Chapter 4

작가: Forest Isle
"Who said you could go through my things?" Jenson snatched the notebook back. Visible anger surfaced on his face for the first time.

I set the evaluation form right in front of him. "So when you proposed to me, it was never about love."

"Marriage requires rational choices."

"If Aleena got a perfect score, why didn't you choose her?" I asked.

His fingers paused for a fraction of a second. "She isn't suitable for my family."

I understood immediately.

Aleena came from an ordinary background, and her father was heavily in debt, meaning she couldn't offer any help to the Clarke family.

On the other hand, my father's remaining connections and my 50% stake in the company were just enough to cover that missing one point.

"What about me then? Was I just suitable?"

Jenson fell silent for a moment before arriving at his conclusion on my behalf. "Obviously."

The aching pain in my abdomen grew sharper.

I gripped the edge of the desk, barely holding myself upright. "You spent three years pursuing me, waited for me outside the translation academy, and stayed by my mom's side during her final treatments. Was all of that just part of your evaluation, too?"

"Getting to know a potential spouse is a necessary part of the process," Jenson replied.

"What about when you told me I didn't need a perfect score?"

"That was to lower your guard."

"On the day you proposed, you said I was the only choice you'd ever make."

He frowned. "Eve, people say what's appropriate for the occasion. Why dissect every single word?"

I nodded slowly. It turned out that every phrase I held dear was nothing more than a standardized answer he used to complete his process.

Just then, his phone rang. It was Aleena, sobbing over the line. "Jenson, people online are claiming I stole the manuscript. The publishing house wants to cancel the launch. Can you come over?"

Jenson grabbed his jacket.

I stepped in front of the door to block his way. "I'm the one who contacted the publisher."

"Drop the claim," he ordered.

"Not a chance."

"Aleena already promised to keep your mom's name on it. What more do you want?"

I replied, "She altered the manuscript and deleted the note my mom left specifically for me."

"That single line doesn't affect the overall content."

With that, he brushed past me.

I reached out and caught his sleeve. "Jenson, what if I need you right now?"

"Stop competing for attention like this."

"I'm not competing."

The pain radiated through my lower belly, making my voice tremble. "I'm only asking you this once. Can you stay today?"

He glanced at my pale face, his gaze lingering for a fraction of a second.

Aleena's cries echoed from the phone once again. "Jenson, reporters are crowding outside. I'm really scared."

Jenson pried my hand off his sleeve. "Aleena's launch event directly affects the company's reputation. Go rest in your room. I'll be back as soon as I handle this."

Before the door closed, he left me with one final sentence. "Have the authorization form signed by the time I get back. And I'm giving you a 60 for your performance today."

I listened to the car engine fade into the distance and slowly sank to the floor.

Blood seeped from beneath my skirt, dripping onto the floor.

I pulled out my phone and dialed emergency services.

On the way to the hospital, the nurse asked where my family was.

I stared at Jenson's contact number but never hit call. "I don't have family."

The baby couldn't be saved.

The doctor handed me a small box containing a blood-stained lab result and a blurry ultrasound image. "The fetus was already eight weeks along. Didn't your husband know?"

I shook my head.

I tucked the box into my bag and handled the discharge procedures entirely on my own.

As I walked out of the hospital, Aleena sent me a video of the launch event filmed by the publisher.

Jenson stood in front of Aleena, promising reporters that the company would take full responsibility for all disputes.

Someone asked him who mattered more—me or Aleena.

He answered calmly, "Eve is my wife, so she understands the bigger picture. Aleena is the project lead, and I won't let her suffer any unfair treatment."

Below the video, a message from Aleena popped up. "Want to guess if he's coming home to stay with you tonight? Eve, Mrs. Clarke is just a role. I'm the exception."

I didn't reply.

Once back home, I signed two documents.

The first was the revocation of his voting proxy for my shares. The second was a divorce agreement.

I packed the wedding ring, the ultrasound picture, and that scoring notebook into a single box, then laid the silver fountain pen right on top.

On the back of the premarital evaluation form, I wrote a single line. "The baby was never born, so there's no need for your score."

At 3:00 am, I rolled my suitcase out the door.

A message from Jenson arrived. "The launch event is over. The authorization form is in the study. I expect your signature on it tomorrow morning."

He still assumed I would be waiting at home, just like I always had.

I didn't block him. I simply sent back two final words. "It's signed."

Then, I turned off my phone and handed my boarding pass for Norlandia to the airport staff.

At the same time, my lawyer, Dylan Sutton, delivered a copy of the share revocation document bearing my signature to the company's board of directors.

On the launch day of the Ardovia regional branch, I led the first round of candidate interviews. After finishing her practice interpretation, a young lady asked nervously, "Ms. Hudson, what score did I get?"I closed my notebook. "Why must there be a score?""I'm just afraid I'm not good enough.""You conveyed the original meaning accurately and handled unexpected hiccups well. Whatever fell short, you can just go back and practice," I replied. She still looked a bit anxious. "So… am I hired?"I handed her a staff badge. "Welcome aboard."The young lady froze for a few seconds before taking it with a wide smile.Reed stood by the doorway, holding two bags of breakfast. "Ms. Hudson, you skipped breakfast. You failed your assessment.""How many points are deducted?""Zero." He pressed a warm cup of soy milk into my hand. "Just remember next time."I chuckled softly and took a bite of my croissant.Life didn't fall apart after I left. I simply picked up my career again and sta

The emergency meeting at Halverton Group dragged on for six hours. By the time Jenson walked out of the conference room, he was no longer the CEO.The board concluded that he had abused his authority for years, favored his own people, and caused losses across multiple projects. On top of that, the confidential company files Aleena leaked left the company facing astronomical damage claims. His father slammed the resignation letter right into his chest. "You dragged the entire company down for a woman! Are you satisfied now?"Jenson picked the letter up from the floor. "I'm sorry."That night, he came to see me to sign the final share restructuring agreement.I scanned through the terms. "You're giving up 10% of your personal shares?""To compensate the overseas operations team who were fired," Jenson replied."And the board agreed?""They had no reason to refuse."I signed my name and passed the document back to him.Jenson remained seated, making no move to leave. News of Aleena's suspension spread through Halverton Group like wildfire. She barged into the clarification press conference unannounced."Eve sent every single email herself!" She held up a thick stack of printed materials. "She was planning to leave Mr. Clarke all along, so she intentionally pinned the blame on me!"Reporters shoved microphones in my face. "Ms. Hudson, what evidence do you have?"I turned on the projector and said, "The IP address used to log in and send that first email traces back directly to the CEO's office at Halverton Group."The screen displayed the server login location for the office.Aleena's expression froze. "Anyone can walk into that office!""Which is why I filed for handwriting and official seal authenticity forensic tests."I flipped to the next slide. "The personal seal used at the bottom of that email had a faint scratch along its outer edge. That defect only appeared on Jenson's personal seal during Aleena's third month at the company."Su

Six months later, I wrapped up an international negotiation in Norlandia.Reed Bolton handed me a thermal flask. "The doctor told you to cut back on coffee.""I only had one cup today," I replied."You said the exact same thing last week."I took the flask with a light chuckle. "Don't be so controlling, Mr. Bolton.""I'm not. I'm just reminding you." He passed me the meeting minutes. "No one has the right to score your judgment, myself included."I looked down at the documents. After returning to work, I still found myself reflexively tweaking every pause in my translations.I had asked Reed how I did after my first conference back. He simply said, "Getting it done is the answer."Only then did I slowly come to realize that not everyone stood around holding a measuring tape, waiting for me to slip up.Reed's assistant pushed the door open. "Ms. Hudson, the delegation from Halverton Group has arrived."I looked up.Jenson stood outside the doorway, looking noticeably thinner

Jenson called my number for seven days straight without getting through. On the eighth day, he finally reached my mentor, Lucy. "Where is she?""In what capacity are you asking?" Lucy asked coldly in response."I'm her husband.""The divorce papers were already delivered to you.""I didn't sign them," Jenson said."That's your problem."Jenson suppressed the anger in his tone. "She just lost the baby and needs to be taken care of. I'm bringing her back."Lucy asked. "And where were you when she needed taking care of the most?"The line went dead.He stood outside the translation academy all day long.Years ago, whenever I worked late into the night, he used to wait for me in the exact same spot.Back then, I would run out into the rain, and he would open his umbrella, pressing a warm cup of coffee into my hands. He used to say, "You come before everything else."Now, that same umbrella was soaked in rain, but no one ran toward him anymore. That night, Aleena blocked his

When Jenson returned home, the first thing he saw was the document sitting on the desk.Without turning on the lights, he flipped straight to the final page. "Compliant after all," he muttered. However, his hands froze the moment he read the title. It wasn't the authorization form. It was a divorce agreement.Half of the study was completely empty. My books, clothes, and documents were all gone.Jenson pulled out his phone to call me, but only the automated operator answered.Aleena stepped into the room behind him, whispering, "Eve's probably just trying to scare you. Go comfort her, and she'll come around.""She won't leave," Jenson said, sounding like he was trying to convince himself. "She has no job and no income of her own. Where could she possibly go?"He pushed open the bedroom door and saw the box resting on the nightstand. The wedding ring sat right on top. Beneath it lay the ultrasound photo.Jenson held the photograph tightly, remaining silent for a long time."Wh
