Chapter 1

Anastasia's POV

It was the day the victorious army returned home. I stood atop the city wall, looking down at the crowds that packed the main street, and waited for that familiar figure.

My maid, Edna Fisher, could barely contain her excitement. "Mrs. Grayson, I can see the banners! It's the general!"

I quickly focused on the procession. At the very front rode my husband, Timothy Grayson. His expression was as stern and unreadable as ever.

Then, my gaze fell lower. He was cradling a woman in a white dress in his arms.

I recognized her instantly. It was Sarah Tucker.

My fingers clenched instinctively, and I pressed a hand to my chest. The pain was so sharp that I felt a chill seep through my entire body.

Below, people were already whispering. "Who's that young woman? Why is she riding with General Grayson?"

"I heard she's Ms. Tucker. She stayed with the army and treated the soldiers' wounds. The general's taken quite a liking to her."

Edna's face turned pale with anger when she heard that. "Mrs. Grayson! How could he do this to you? You managed the entire household while he was away, and he—"

Before she could finish, Timothy swung down from his horse and carefully lifted Sarah from the saddle.

I slowly turned away.

With my back to the roaring crowd, I walked down, one step at a time. It felt as though every ounce of strength had been drained from my body.

Not long after I returned home, the door to my room swung open.

Timothy stepped inside, still wearing his silver armor. His sharp features hadn't changed a bit. Yet, the first thing he said was, "Ana, I know what you saw."

I remained silent.

He sighed, his voice low as he went on, "Sarah said she didn't know how to break it to you and figured the only way was to let you see for yourself.

"She's innocent, Ana. She doesn't understand how complicated these things are. Don't blame her."

A bitter taste filled my mouth. Would an innocent woman really choose to hurt another woman this deeply?

Timothy's voice softened, and he said, "Ana, you've stayed home all this time, taking care of everything while bearing my pain. I know it hasn't been easy.

"But Sarah stayed with the army. She prepared medicine for the wounded, mended the soldiers' clothes, and kept their spirits up. I can't ignore everything she's done."

I looked up at him. I used to think beneath all his ambition, there was still a place for me. As it turned out, I'd only been fooling myself.

"What is it you want?" I asked.

Timothy paused, then replied gently, "I want to marry Sarah and bring her into this household as your equal, with neither of you above the other."

The words hit me like a punch to the gut.

Suddenly, I remembered our wedding night. He'd lifted my veil, his eyes brimming with tenderness as he looked at me.

Back then, he'd been frail and constantly sick, yet he'd been so full of life.

Timothy had taken my hand, gotten down on his knees before me, and sworn, "I will have only one wife for the rest of my life. My heart will never belong to another. If I ever break this vow, may I rot in hell."

By morning, the candles had burned down to nothing.

It had only been three years.

Just then, I let out a quiet laugh. I wasn't sure whether I was laughing at him or at myself.

"If you want to marry her, you'll have to do it over my dead body," I said.

Timothy furrowed his brow, and the warmth vanished from his eyes. "Ana, why would you say something like that just because you're angry?"

A faint smile tugged at my lips. I hadn't said it out of anger.

For the first time in years, I heard the system speak again. "Your despair has reached the required threshold. Upon your death, you may return to the real world."

Just because Sarah had tagged along with the army, Timothy acted like she'd done something heroic.

But he had forgotten something. Every battle he won, every wound that should have been his to bear, I endured instead.

The dull ache in my chest spread until I could barely breathe.

The pain went both ways. For three years, every headache, fever, and minor ache I'd suffered had barely registered with Timothy. He never gave them a second thought.

But this time, the pain was different.

Timothy pressed a hand to his chest before he could stop himself.

"Ana, are you in pain?" he asked with a frown.

He reached out and gently pulled me into his arms. "Don't be upset. Once Sarah joins the family, nothing will change. I'll treat you just as I always have, okay?"

His words carved another wound in my heart, but I blinked back the tears.

Then, I bit down hard on my tongue.

Third-Person POVTimothy's lips parted as he tried to call Anastasia's name. But something seemed lodged in his throat, and not a sound came out. He glanced down at himself, only to find that he was covered in blood. His armor was riddled with holes where arrows had punched through. Blood seeped from every opening, coating his hands in red.In a place so clean and bright, Timothy looked completely out of place. Even so, he kept walking toward her. With every step, he left another bloody footprint on the floor. Anastasia, too, saw Timothy. Her gaze drifted from the acceptance letter to the man who had suddenly appeared at the far end of the hallway. She frowned slightly, as if she were trying to place him. Then, her expression relaxed. Her eyes held nothing at all."Ana."At last, Timothy found his voice. However, it was hoarse and nothing like the voice of the young man Anastasia had once known. "It's you," he said. Anastasia calmly folded the acceptance letter and

His hands were trembling. They all knew the truth. His body was giving out. Everyone had tried to talk him out of it, but he refused to listen. Timothy went anyway. Standing atop the city walls, he looked down at the dark mass of enemy troops below. Suddenly, his thoughts drifted back to the first day he'd gone to war. Anastasia had stood in the doorway to see him off. Her lips were pressed into a thin line, and her eyes were red-rimmed. Even then, she refused to cry. She tightened the clasp of Timothy's cloak over and over, her cold fingertips brushing his neck."Come home soon," she said. But now, Timothy had nothing left. So, when the arrows came raining down, he didn't move. The first one punched through his sho

Anastasia's POVSure enough, when I woke up on the morning of the fourth day, the crushing weight on my chest was finally gone. I sat up in bed and stretched, feeling lighter than I had in the past few days. At that moment, a notification popped up on my phone. It was from the grad school exam group chat. The text read, "The exam results are out! Go check your scores!"I opened the results page and entered my applicant ID. The page loaded, and two seconds later, a single line of text appeared. I stared at it for what felt like forever. Erica leaned over from her bed. She took one look at the screen and let out a shriek. "Oh shit! Ana, you got in! You got into your dream school!"She was even more excited than I was. Right then and there, she posted about it on social media. I looked at the acceptance notice on my screen, and a smile slowly spread across my face. There was no bitterness, no regret, and not once did I find myself wishing he were there. There was nothing at

Third-Person POV Sarah's eyes flew wide, and the color drained from her face. "General, you can't do this to me! You promised you'd protect me for the rest of my life! You promised!" she screamed. But Timothy didn't so much as glance at her. He turned away, walked back to the pool of blood, and gathered up Anastasia's bloodstained dress, clutching it to his chest.Meanwhile, Sarah's desperate cries faded into the distance as the guards dragged her out of the tent. Silence settled over the tent. Timothy was the only one left. Slowly, he crouched down and buried his face in the bloodstained fabric. It still carried Anastasia's scent, and a faint trace of soap lingered beneath the metallic scent of blood. At some point, rain began to fall outside, pattering against the canvas overhead. Third-Person POVTimothy walked toward Sarah, each step landing in Anastasia's blood and carving deeper into his chest. "You told me you were innocent," he began. "That you didn't understand how complicated these things were."He crouched in front of Sarah, grabbed her chin, and forced her to meet his eyes. "You were the one who talked me into sending her to the south gate. "You said she was too gentle to make any difference, that she was the perfect person to boost the troops' morale."Sarah's lips trembled, and tears pooled in her eyes. "I-I was just—""Just what?"Timothy's voice dropped so low that it sent a chill down her spine. He went on, "You wore her mother's pearl bracelet and flaunted it in front of her. You said you liked it, so I let you have it. "You said she frightened you, so I made her apologize. You claimed the barbarians might have violated her, and I forced that tonic down her throat."A bitter laugh escaped him, edged with despair. It was as if he'd f

Timothy seemed to sense something, and he looked down abruptly. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on my hands as they slowly turned transparent. "N-no!"He tightened his arms around me desperately, trying to hold me against his chest. But my body slipped through his fingers like sand. The tighter he held on, the faster I disappeared. "Ana! Don't go! Come back!" he roared. Timothy's eyes were red with grief, and the veins stood out across his forehead. He reached for my fading form, but his fingers closed on nothing but air. I saw his lips trembling. The man who had never once lost his composure on the battlefield was now sobbing uncontrollably. "I was wrong, Ana… I'm sorry…"Timothy dropped to his knees and crawled after me. His hands clawed at empty air, trying to hold on to the last trace of me. My conscious
