Chapter 3

Author: Cece West
Ilaria's POV

In the blink of an eye, it was Mia's birthday. Dazzling lights illuminated every corner of the De Luca residenza.

The guests who came to the celebration lavished praise on the decorations and food. After learning that I was the one who prepared everything, astonishment was written all over their faces.

"It looks like Don De Luca has really grown tired of her. If not, knowing her, there's no way she'd willingly do all this."

"But Ilaria and Don De Luca are still engaged. He'll probably honor their engagement and marry her."

I pretended not to hear them and did my best to remain poised and composed.

The opening dance's melody drifted through the air. As tradition dictated, the opening dance was supposed to be performed by Enzo and me, his future Donna.

However, he walked straight toward Mia, who was standing beside me. "It's Mia's birthday. She should have the opening dance," he said.

I remained silent, letting the two of them waltz gracefully in the center of the dance floor.

All the eyes of the famiglia darted back and forth between us. The way everyone looked at her had changed.

Enzo had passed over his future Donna and chosen Mia as his dance partner. Everyone knew exactly what that meant.

However, he didn't care. He never considered the position he put me in. Fortunately, I didn't care anymore either.

When the dance came to an end, I walked up to Mia and handed her a gift box. Inside was the one thing she wanted most—an engagement agreement between her and Enzo.

Yet, as soon as she was about to unbox it, the floral pillar beside us suddenly toppled over. Panic seized me, and without a second thought, I shoved Mia out of the way.

The pillar struck my arm before collapsing completely. Excruciating pain shot through me, and I suspected my arm was probably fractured..

Ignoring the pain, I hurriedly helped Mia up to check on her. However, she stared at me in fear. "Why did you deliberately knock over the flower pillar, Ilaria?"

After hearing that, Enzo shoved me aside, scooped Mia into his arms, and looked at me icily. "I knew you were pretending to be magnanimous these last few days, Ilaria! I don't expect you to be a kind and merciful Donna, but you shouldn't resort to something like this to hurt Mia! If anything happens to her baby, I won't tolerate this kind of behavior from you again!"

I crashed to the ground, landing on my injured arm. The pain was so intense that my vision went black, robbing me of my voice. Without sparing me another glance, Enzo carried Mia away.

After he left, the others finally mustered the courage to help me. The person closest to me helped me to my feet, and upon catching sight of my deformed forearm, gasped, "Ilaria, you're hurt!"

Everyone rushed me to the De Luca famiglia's hospital.

An eerie silence hung over the hospital, manned by just a skeleton crew of nurses. They gathered around me as cold sweat broke out all over my body from the pain, at a loss.

"Don De Luca has ordered all the doctors to attend to Signorina Conti. There's no one here who can treat your arm right now." One of them gave me some painkillers and told me to lie down and rest for the time being.

In the cold, pin-drop silent hospital room, both the pain and the last trace of affection I had for Enzo slowly ebbed away. Once again, I was painfully reminded that the Enzo who used to insist I undergo a full-body checkup just because I scraped my skin was gone. He now gave all his trust and care to Mia.

Ilaria's POVMy words didn't register with Enzo. He took a step forward and hurriedly pleaded with me, "It was all a misunderstanding! I know I messed up. I've already driven Mia away. She'll never show her face in front of you again. "I've uncovered the truth. I failed you, but I'm begging you to give me one more chance. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you—" I didn't feel vindicated as I watched him beg so desperately. I only felt hollow. I had been just like him. I'd loved him more than I loved myself, and I'd walked on eggshells to preserve our relationship. Yet, what did that get me? I was neglected, treated with indifference, and hurt so badly that I died of depression. "Enzo," I cut him off. "The damage you've done to me can never be undone."Enzo shuddered, as if my words had shattered the last thing holding him together. "I don't need you to make it up to me, and I don't need your remorse." I looked him dead in the eye. "I'm very happy right now. Alessi

  • I Gave the Don to His First Love   Chapter 8

Ilaria's POVAfter leaving, I cut all contact with Enzo. Papa arranged for me to meet Alessio Vitale, the heir to the Vitale famiglia. Papa told me that he would one day become the king of the entire underworld and that I would be happy if I married him. After what happened with Enzo, I didn't have particularly high expectations. Yet, on the day we met, Alessio wore a black trench coat and greeted me warmly. His towering figure and striking features immediately captured my undivided attention. "Buonasera, Signora Giulia." His voice was deep and magnetic, like the resonant hum of a cello string. He then courteously pulled out a chair for me, inviting me to take a seat. Once we were seated, he made no effort to flaunt his wealth or status. Instead, he casually asked me how I liked my coffee. Conversation flowed easily throughout the afternoon. He was exceptionally well-spoken, offering unique perspectives without ever being pushy or aggressive. More importantly, whenever h

Third-Person POVMia clutched her cheek and was wide awake in a heartbeat. However, she had no idea where she had slipped up until Enzo showed her the surveillance footage. "You framed Ilaria!" Enzo's eyes bulged, and he looked as if he wanted to tear her apart.Looking at her own deceitful, malicious expression on the screen, Mia blanched. She parted her lips to defend herself, yet she realized that all her excuses were useless in the face of such clear evidence. "No… It's not like that, Enzo! I can explain!" Mia hurriedly grasped his sleeve. Tears spilled over her eyes. "I only did it because I love you too much. I was afraid Ilaria would steal you away from me. S-So, I had a momentary lapse of judgment. I did it for our future!" "Our future?" Enzo scoffed as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. He abruptly flung her hand away with so much force that she stumbled and hit the headboard. "You were never part of my future! I've only ever had eyes on Ilaria. You were

Third-Person POVBefore his men could locate Ilaria, Enzo discovered something else. One of his men brought him a clip of surveillance footage they had stumbled upon while tracking down Ilaria's whereabouts. "I think you should take a look at it, Don De Luca. Signora Conti... may not be suitable to become our famiglia's Donna."Enzo massaged his throbbing temple and retorted, "I never planned on making Mia my Donna." Without saying a single word, his subordinate played the clip and handed it to him. The surveillance footage showed the housekeepers decorating the venue for Mia's birthday party exactly as Ilaria had instructed. Mia appeared and handed one of the housekeepers a thick wad of cash. As soon as she left, the housekeeper, who had been carefully setting up one of the flower pillars, suddenly snapped it in half and painstakingly disguised it to look intact. The scene shifted to the day of the birthday party. When Ilaria walked over, Mia deliberately lingered next to

Third-Person POVEnzo felt restless at the private hospital. Given Ilaria's personality, she should've thrown a fit the moment she found out he had gone out alone with Mia. Yet, it was way too quiet at the moment. He called Ilaria, but no one answered. Panic surged through him, and he sprang to his feet, making a beeline for the exit. He had to go home and check on her. Mia stopped him. "Where are you going? I haven't finished my checkup yet."He paused for a moment and, for the first time, broke free from her hold. "The doctor said you're perfectly healthy. There's no need to continue with the checkup. Let's head home first."Sensing that something was off with him, Mia didn't dare to deliberately stop him again. …As soon as Enzo and Mia returned to the estate, the first thing they saw was the pile of ash in the front yard. Enzo's heart sank. "What happened here?" he demanded, barking at the housekeepers gathered there. The housekeepers were as silent as the grave, too f

  • I Gave the Don to His First Love   Chapter 4

Ilaria's POVTwo days later, with my fractured arm in a cast, I was discharged from the hospital. When I returned to the De Luca residenza, I was met with the scene of Enzo coaxing Mia to eat. The two of them were cuddled up together like a real couple. Enzo turned around when he heard footsteps. His brows drew together as a trace of concern flashed through his cold eyes. "You haven't been home in two days. Were you trying to make me worry about you?" Right after saying that, he finally noticed the cast on my arm. He sprang to his feet and demanded, "What happened? Why are you injured?"I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on him, so I responded nonchalantly, "It's no big deal. I accidentally sprained it."His belated concern vanished in an instant, and his earlier indifference and impatience returned. "In that case, don't make such a spectacle of it. You'll only make people worry." I hummed in response and made my way toward the bedroom. Enzo, however, stopped me. "You
