Chapter 1

The room still smelled of blood.

I reached out with all the strength I had, trying to grab the hem of Elias's coat.

"Elias, please. I just want to see her. One look is all I'm asking."

He looked at me as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he simply carried our daughter out.

The door that had kept me confined for ten months opened, and I saw Vivian standing outside. She reached out and took my daughter into her arms.

The door quickly shut again, leaving me alone in silence and cut off from every sound outside.

A week later, I was ordered to the great hall. Vivian wanted to see me.

She was the Donna of the Voss family, while I was only an ordinary maid on the Voss estate. Her summons was an order I couldn't refuse.

Every step pulled at the wound in my abdomen until my face was slick with sweat. Still, I had no choice but to make my way to the great hall one step at a time.

Vivian sat in a plush armchair, a beautiful little crib beside her.

My daughter was asleep inside, tucked under the finest velvet blanket, a far cry from the rough cloth I wore.

When I came in, Vivian smiled and settled more comfortably into her chair.

"Flora, you're here. I heard you really wanted to see my child, so I called you in to see her."

She emphasized the words "my child," as if she wanted to remind me of something.

I couldn't stop staring at my daughter. Then I dug my nails into my palms and forced myself to look away.

"Thank you for your kindness, Donna."

Vivian nodded, satisfied, and stroked the baby's head.

"I also called you here because there's something I need to make clear.

"You grew up on the Voss estate, so we know exactly who you are. And Felix is so bright and sweet.

"That's the only reason I allowed you to get pregnant again. Otherwise, someone of your station would never have been allowed to share the Don's bed.

"But you also need to know what you can say and what must stay buried forever. Otherwise, I'll have no choice but to throw you and both your children off this estate."

I nodded numbly as she spoke of what they had done to me as though it were a gift.

"All right, go do your job. The gardens need tending. It's time you got back to work."

I stole one last look at my daughter and slowly walked out.

I weeded, watered, fertilized, and hauled flowerpots.

I kept bending over until my hands shook and the wound in my abdomen split open again.

As blood ran down my legs and dripped onto the ground, I heard Vivian laughing upstairs.

"Look, our little Caterina smiled."

So she'd named my daughter Caterina.

That was my last thought before I passed out.

When I woke up, Vivian was holding Elias's hand with a hurt look on her face.

"I didn't mean for this to happen. I only told her to go back to her old job. How was I supposed to know she'd pass out?"

Elias patted her hand gently.

"I believe you. Don't worry about it. Go be with Caterina. This isn't your fault."

After Vivian left, he came over to my wooden bed. When our eyes met, he paused.

"Good, you're awake. Your body hasn't fully recovered yet. I've already told Vivian to let you off work for a while.

"She just doesn't know what a woman goes through after giving birth. Running the estate is her duty as Donna. She wasn't singling you out."

Once, Elias had held my hand and told me that being the nanny's daughter made me no less worthy than anyone else. To him, I was the most precious thing in the world.

But now, after I'd given him two children, he hadn't once asked how I felt. All he did was self-righteously defend the woman who had hurt me.

"I understand. It's the Donna's duty. I won't say anything more."

Elias looked at me, a little surprised.

I knew why.

When my first child was born, I fought with everything I had to keep him. I clung to a servant's hand for dear life. Even though I was still bleeding and leaving a trail of blood across the floor, I refused to let go.

For a whole year after that, I seized every chance I got to see my son.

Every time I saw Elias, I wept and begged him to give me a place in my son's life, anything that would let me see him openly.

But today, my tears had finally run dry.

At last, Elias looked at me, and his voice softened a little.

"I'm glad you understand. Felix is now heir to the Voss family, and Caterina will be cherished by Vivian and me. They'll be happy for the rest of their lives."

I nodded and said nothing, as docile as he could have wanted.

The clock struck nine. It was time for him to go read to the children with Vivian.

Their family was always so happy together.

Before he left, he tucked the blanket around me.

"I know you're unhappy. But Vivian will never be a real mother because of me. I owe her.

"As long as you keep being good, someday I'll make it up to you. We'll have a child we can call our own."

He owed Vivian, and he was paying her back with my children.

How unfair.

After Elias left, I turned to the maid beside me and quietly asked.

"The estate's been so much quieter lately. Did another group of servants leave?"

The maid, not suspecting anything, nodded.

"A few days ago, the Donna gave severance pay to all the servants aged 60 and over, so a lot of the older ones left."

I smiled and didn't say anything else.

My mother, Margaret Bennett, was one of those longtime servants.

Now that the only person I still worried about was safely away, there was no reason for me to stay on this cold estate anymore.

When the Voss family sent someone to ask Mom to return to the estate and care for the children, I was upstairs reading.Hugo was so deferential that he was practically groveling. Whenever he spoke to Mom, he seemed to make himself smaller without even realizing it.He was a longtime member of the estate staff and had only ever behaved that way around its true masters.Half an hour later, Mom saw Hugo out and came upstairs to find me."Hugo says the Don wants me to come back and take care of the children."As their grandmother."I hesitated for a moment, then nodded."That's good. I wouldn't trust anyone else with the kids anyway. With you there, I can stop worrying."Mom looked at me, worry filling her face."But what about you?"I closed the book and answered evenly."Once you're back, mention me to Elias now and then. Tell him how much I used to love him."When his guilt over me reaches its peak, I'll show myself. Only then can I use that guilt to reclaim my place as their mother."M

When Elias went to see the children, Felix asked him in a small voice."Daddy, why won't they let me see Mommy?"Elias answered in a strained voice."Because she isn't your real mommy."Felix's eyes went wide."Then who's my real mommy? Doesn't she want me?"Elias froze where he stood, not knowing how to begin. What could he say?Tell him about the screaming on the day she gave birth, and the trail of blood on the floor where she'd been dragged away?Or about everything she'd gone through in the years after, just to catch one glimpse of him?He didn't dare tell his son."No. She loved you so much. She tried every way she could to see you."It's my fault. I wouldn't let her see you."Felix looked at him, confused."Why?"Elias's voice was hoarse."Because I'm an idiot. I did something wrong."Felix asked another question."Then where's Mommy now?"Elias was quiet for a long time before he managed a strained smile."She's mad at me, so she went somewhere I can't find her."Felix nodded a

Marco looked grim as he brought Elias a new report."Don, I confirmed it. That day, the Donna secretly ordered everyone on the estate to withhold food and water from Flora until she starved to death."Elias gave Marco a sharp look."Are you sure?"Marco lowered his head."I'm sure. Hugo and the Donna's maid both admitted it."Elias closed his eyes, hiding every trace of emotion."Bring Vivian to me."The moment Vivian saw Elias, she burst into tears. Looking fragile and pitiful, she tried to throw her arms around him.But Elias coldly pushed her away.Vivian stared at him in disbelief."Elias, are you still angry?"I'm the Donna of the Voss family, your lawful wife. Have you forgotten everything we've been through?"I risked my life for you. I took a bullet for you! And now you're going to blame me for some lowly maid?!"Elias took a deep breath."She wasn't some lowly maid. She was Felix and Caterina's mother, and she was—"Vivian cut him off, her voice rising to a shriek."She was wh

When Mom saw me, her face lit up in surprise and joy. Then she noticed how pale I was, and she couldn't stop crying."Flora? Is it really you, Flora?"My own eyes burned with tears. I threw myself into Mom's arms, and we held each other tight."It's me, Mom. I'm home!"A long time passed before Mom's sobs finally subsided. She cupped my face and asked softly."How did you get here? Did the Don finally let you go?"At that, Mom's voice caught again."It's all my fault. If I'd never gone to work at the Voss estate in the first place, you'd never have gone through any of this."Watching them take your children, watching the Donna go after you, it broke my heart. But I was just a servant. I couldn't do anything for you."And I know the only reason you never left the Voss estate was me."I'm sorry, Flora. I'm so sorry..."I gently wiped away Mom's tears."Don't cry, Mom. I've never blamed you."This is all their fault. I'm going to make them pay!"Mom's eyes went wide."But they're the Don

Vivian stared blankly at Elias."You're the Don of the Voss family. How can you say something so beneath you?"Elias glared at her."And what about you? You're the Donna of the Voss family. Why was Flora the one person you couldn't tolerate?!"Vivian's eyes went wide."You think I did this?"Elias's voice was cold."The Voss estate went 100 years without a single major fire, yet that shed burned down right after you had its door nailed shut."Even your excuse for nailing it shut was based on a fabricated accusation. How am I supposed to believe you?"Vivian opened and closed her mouth several times, then forced out a strained explanation."As Donna, I was only trying to uphold order and decency on the estate."Elias gripped the photo tightly."Over a few rumors, you had her sealed inside that shed."What if there hadn't been a fire? What were you going to do? Let her die of thirst or starvation in there?!"A flicker of guilt passed through Vivian's eyes, but she still clung to her prid

Elias called in the family's private jet and was back at the estate that same night. But it was too late. All that remained was the acrid smell of smoke and the charred wreck of the shed. When Elias returned, the servants on the estate turned pale and didn't dare speak. Finally, Hugo Moretti, the butler, stepped forward hesitantly and spoke in a low voice."Don, the fire was too intense. There's nothing left inside."Elias whipped out his gun and pointed it at Hugo's head, his voice frighteningly cold."Why didn't anyone get Flora out? You should all know the Voss family has no use for dead weight."Hugo shook from head to toe, tears running down his weathered face."Please, please don't kill me."It's not that we didn't try. It's, it's that the Donna had us nail the shed door shut beforehand. By the time the fire started, it was too late to get it open."Elias stood frozen for a long while. Then, very slowly, he asked."Nailed it shut? Why?"Hugo kept his head down and answered quietl
