Chapter 2

مؤلف: Snowbelle
Anastasia's POV

A searing pain tore across my tongue, and the metallic tang of blood flooded my mouth. Still, I didn't make a sound.

Instead, Timothy's body went rigid. Every bit of pain from biting my tongue was transferred to him in full.

He tightened his grip on my shoulder, the veins standing out across the back of his hand.

"Ana!"

Suddenly, he realized what was happening and forgot about himself. Panic seized him as he bent down and tried to pry my jaw open.

"Let go!"

I refused. If anything, I bit down harder.

Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth and ran down Timothy's fingers. Yet, it felt strangely satisfying.

He had no idea that everything I'd suffered in his place over the past three years had been infinitely worse.

Timothy turned toward the door and bellowed, "Someone get the doctor! Now!"

In an instant, hurried footsteps thundered outside.

Edna stumbled through the door. The instant she saw the blood around my mouth, she screamed.

Before I knew it, Sarah rushed over and grabbed Timothy's arm. "What happened to Anastasia? This is all my fault. If I hadn't asked to come live here, she wouldn't have…"

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she spoke.

Somehow, the panic on Timothy's face eased the moment he saw her crying. He reached over with one hand and reassured her, saying, "This has nothing to do with you. Don't cry."

He was making sure neither of us was neglected. How considerate.

The doctor was drenched in sweat as he looked helplessly at Timothy. "General, she won't let go. What should we do?"

Timothy's expression darkened at once. He gently pushed Sarah aside before cupping my face in both hands.

"Come on. Let go."

But I refused to look at him.

At last, his patience snapped. He shot to his feet and pointed at Edna, who was on her knees nearby.

"If you don't let go, I'll have them drag her outside and beat her to death!" he said, his voice cold with murderous intent.

The color drained from Edna's face, but she bit her lip and didn't make a sound. A beat later, she said, "I'm not afraid, Mrs. Grayson. Please, don't worry about me."

My heart lurched, and my jaw finally relaxed. Edna had been loyal to me. I couldn't let her suffer because of me.

The doctor hurried over and sprinkled medicinal powder onto the wound. It took several long minutes before he finally managed to stop the bleeding.

I didn't know how long I'd been out. By the time I woke, the lamps had already been lit.

Edna sat beside my bed, her eyes swollen from crying.

At that moment, Sarah's laughter drifted in from outside, followed by Timothy's low, gentle voice.

Then, they walked in together.

Sarah held a flower with two blossoms growing from the same stem. She held it up to Timothy and asked with a smile, "Isn't it beautiful, General Grayson?"

A smile played at the corners of his mouth as he nodded.

My gaze settled on the twin blossoms, and it felt as though someone were slowly carving into my chest.

Three years ago, during Timothy's first battle, a stray arrow had pierced straight through his back.

When the pain reached me, I was sitting by the window embroidering a shirt for him. The next second, I'd toppled out of my chair and hit the floor, my entire body convulsing from agony.

Timothy had rushed home that very night. Fumbling, he pulled a tiny wildflower from inside his coat and gently tucked it behind my ear.

His fingertips brushed my cheek, and his voice was soft yet hoarse as he said, "Ana, my life is yours as much as it's mine."

I couldn't bring myself to throw the flower away. Instead, I pressed it between the pages of a book and kept it there until the petals had crumbled to dust.

Now, he'd never remember that little wildflower again.

"Ana, you're awake!"

Just then, Sarah stepped closer with a bright smile.

My gaze dropped to her wrist and stayed there. The familiar pearl bracelet was my mother's keepsake—the one she'd left behind for me.

But now, it rested on Sarah's slender wrist.

I jerked my head up.

"That bracelet…" My injured tongue slurred the words. "It belonged to my mother."

Timothy merely glanced at me. "You made such a scene earlier that you frightened Sarah. She said she liked the bracelet on your table, so I let her have it. Call it your apology."

In that instant, all the blood, sweat, and tears I'd endured over the past three years suddenly meant nothing.

I almost laughed at myself. But then, I took a deep breath and said, "General, I'd like to step down and let Ms. Tucker take my place as your wife."

At last, a flicker of satisfaction crossed Timothy's face.

"Now this is the Anastasia I know."

He bent down again, leaning closer. "When you started talking about dying earlier, you nearly frightened me to death. Don't say such things again, okay?"

I simply looked at him.

Timothy thought I'd finally given in and chosen to step aside. He had no idea that I wasn't fighting anymore because I'd already decided to let him go.

I was going home.

"You're right. I won't bring it up again," I said softly.

Third-Person POVTimothy's lips parted as he tried to call Anastasia's name. But something seemed lodged in his throat, and not a sound came out. He glanced down at himself, only to find that he was covered in blood. His armor was riddled with holes where arrows had punched through. Blood seeped from every opening, coating his hands in red.In a place so clean and bright, Timothy looked completely out of place. Even so, he kept walking toward her. With every step, he left another bloody footprint on the floor. Anastasia, too, saw Timothy. Her gaze drifted from the acceptance letter to the man who had suddenly appeared at the far end of the hallway. She frowned slightly, as if she were trying to place him. Then, her expression relaxed. Her eyes held nothing at all."Ana."At last, Timothy found his voice. However, it was hoarse and nothing like the voice of the young man Anastasia had once known. "It's you," he said. Anastasia calmly folded the acceptance letter and

His hands were trembling. They all knew the truth. His body was giving out. Everyone had tried to talk him out of it, but he refused to listen. Timothy went anyway. Standing atop the city walls, he looked down at the dark mass of enemy troops below. Suddenly, his thoughts drifted back to the first day he'd gone to war. Anastasia had stood in the doorway to see him off. Her lips were pressed into a thin line, and her eyes were red-rimmed. Even then, she refused to cry. She tightened the clasp of Timothy's cloak over and over, her cold fingertips brushing his neck."Come home soon," she said. But now, Timothy had nothing left. So, when the arrows came raining down, he didn't move. The first one punched through his sho

Anastasia's POVSure enough, when I woke up on the morning of the fourth day, the crushing weight on my chest was finally gone. I sat up in bed and stretched, feeling lighter than I had in the past few days. At that moment, a notification popped up on my phone. It was from the grad school exam group chat. The text read, "The exam results are out! Go check your scores!"I opened the results page and entered my applicant ID. The page loaded, and two seconds later, a single line of text appeared. I stared at it for what felt like forever. Erica leaned over from her bed. She took one look at the screen and let out a shriek. "Oh shit! Ana, you got in! You got into your dream school!"She was even more excited than I was. Right then and there, she posted about it on social media. I looked at the acceptance notice on my screen, and a smile slowly spread across my face. There was no bitterness, no regret, and not once did I find myself wishing he were there. There was nothing at

He turned away, walked back to the pool of blood, and gathered up Anastasia's bloodstained dress, clutching it to his chest.Meanwhile, Sarah's desperate cries faded into the distance as the guards dragged her out of the tent. Silence settled over the tent. Timothy was the only one left. Slowly, he crouched down and buried his face in the bloodstained fabric. Third-Person POVTimothy walked toward Sarah, each step landing in Anastasia's blood and carving deeper into his chest. "You told me you were innocent," he began. "That you didn't understand how complicated these things were."He crouched in front of Sarah, grabbed her chin, and forced her to meet his eyes. "You were the one who talked me into sending her to the south gate. "You said she was too gentle to make any difference, that she was the perfect person to boost the troops' morale."Sarah's lips trembled, and tears pooled in her eyes. "I-I was just—""Just what?"Timothy's voice dropped so low that it sent a chill down her spine. He went on, "You wore her mother's pearl bracelet and flaunted it in front of her. You said you liked it, so I let you have it. "You said she frightened you, so I made her apologize. You claimed the barbarians might have violated her, and I forced that tonic down her throat."A bitter laugh escaped him, edged with despair. It was as if he'd f

Timothy seemed to sense something, and he looked down abruptly. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on my hands as they slowly turned transparent. "N-no!"He tightened his arms around me desperately, trying to hold me against his chest. But my body slipped through his fingers like sand. The tighter he held on, the faster I disappeared. "Ana! Don't go! Come back!" he roared. Timothy's eyes were red with grief, and the veins stood out across his forehead. He reached for my fading form, but his fingers closed on nothing but air. I saw his lips trembling. The man who had never once lost his composure on the battlefield was now sobbing uncontrollably. "I was wrong, Ana… I'm sorry…"Timothy dropped to his knees and crawled after me. His hands clawed at empty air, trying to hold on to the last trace of me. My conscious
