Chapter 4

Author: Sain
Patricia immediately looked up. “Mindy, do you remember Mr. George from Advance Corporation? Last week, he gave me a call and told me that Advance Corporation is expanding. Their administration department is hiring, and he asked if I’m interested.”

“What did you say?”

“I didn’t say yes. I told him I’d consider it.” Patricia smiled bitterly. “If I knew this was going to happen, I would’ve just agreed to his request.”

“It’s not too late to say yes now,” I said. “Ask him how many positions they are looking to fill.”

“Are you saying that… we’d all join them?”

“Let’s try our luck. If that doesn’t work, we’ll figure something else out.”

Patricia immediately took out her phone. “I’ll call him now.”

Sam’s eyes lit up. “Mindy, Advance Corporation is one of the top companies in our industry! If we can go over…”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” I said. “We have to keep this a secret. Before we officially resign, we can’t let the company know where we’re heading.”

“Why?”

“Hank will definitely take revenge. In the past, when he started his business, he poached talent from Mr. George. In light of that, they have bad blood. If he finds out that we are all planning to join Advance Corporation, he’ll definitely play dirty tricks on us.”

“Got it,” Sam said, nodding. “We’ll listen to you, Mindy.”

Patricia was on the phone for half an hour.

After the call ended, she came out smiling.

“Mr. George said Advance Corporation is planning to set up a new administration center, and they need a complete team. If we’re interested, we can all go there.”

“What about the pay and benefits?”

“They’ll give us a 30% increment from our salary, and they’ll be giving out bonuses based on their financial quarters. They’ll also cover all statutory payments for us. He can arrange interviews for us starting next week.”

Autumn stood up in excitement. “Really?”

“Mr. George said it himself. Of course, it’s true.”

Sam slapped his thigh. “Then, what are we waiting for?”

“Let’s not rush,” I said, rubbing my hands together. “There are a few things that we have to do.

“Firstly, tidy and organize all the information you have on hand. Make copies and take photos of everything.

“Secondly, continue working as usual. Don’t show any signs that we’ll be leaving. We’ll only submit our resignation letters once we complete our interviews and receive an official offer.

“Thirdly, let’s try to find the law for resignation. We have to make sure they follow it strictly in terms of compensation.

“Finally,” I said, then paused. “There’s something wrong with this company’s accounts, and we have the evidence.”

All four of them looked at me.

“Last year, when we were treating the clients, Hank asked us to put it on the company’s tab for his personal expenses. Have you forgotten about that? And as for those few business trips that he brought his mistress on, he put his flight and hotel expenditures on the company’s account too.”

Sam gasped. “That’s fraud…”

“That’s not all,” I said. “Three of our suppliers are companies belonging to Hank’s uncle. Every year, we pay them millions of dollars, but they do nothing for us. These dealings are suspicious, as they’re taking up the company’s resources.”

Patricia’s expression changed. “Mindy, are you saying…”

“I have said nothing.” I looked at her. “I’m just reminding you to keep your receipts. Just in case you need it, you’ll still have evidence.”

Everyone nodded absent-mindedly.

The next week, our potential job-hopping strategy was going according to plan.

Advance Corporation was serious about poaching us. Adrian George personally arranged our interviews, and all five of us passed the interviews and received our offers.

Our start date would fall on the first day of the following month. It was perfect for our notice period.

I thought everything was going according to plan.

Then, Friday afternoon, Hank suddenly called for an urgent meeting via company email.

[All staff have to attend an emergency meeting at three in the afternoon. There are some important updates on company resources.]

My heart sank.

At three in the afternoon, the meeting room was filled with all the company’s employees.

Hank stood at the front, and an unfamiliar young man stood next to him. The young man wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, and he was dressed professionally. It was obvious that he had studied overseas.

“I have one announcement to make today.”

Three months ago, we were humiliated at the annual dinner when we got brooms as gifts. Three months later, we made an impact in the new company and doubled our income. Besides that, we even had an additional income stream. As for our previous company, they did not pass the audit, and the client wanted to terminate their agreement. William’s team had left. The suppliers raised their prices and reduced the credit terms. There was a huge mess that no one was taking care of. It was rumored that Hank and Andrea were fighting every day in the office as they blamed each other. There were some issues with the finance department too. Someone contacted the authorities and reported that the company was faking invoices, engaging in bribery, and exploiting the company’s assets. The tax bureau was already involved in investigating the report. The report was very detailed with supporting documents on the time, amount, and procedures. Who reported them?No one knew. However, the i

Autumn passed me my phone. “Mindy, your ex-boss has just sent you a text message.”I took the phone to have a look. [Ms. Newton, can you do us a favor? We require a professional like you. We can discuss your pay and benefits further.]I laughed and passed the phone back to Autumn. “I’m not going to reply to him.”When he was claiming that we brought bad luck, did he think of what would potentially happen after?Hank sent me another text message a day after that.[Mindy, we’ve worked together for eight years. Why are you being so cruel?]I still did not reply to him. On the third day, he called me instead. I declined every single call he made. When I returned home after work, I saw a familiar person crouching at my apartment complex. It was Hank. “Mindy!” When he saw me, he immediately approached me. “Why didn’t you answer my calls? I’ve been waiting for you for three hours!” “Mr. Reid, how do you know where I stay?”“Your address is in your employee profile.”I fr

“Who’s the new head of the administration department?”“Mr. Elliot.”They were speechless.Conversations like that kept happening every single day. William’s team was handicapped by all the processes, access limits, and rules. The international experience that they were so proud of was useless in the face of these trivial tasks. What troubled them more was the issues that started to arise with the suppliers. The suppliers who had worked with the company for a long time realized they were dealing with new people. Hence, they started to change their stance. “I’m sorry, but I’ll only work with Ms. Newton. If you change the person-in-charge, we’ll have to draft a new contract.”“The previous credit terms? We also have to re-negotiate for that.”“The price? Of course, we’re going to come up with new prices. After all, the nature of this collaboration has changed.”William was furious. He went to complain to Hank, and Hank called me over for a scolding. “Mindy! Why aren’t the

I froze. How did he know about Advance Corporation?William smiled and left with his team without giving me an explanation. Patricia’s face turned pale. “Mindy, how did he…”“Someone tipped him off,” I said through gritted teeth. “Maybe someone at Advance Corporation leaked the news, or Hank might have sent someone to spy on us.” “Then, what do we do?” Autumn was about to cry. “We can’t go to Advance Corporation due to the non-compete agreement. We’re basically stuck!”“Not to mention that assessment!” Sam punched the wall. “It’s basically a setup! Education? I have a degree! Foreign language? I only know one language! He’s basically forcing us to leave!” I remained quiet for a while. “He wants us to go through his assessments. Then, let’s go through them.”“What?” Sam’s eyes widened in shock. “Mindy, that’s just a ruse!”“Yes, we’re just doing it for show.” I looked at him. “Hank just wants us to back off and give up on our own, but we won’t.”“But…”“Listen to me,” I

Hank cleared his throat. “The company has decided to upgrade and change our administration department and set up a new administration center. This is William Elliot, my nephew. He has just graduated from an overseas university. In the future, he’ll be fully in charge of the administration center.”Everyone started murmuring. William nodded at the employees and smiled politely. “Hello, everyone. I’m looking forward to working with all of you.”Hank continued, “The original colleagues from the administration department can participate in the new round of interviews. You may stay after you pass all the assessments. For those of you who can’t pass…”He glanced at me. “The company will compensate you based on employment law. Of course, you can immediately receive the compensation and leave if you wish to.”Sam cursed softly next to me.Autumn’s face turned pale. Hank then said, “But there is an important audit happening next month for an important client. Before the audit is ov
