Chapter 3

作者: Yes to Tacos
Linda froze, apparently not expecting me to be so direct.

"She told me that you and your wife weren't getting along and were planning to divorce. She said you were lonely and wanted to give us a chance to get to know each other."

She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, looking slightly embarrassed.

Just as I thought. I laughed bitterly to myself but kept my expression neutral. "Did she mention that I'm still married? That my wife is just away on a business trip?"

Linda's expression turned strange, but she nodded. "She did mention it. She said that as long as you want to, I could help you get out of this unhappy marriage as quickly as possible."

She looked at me with what seemed like genuine sincerity. And I felt insulted.

I picked up the steaming cup of coffee in front of me and dumped it onto the floor at her feet. Linda jumped up, staring at me in shock.

"I don't care what Monica told you, but let me make something very clear. This is my home. I have a legal wife, and every second you spend here is an insult to me and my family."

I stood and pointed at the door. "Get out of my house. Now."

Linda gaped at me. She tried to stammer out an explanation, but my icy stare silenced her. In the end, she fled the apartment in humiliation.

Monica didn't drag herself home until that evening. The moment she walked in and saw me calmly watching TV on the couch, her expression darkened.

"Dad! Where's Ms. Calcraft?"

I didn't bother looking up. "I threw her out."

"What!" Monica's voice shot up an octave. "How could you do that? I went through so much trouble to invite her over! Even if you don't like her, you can't just kick someone out like that! You're being completely unreasonable!"

I finally turned to face her. "I'm going to say this one last time. I am not getting a divorce. Tell your brother to stop scheming too, or don't blame me for forgetting we're family."

Now that I'd called her out directly, Monica couldn't keep up the pretense anymore. She stormed off to her room, her face twisted with anger.

When they couldn't make any progress with me, she and Jason turned their attention to their mother instead.

A few days later, Claire returned from her business trip.

I got up in the middle of the night for a glass of water. As I passed the study, I heard hushed voices inside. I stopped instinctively and pressed myself against the door.

Jason's voice drifted out, thick with concern. "Mom, there's something Monica and I don't know if we should tell you."

"What's with all the secrecy?" Claire sounded impatient.

"Mom, Dad… Dad might be seeing someone else." Monica's voice cracked with tears, sounding utterly pitiful.

The study fell silent for a moment.

"That's nonsense!" Claire snapped. "Your father isn't like that!"

"Mom, we didn't want to believe it either!" Jason said, sounding distressed. "But we saw it with our own eyes! While you were away, a woman came to the house!"

"Mom, if you don't divorce him now, what's going to happen when Dad brings that homewrecker home? What about your dignity?" Monica's voice dissolved into sobs.

She continued, "I know he's my father, but when he does something wrong, we can't just look the other way. Think about it. If he's this bold now, what's he going to do later? If you ask me, you should take him straight to court! Make sure he leaves with nothing!

"Mom, you've worked so hard and saved for so many years. Are you really going to stand by and watch him spend it all on some other woman?"

After the trial ended, I walked slowly out of the courthouse alone."Mr. Bennett." A familiar voice called out to me.I turned to find the female judge standing there. She'd taken off her robes and changed into casual clothes. She walked up beside me, looking at me with sympathy and encouragement. "Don't be too hard on yourself. It's all over now. At least things ended well for you."She paused, speaking gently, "You still have a long life ahead of you. I hope from now on, you can truly live for yourself."I nodded, a warmth spreading through my chest. "Thank you."She smiled, looking past me toward someone in the distance. "Go on. Don't keep her waiting."I followed her gaze. Under a massive plane tree, Linda stood quietly. The fading sunlight stretched her shadow long across the ground. She watched me from afar, her expression carrying the same nervousness and clarity it had held more than 30 years ago, when she was just a little girl.Memories began to surface. I remembered

I took out two documents from my briefcase and handed one to the bailiff."This is a copy of a substantial life insurance policy and family trust contract that my son Jason and daughter Monica purchased for my wife Claire Shaw and me three months ago."My gaze swept coldly over the siblings, whose faces had turned deathly pale."Please note the purchase date on this policy. It was exactly one week before they first urged me to get divorced. Now please look carefully at the beneficiary clause. It states clearly that the insured parties are myself and Claire."If either party causes the marriage to fail due to serious misconduct and is ordered by the court to forfeit marital assets, that party automatically loses all beneficiary rights."The entire insurance payout and trust assets would then go to the designated beneficiaries, namely my children, Jason and Monica Bennett."Everyone was stunned by these outrageous terms. In the gallery, the neighbors who had been cursing me moment

The bailiff connected the phone to the courtroom's sound system. Monica's voice, clear and urgent, filled the entire place."Ms. Calcraft, my dad's a bit shy. You'll need to take the initiative! Just hang around our apartment complex more often. Create some chances to run into him. Talk to him more, and show him you care."Here's my mom's business trip schedule. Time it right..."Yes, these next few days. I'll find an opportunity to invite you to the house and give my dad a surprise!"Each recording struck like a sledgehammer, hitting everyone hard.In the recordings, Monica's voice was nothing like the pitiful, victimized daughter she'd played in court. Instead, she sounded calculating and manipulative, patiently coaching Linda on exactly how to pursue me.The mood in the gallery shifted completely."My God! What kind of daughter does this? Setting her own father up with a mistress?""And domestic violence? Look at her mom. She looks furious, not like someone who beats her hus

The judge nodded and granted my request."Call the witness, Linda Calcraft, to the stand."The moment the judge spoke Linda's name, all three people at the plaintiff's table went pale. They never expected I would summon the "homewrecker" herself as my witness. As everyone stared in disbelief, the side door of the courtroom opened. Linda walked in, her expression solemn. The moment she appeared, before she could even reach the witness stand, Claire completely lost control. She shot up from her chair and pointed at Linda, her eyes bloodshot as she screamed, "It's you! You're the mistress! You're the homewrecker who destroyed my family! How dare you show your face here!""That's right!" Monica shouted. "That's her! Your Honor, she's the woman who's been having an affair with my father!""We all saw it!" Jason chimed in. "She's the homewrecker!"The courtroom erupted. The spectators in the gallery looked ready to rush forward and pelt Linda with eggs. Vile insults filled the air.

My question cut right through their seemingly airtight logic. The entire courtroom fell silent. That was right. If a man was determined to have an affair, and his children were supporting a divorce, why wouldn't he just get divorced? Why would he choose the most foolish path, the one most likely to destroy his reputation? It didn't make sense. At the plaintiff's table, Claire froze. She was never particularly quick-witted. Her eyes began to dart around, and a flicker of doubt crossed her face, as if my words were getting through to her.She probably couldn't figure out what my motive could possibly be.Seeing his mother about to waver right there in court, Jason panicked. He shot to his feet and blurted, "Your Honor! I know why!"He turned to me, his eyes full of what looked like pain and disappointment."Because my father cares about his reputation! He's afraid that if he divorces my mother and immediately moves on to someone else, the neighbors will gossip."So he's stalling,

The siblings played good cop and bad cop, smearing me relentlessly without batting an eye.I knew Claire well. Listening to her breathing grow heavier and more labored, I could tell she was starting to waver.A few more days passed. I ran through the timeline. The timing should be about right.I dialed a number and asked calmly, "Is everything I asked you to prepare ready?""Don't worry," came the reply. "Everything's in place."Sure enough, two days later in the afternoon, the doorbell rang. A summons from Family Court was delivered into my hands. The plaintiff, Claire Shaw, was seeking a divorce, claiming I had cheated during our marriage. She wanted the court to grant the divorce and make sure I left with nothing as the guilty party.Walking into the courtroom again, I felt nothing but calm. The gallery was packed with spectators. Neighbors had come to watch the drama unfold. They whispered to each other and pointed at me. Their looks of contempt and morbid curiosity stung.
