I’ll never treat you that way again...”Only the endless rain and silence answered her.She cried until she had no voice left, only broken sobs. After what felt like an eternity, the rain began to ease.Jasmin

Jasmine lifted her head. Her eyes were bloodshot and filled with hatred, directed at Tristan and, even more, at herself. The look made Tristan step back. She gripped the sink and struggled to her feet. Through her tears, she stared at the woman in the mirror and hated what she saw.It was her.She drove Jensen away. When he might have needed her most, she humiliated and betrayed him.And Tristan, the man she once thought would save her, constantly told her Jensen wasn’t good enough and urged her to demand more. He helped drive Jensen away too.She spun around and fixed her eyes on Tristan.“Did you know he was ill?”Tristan frowned.“What are you talking about? You told me he was putting on an act.”Jasmine gave a cold laugh.“And what about you?”She advanced on him, her voice icy.“Why did you always get sick at exactly the right time? Why did you always need me to leave him and take care of you? Tristan, look at me!”Tristan retreated with every step she took, the color draining fro

Jasmine used the wall to pull herself slowly to her feet. She didn’t look at Tristan again as she stumbled toward the stairs.“I’m tired. I want to sleep.”Her voice sounded so worn that it might break at any moment.Tristan watched her unsteady figure and wanted to help, but he couldn’t make himself move.He knew something between them had broke the moment his eyes shifted away from hers. The devoted man he worked so hard to portray could not withstand that one honest reaction.Jasmine went to the bedroom and locked the door. She left the lights off and collapsed onto the large bed.The room still seemed to smell of new furniture and paint. She closed her eyes, but all she could picture was the balcony of their small, cozy apartment, Jensen hanging out the laundry, and the faint scent of detergent in the air.She used to think he was dull. He buried himself in work and never did anything romantic.Only now did she understand how precious the security he gave her was.She grabbed a pil
