Chapter 1

The day I found out Brie Kerry was pregnant was our seventh wedding anniversary.

I'd left work early to surprise her, planning to set everything up before she got home. But while I was hiding her gift in the cabinet, I found a prenatal test report tucked inside with her name on it.

The words "12+ weeks pregnant" burned into my eyes like a hot iron.

How could this be?

Seven years ago, when we got married, Brie had cried and said she was afraid of the pain of childbirth, and more afraid of how hard it would be to raise a child.

"Can't it just be the two of us, for the rest of our lives?" she'd asked.

It broke my heart to see her like that, so I booked a vasectomy the very next day.

The doctor said the odds of conception afterward were next to zero.

So there was no way Brie could be pregnant.

Just then, I heard a key turning in the front door.

I looked up. It was Brie, the woman I'd lived with for seven years, and loved for twenty.

She looked at me, her smile sweet as ever.

"Happy anniversary, honey!"

She threw herself into my arms, her hair brushing against my chin.

I looked into her eyes, so full of love, and felt myself go a little numb.

Five years earlier, when a truck had come barreling toward me, Brie had thrown herself in front of it on pure instinct.

She'd needed more than twenty stitches that day. She'd nearly died.

But when she woke up, she hadn't even seemed to notice the pain, too busy comforting me instead.

"See, I'm perfectly fine. Keep crying like that, and you'll make me mad," she'd said.

Later, she'd traced the scar on her body and joked about it.

"Look, this is my medal of honor. Proof that I love you."

Now, that same love still shone just as real in her eyes, and it made everything inside me feel like it had been dropped in ice water.

My throat tightened. I looked down at her stomach.

A life was growing in there. A life that shared no blood with me at all.

It felt like a fist had closed around my heart and was squeezing. I could barely breathe.

"What are you thinking about?"

Brie gave my arm a shake.

I took a deep breath and set the prenatal test report down gently on the coffee table.

The moment she saw what it said, almost instantly, the smile froze on her face.

She stared down at the report, her expression shifting completely, as if the gentle, doting woman from a second ago had never existed.

"You went through my things?"

"I found it in the bedroom," I said, my voice hoarse. "Brie, what is this? Aren't you going to explain?"

"Explain what?"

She crossed her arms and took a step back, putting distance between us.

"So now going through my private things gives you the right to interrogate me?"

"I had a vasectomy seven years ago!" I finally couldn't hold back, my voice rising, my chest heaving. "Whose child is this?"

She frowned, clearly annoyed.

"Why are you yelling? Can't a vasectomy fail and lead to an accidental pregnancy?"

"A vasectomy that somehow got you pregnant?"

I stared straight into her eyes. "Look at me, Brie."

She looked away instead.

"I don't feel like talking about this."

Just then, her phone rang.

Charles Newman's name lit up across the screen.

My heart sank instantly.

"Hello?"

The moment Brie answered, her voice turned soft. But as she listened to whatever was being said on the other end, a barely noticeable edge of worry crept into her tone.

"What's wrong? Are you not feeling well? ... I'll come right now. Just hold on."

She hung up, grabbed her bag off the couch, and headed for the door without so much as glancing at me.

"Brie!" I called after her.

Her steps faltered. When she turned back, her face was nothing but pure annoyance.

"Stop bothering me."

I didn't have time to think it through. I stepped forward to see if it really was her.The moment I saw Brie, she froze too, clearly caught off guard. Then panic swept across her face. "Martin? You... what are you doing here..."I just stood there looking at her. Before I could even speak, Charles cut in first."Martin, don't blame Brie. I was the one who convinced her to keep the baby."And another thing, can you stop being so selfish? Brie just wants a child of her own."If you can't give her that, you don't get to blame her for it."I turned a cold look on Charles.Something about my expression frightened him enough that he shut up instantly.Brie, meanwhile, stepped in front of Charles to shield him. "If you're angry, take it out on me. Leave him out of it."I found I couldn't get a single word out. My whole body was shaking.Sensing something was wrong, Brie reached for my hand, but I yanked it away."What are you doing? Are you out of your mind?! What if you hurt Brie

Tears of relief blurred out every ounce of hurt I'd been carrying. After that, things between Brie and me went back to how they used to be.But something about Brie felt off, something I couldn't quite put my finger on.She started spending less and less time at home.I was still turning it over in my head when her call interrupted my thoughts."Martin, there's a big project at the company, and I have to go handle it in person. I might not be able to come home for a while. You need to take good care of yourself while I'm gone, okay?""I know, Brie. Don't work yourself too hard either, okay? Take care of yourself. When you get back, I'll have a surprise for you."Brie kept pressing me about what the surprise was, but I held my tongue. I wanted to wait until she was home to tell her in person. After we'd made up, I went straight to the hospital. The doctors told me my odds of a successful reversal were high.It wouldn't be long before I'd fully recovered, and once I had, I coul

The next day, Brie took me to the place where I'd once sat out an entire night. The moment I stepped inside, a familiar scent hit me at once.I looked around, taking in every corner of the house. So this was her second home.Charles was waiting for me upstairs, and Brie didn't come with me, choosing instead to sit and wait in the living room downstairs.I pushed open the study door and found Charles standing by the window. When he saw me, he pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up his nose, looking perfectly at ease."Martin. It's been a while."I didn't respond. I just walked in and sat down on my own.He didn't seem rattled either. He smiled. "Did you come to see me about something today?"I looked at him. "Do you actually love Brie?"Charles raised an eyebrow. "Of course I do. I'll be honest with you. I've liked Brie since the very first time I saw her."That day we were out meeting a client, I covered for her when the drinks came around, and she covered for me too, so the two

Back when I was very young, my parents had gone off to work in another city and died in a car accident, leaving me behind. If the village elder hadn't stepped in, my uncle would never have agreed to take me in at all.So when I met Brie, it was the first time I ever knew what it felt like to be loved, the first time I understood just how happy loving someone could make a person. But now, I'd been abandoned all over again."I divorced her."My calm tone left them too stunned to react at first. It wasn't until Aunt Denise finally found her voice that she let out a shout. "What? You divorced Brie?"I finished eating, got up, and went back to my room, ignoring the two of them stamping their feet in a panic behind me.I'd assumed they'd come barge into my room and make a scene, but by dinnertime, they simply came to call me down as if nothing had happened. While I was still puzzled by that, I suddenly spotted Brie sitting at the dinner table.I froze for a moment, and it wasn't un

My words had come out sharper than I meant them to, and Brie clearly hadn't expected me to sound like a completely different person."All because of the baby?" she asked."All because of the baby," I replied.I kept it simple. I wasn't interested in putting on some heartfelt performance."Come back. Let's talk this through."I let out a small sigh, almost amused. "Talk it through? We've already talked about this more times than I can count, and your answer has never once changed. What would be the point of talking about it again?"There was silence on the other end.In the end, I still couldn't quite bring myself to be cruel about it. "Brie, since you've chosen the baby, I respect your decision. I just can't accept it. So the best ending for us is to go our separate ways.""And if I say no?" There was an unshakable determination in Brie's voice."I've done everything I could. Goodbye, Brie. I hope you're happy."With that, I hung up.I looked up at the deep blue sky, the

Back home, I spent the whole day in a fog, staring at nothing.I sat in the bedroom and pondered. I'd gone back and forth on it a few times, but I'd finally made up my mind.Once I had made up my mind, I suddenly felt hungry.I got up and went to the kitchen to fry some eggs. The eggs sizzled in the pan, and the smell drifted through the apartment. Before I knew it, I'd zoned out again, staring at the eggs, until Brie's voice cut through the silence."That smells so good. Are you frying eggs?"I turned, a little startled, to find Brie standing in the doorway."I happen to be hungry too."I almost couldn't believe it. For a second, I thought I was seeing things. Then Brie wrapped her arms around me."I'm sorry. I haven't been around much lately."I hugged her back. "It's fine.""Can you make me your cheese omelet again? I've been craving it."Brie's eyes crinkled the way they had the very first time we met."Sure."I watched her walk away, but my heart kept stinging, ove
