Chapter 3

작가: Forest Isle
When I confronted him about it, Jenson confessed without hesitation. "I had someone send the email."

I threw the printed email onto his desk. "What gives you the right to turn down a job for me?"

"We just got married back then. If you flew to a dozen countries every month, how could you possibly run a household?"

I retorted, "You promised that if I resigned, you'd spend more time with me."

He looked up. "And I gave you the best life possible."

"Freezing my cards and taking away my car keys counts as the best life?"

"That's a punishment, not your life," he said as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "As long as you behave, those privileges will be restored immediately."

As I stared at him, my chest felt tightly constricted.

It turned out that what I thought was care was merely a reward he handed out for high achievers. The moment I stopped cooperating, he could take it all back whenever he wanted.

Aleena pushed the door open. The moment she saw us arguing, tears welled up in her eyes. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have used Eve's things."

She unclipped her work badge and pulled out the project files. "I won't serve as the project lead anymore. I don't want you two to fight because of me."

Jenson shoved the files back into her arms. "No one is taking your position away."

He turned to look at me. "Don't bring your personal drama into the office."

Without another word, I turned and walked out.

That afternoon, I received a call from my late mother's publishing house.

"Ms. Hudson, the launch event for your mother's posthumous manuscript was moved up. Why aren't you here yet?"

When I rushed to the venue, Aleena's name was already glowing on the big screen.

"The Unbounded Voice" was the last interpretation memoir Mom completed while she was gravely ill.

Before she passed away, she handed the manuscript to me, telling me to publish it only when I stood on the translation stage once again.

Yet now, Aleena stood on stage holding Mom's manuscript, claiming it was an industry achievement compiled by her team.

Jenson sat in the front row with a calm expression.

I rushed onto the stage and snatched the microphone. "My mother left this manuscript behind! Every page has her handwritten notes! What right do you have to put your name on it?"

Murmurs immediately broke out in the audience.

Jenson stood up and reached over to take the microphone away. "Eve's emotional state has been unstable recently. I will take responsibility for today's disruption."

He then signaled for security to come up.

I held the manuscript tightly to my chest. "Jenson, this belongs to my mom."

"The publisher already obtained authorization."

"Authorized by whom?"

He didn't answer.

Aleena explained softly, "Jenson said you two are married, so he could decide on your behalf. Eve, I'm just the editor. I won't steal your mother's credit."

I flipped to the title page.

Mom's name was still there. Mine, however, had been cut out.

Even the line she wrote to me—"May Eve always believe in her own voice"—had been completely blacked out with ink.

I raised my hand and slapped Aleena across the face.

Chaos erupted instantly.

Jenson grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from Aleena. "Have you had enough?"

I held the manuscript right in front of his eyes. "My mom left this to me!"

"Leaving the manuscript to collect dust at home is useless. Giving it to Aleena lets more people see it. That's what gives it true meaning," Jenson said.

My eyes stung with heat. "If the person standing here today were your mother, would you say the same thing?"

Jenson's expression darkened. "Don't compare my mother to the dead."

He pulled the manuscript from my grip.

The sound of paper tearing was faint. The title page ripped right down the middle, leaving only half of Mom's signature.

A sudden sharp pain flared up in my lower abdomen.

I grabbed the corner of a table, cold sweat pouring down my back.

Aleena covered her face, whispering, "Eve doesn't look so good. Maybe we should pause the launch event."

Jenson glanced at me. "She always ruins things at critical moments. Security, take her home."

As I was escorted out of the venue, applause broke out behind me once again.

Back home, while searching the study for the manuscript's authorization document, I uncovered a black notebook.

Every page was filled with Jenson's handwriting.

"Comprehensive Evaluation of Prospective Partners.

"Family background: 85.

"Career capability: 95.

"Emotional stability: 76.

"Fertility risk: 68."

On the very last row was my name.

"Eve Hudson: Overall score 89. Suitable candidate for a wife."

Right above my name sat a single line.

"Aleena Walton: Perfect score. Excluded from marital evaluation."

Footsteps sounded outside the door.

As I closed the notebook, a premarital evaluation form slid out from between the pages. It was dated the day before Jenson proposed to me.

On the launch day of the Ardovia regional branch, I led the first round of candidate interviews. After finishing her practice interpretation, a young lady asked nervously, "Ms. Hudson, what score did I get?"I closed my notebook. "Why must there be a score?""I'm just afraid I'm not good enough.""You conveyed the original meaning accurately and handled unexpected hiccups well. Whatever fell short, you can just go back and practice," I replied. She still looked a bit anxious. "So… am I hired?"I handed her a staff badge. "Welcome aboard."The young lady froze for a few seconds before taking it with a wide smile.Reed stood by the doorway, holding two bags of breakfast. "Ms. Hudson, you skipped breakfast. You failed your assessment.""How many points are deducted?""Zero." He pressed a warm cup of soy milk into my hand. "Just remember next time."I chuckled softly and took a bite of my croissant.Life didn't fall apart after I left. I simply picked up my career again and sta

The emergency meeting at Halverton Group dragged on for six hours. By the time Jenson walked out of the conference room, he was no longer the CEO.The board concluded that he had abused his authority for years, favored his own people, and caused losses across multiple projects. On top of that, the confidential company files Aleena leaked left the company facing astronomical damage claims. His father slammed the resignation letter right into his chest. "You dragged the entire company down for a woman! Are you satisfied now?"Jenson picked the letter up from the floor. "I'm sorry."That night, he came to see me to sign the final share restructuring agreement.I scanned through the terms. "You're giving up 10% of your personal shares?""To compensate the overseas operations team who were fired," Jenson replied."And the board agreed?""They had no reason to refuse."I signed my name and passed the document back to him.Jenson remained seated, making no move to leave. News of Aleena's suspension spread through Halverton Group like wildfire. She barged into the clarification press conference unannounced."Eve sent every single email herself!" She held up a thick stack of printed materials. "She was planning to leave Mr. Clarke all along, so she intentionally pinned the blame on me!"Reporters shoved microphones in my face. "Ms. Hudson, what evidence do you have?"I turned on the projector and said, "The IP address used to log in and send that first email traces back directly to the CEO's office at Halverton Group."The screen displayed the server login location for the office.Aleena's expression froze. "Anyone can walk into that office!""Which is why I filed for handwriting and official seal authenticity forensic tests."I flipped to the next slide. "The personal seal used at the bottom of that email had a faint scratch along its outer edge. That defect only appeared on Jenson's personal seal during Aleena's third month at the company."Su

Six months later, I wrapped up an international negotiation in Norlandia.Reed Bolton handed me a thermal flask. "The doctor told you to cut back on coffee.""I only had one cup today," I replied."You said the exact same thing last week."I took the flask with a light chuckle. "Don't be so controlling, Mr. Bolton.""I'm not. I'm just reminding you." He passed me the meeting minutes. "No one has the right to score your judgment, myself included."I looked down at the documents. After returning to work, I still found myself reflexively tweaking every pause in my translations.I had asked Reed how I did after my first conference back. He simply said, "Getting it done is the answer."Only then did I slowly come to realize that not everyone stood around holding a measuring tape, waiting for me to slip up.Reed's assistant pushed the door open. "Ms. Hudson, the delegation from Halverton Group has arrived."I looked up.Jenson stood outside the doorway, looking noticeably thinner

Jenson called my number for seven days straight without getting through. On the eighth day, he finally reached my mentor, Lucy. "Where is she?""In what capacity are you asking?" Lucy asked coldly in response."I'm her husband.""The divorce papers were already delivered to you.""I didn't sign them," Jenson said."That's your problem."Jenson suppressed the anger in his tone. "She just lost the baby and needs to be taken care of. I'm bringing her back."Lucy asked. "And where were you when she needed taking care of the most?"The line went dead.He stood outside the translation academy all day long.Years ago, whenever I worked late into the night, he used to wait for me in the exact same spot.Back then, I would run out into the rain, and he would open his umbrella, pressing a warm cup of coffee into my hands. He used to say, "You come before everything else."Now, that same umbrella was soaked in rain, but no one ran toward him anymore. That night, Aleena blocked his

When Jenson returned home, the first thing he saw was the document sitting on the desk.Without turning on the lights, he flipped straight to the final page. "Compliant after all," he muttered. However, his hands froze the moment he read the title. It wasn't the authorization form. It was a divorce agreement.Half of the study was completely empty. My books, clothes, and documents were all gone.Jenson pulled out his phone to call me, but only the automated operator answered.Aleena stepped into the room behind him, whispering, "Eve's probably just trying to scare you. Go comfort her, and she'll come around.""She won't leave," Jenson said, sounding like he was trying to convince himself. "She has no job and no income of her own. Where could she possibly go?"He pushed open the bedroom door and saw the box resting on the nightstand. The wedding ring sat right on top. Beneath it lay the ultrasound photo.Jenson held the photograph tightly, remaining silent for a long time."Wh
