Chapter 1

Author: Goodtale
"Mommy, I'm so hungry. When I was five, we starved to death together on the side of the road," my newborn daughter, Kayla Green, said. "Mommy, can we just leave Daddy? Please?"

My eyes turned cold. Christian Green had probably forgotten who had given him the life he had today.

I was the only daughter of the Stone family. Back then, I was the one who convinced my family to invest in him and helped him build his business from the ground up.

Without me, Christian would still be renting a tiny partitioned room in one of the city's rundown apartments.

I looked at Kayla in my arms and held her even tighter. "It's okay, sweetheart. In this lifetime, no one is ever going to hurt us again."

The hospital room fell silent. Kayla's voice drifted into my mind in scattered fragments, speaking whatever crossed her mind.

"Mommy, Daddy isn't at the hospital now because he went to pick up that lady. Her name is Summer Knightley. He always picks her up, even when it rains or snows. But he's never picked you up, Mommy.

"Three days later, he transfers the first batch of money—70 thousand dollars. A week later, that lady visits you in the hospital. She holds me in her arms and says, 'What an adorable baby. She looks more like her father.'

"You smile and pour her a glass of water. She lowers her head to take a sip, smiling the whole time. You didn't know a thing then.

"A month later, Daddy hands you a stack of papers. You ask him what they are. He says, 'Just sign them.' That lady sits beside him, peeling an apple. She smiles and tells you, 'Just sign it, Marilyn. Christian would never hurt you, would he?'

"You take the apple from her, bite into it, and sign your name. A year later, the court hands down its judgment. The apartment and car go to him. Outside the courthouse, they make a phone call.

"He laughs and says, 'It's done.' She laughs, too, and says. 'I told you she'd be easy to fool.' After that, he keeps sending you to ask Grandpa for money time after time. Every time, he uses the same excuse.

"That lady sits beside Grandpa during dinner, serving him food with a smile. She tells him, 'Don't worry, Mr. Stone. I've invested in this project, too. Grandpa believes her.

"Within six months, he gives them money three times—a million dollars in total. Every penny goes into Nocturne Media. That lady is listed as the legal representative, while Daddy is the one pulling the strings.

"The day the company goes bankrupt, Daddy asks you for a divorce. You tell him I'm still too young. He looks you straight in the eye and says, 'You gave birth to that kid. What's she got to do with me?'

"You take me with you when we move into a first-floor apartment unit. It's only 130 square feet—no windows, just mold covering the walls. I cough every night.

"You leave every morning looking for work. Every night, you come home with red, puffy eyes. The only thing on your CV is the years you spent working for Daddy.

"Grandpa passes away in a nursing home, not in a hospital. You can't afford the hospital bills. Mr. Hudson visits him every week. The last time he sees him, Grandpa grabs his hand and calls your name.

"Mistaking Mr. Hudson for you, he smiles. The next day, he's gone. You carry me onto an overpass. The wind is so strong, while cars race beneath us. You stand there for a long, long time.

"I tell you, 'Mommy, I'm cold.' You lower your head and look at me. By then, there's nothing left in your eyes."

I closed my eyes and carved every single word into my memory.

Just then, Alistair Hudson's chat window lit up with three new messages.

The first read, "Christian owns three companies. Nocturne Media was registered last June. The legal representative is Summer Knightley. Paid-up capital is zero."

The second read, "Summer, Christian's college classmate, returned to the country last May and is currently serving as his personal assistant."

The third read, "Christian arrived at the airport an hour ago. He picked Summer up—the woman in this photo."

I turned my phone over, leaving the screen facedown. My hand was trembling.

Outside the window, the shadow of the apple tree fell across the stove.Kayla was asleep in her stroller in the courtyard. The wind pushed against the screen door again and again. The refrigerator hummed softly.I set my bowl down and leaned against the kitchen doorframe, watching Dad lift the remaining ribs from the pot, one piece at a time. His hands were too calloused to my liking. Those calluses had grown from the lathe he worked on when he was 16. Later, that lathe became a factory, which became 30 years of the Stone family's business. The money those businesses created was then moved from one man's hands into another man's… all because of me."Dad.""What is it, darling?""I'm sorry."Dad's hands didn't stop. He placed the biggest rib into my bowl. "What are you sorry for?""The money. Grandpa's money, your money—I gave all of it to him."Dad put the ladle down and turned around. He wasn't a tall man, but when he looked at someone, his eyes were like two nails, driving

That afternoon, I sat alone beneath the apple tree. My phone lit up with a push notification from Twitter."Christian Green's Assistant, Summer Knightley, Exposed for Years of Interference in Marriage. Multiple Brands Announce Contract Terminations."A screenshot was attached. Summer's old post had been dug up, one from two years ago."Waiting for someone to get divorced."Her profile picture wasn't blurred. The necklace around her neck looked familiar. It was the one Christian had won as a third prize in the annual company raffle years ago.He had told me the third prize wasn't worth much, so he traded it for an oven with a coworker. Then he had laughed and said he would make me baked pork ribs that night. The oven was still in our kitchen, and he had made quite amazing pork ribs with it.Kayla woke up. Her cry came from inside the house, demanding and confident. She was hungry, and there was no room to negotiate.I turned my phone face down and left it on the coffee table. Th

Two weeks later, I went to Nocturne Media's office with Alistair and Taylor. The corporate registration transfer hadn't been completed yet, but legally, this company already belonged to me. When the receptionist and the finance department saw us, their faces went pale. The accountant was a young woman wearing glasses. Her hands kept twisting the hem of her clothes. She brought out every financial record since the company was founded. Alistair went through them page by page. When he reached an expense from last December, he paused."Ms. Stone."It was a transfer of 24 thousand dollars. The purpose was stated as the purchase of office equipment, and the renovation company was the recipient. The note simply read, "Apartment."I understood then. It was the renovation costs for Summer's apartment, paid through Nocturne Media's corporate account.Every penny Nocturne Media had came from the joint account between Christian and me, which meant the apartment Summer lived in was renovated

On the 11th day, the trial began. The gray stone steps outside the courthouse had been polished smooth from years of footsteps. When I carried Kayla up the stairs, Christian was already standing at the entrance. When he saw me, he stepped down one stair toward me, then stopped."Mommy, Daddy has gotten thinner. Is he hungry, too?" Kayla asked, then paused. "Maybe not. He's angry. In our previous life, he wasn't like this when he was angry at us. He was always making phone calls. This time, nobody answers his calls anymore."I carried her past him without looking at him. He didn't say anything either. The hearing lasted nearly four hours. There were too many details to recount. Only a few moments stayed with me.The judge asked Christian, "Is the signature on the supplementary agreement for the notarization of marital property yours?"He answered, "Yes.""Was the agreement made voluntarily, with the intention of including all your premarital personal property as jointly owned ma

"Mr. Green, on your wife's birthday, she called you at 6:00 pm and asked where you were. You told her you were working late at the office. Would you like me to play that recording as well?"The courtroom fell silent for a long moment. The judge denied the other party's request for mediation. Instead, the case would proceed directly to trial the following Friday. When Taylor recounted everything over the phone afterward, he could barely hide the satisfaction in his voice.Kayla suddenly spoke. "That judge was amazing. She stood up for us against Daddy.""Yeah. She stood up for us.""But why?""Because she saw the evidence. She saw Summer's name on the hotel registration, right beneath my birthday.""Was she angry?""Didn't you hear Mr. Walker's voice? The judge was even angrier than I was."From the seventh to the tenth day, too much happened to keep track of.Alistair made 47 phone calls. Every client in the Stone family's business network that also worked with Christian rece

Dad straightened up and sat down on the couch. He picked up the hot honey tea that had gone cold in front of me, carried it into the kitchen, and returned with a freshly made one."You've already done everything that needed to be done.""Yeah.""So, there's no need to dwell on it."He stood and began taking things out of the plastic bags one by one—baby formula, fruits, tea leaves, and a box of shortbread cookies from the same old brand I had loved as a child. The corners of the paper box were worn white. He must've searched through the bottom shelf of some forgotten store to find it."How did you manage to find these?""Your mother used to like them, too. Did you forget?"I didn't. Mom had been gone for almost 20 years. Her army-green wool coat had hung in Dad's wardrobe, right beside his shirts. Every time the seasons changed, he took it out to air it in the sun."Marilyn.""Yeah?""Being a single mother won't be easy. When your mother passed away, you were only this tall,
