Chapter 2

Author: Big Belly
Aaron returned at 6:00 am the next day, but he didn't return alone. Another young woman trailed behind him in a white trench coat, a suitcase at her side that hadn't been checked in.

She was Nancy Greene, Aaron's lab partner back in college—and also the person whom he could never work up the courage to confess to.

Nancy placed a container of warm chicken soup on the bedside table, her eyes looking a little swollen.

"I'd already hopped onto the shuttle bus, but Aaron insisted that I get off," she said. "I heard about what happened to your parents… and I don't know what to say other than I'm sorry, Carmen."

I glanced at Aaron. He held on to Nancy's suitcase, his shoulders still damp with morning dew, and yet an irrepressible sense of relief showed in his eyes.

So, convincing Nancy to stay really made him that happy.

"It's got nothing to do with you," I said, taking the soup container from the table. "Since you're back, you don't have to go through the trouble of leaving again. Don't you guys still have that National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition to prepare for?"

The relaxed look on Aaron's face faded very slightly.

"Don't say things you don't mean, Carmen. "

"I don't have time to beat around the bush with you."

Nancy hurriedly smiled and tried to smooth things over.

"I'm just deferring my exchange program. I won't necessarily stay here forever. Please don't argue with him over me," she said.

I took a bite of the soup. "There's nothing for us to argue about anyway."

Since Nancy's laptop was still locked in her checked luggage, she asked if she could borrow mine to handle the deferral of her exchange program. But before I could even speak, Aaron had already picked mine up from the table and handed it to her.

"I'll just use it for a short while. I'll return it to you a while later."

I didn't fight back.

At about 9:00 am that day, I got a call from the funeral home asking me to go and pick out an urn. Aaron had only just offered to keep me company when Nancy's phone rang about the same time.

As it turned out, their project system had crashed, and since their investor would only be around for two hours, they would most likely lose their eligibility for the competition if they missed this window to meet up with him.

Aaron stood by the hospital bed, clearly hesitating.

"Can we pick out the urn later in the afternoon instead?"

I paused for a moment.

"Sure," I said. "It's not like the dead are in a rush anyway."

Aaron's face turned pale. "I didn't mean it that way, Carmen."

"I know."

I steadied myself on the edge of the bedframe and settled into my wheelchair. Then, I said, "Go ahead and do whatever you need to do if you're busy."

…

The funeral home was cold.

One of the staff members wheeled over a rack of sample catalogues and asked what colors Mom and Dad liked, whether they had any special requests or beliefs, and whether I wanted anything engraved on the bottom of the urn.

I answered every question. When I was finally done selecting the urn, the staff glanced at the empty space behind me and asked, "Didn't your husband come with you?"

"I don't have a husband."

"What about a boyfriend?"

I lowered my head to double-check the spelling of Mom's and Dad's names.

"I don't have one either."

When I finally returned to the hospital that evening, Aaron was already waiting for me inside my ward. A container of my favorite stew sat on the table, but it had long since cooled.

Aaron's face darkened when he saw I was only accompanied by a nurse.

"Why didn't you ask me to come along with you to the funeral home?"

"You were busy."

"I could have made time for you even if I was busy."

I looked at him.

"But you didn't."

He was speechless for a moment. His gaze quickly shifted to the packed suitcase next to my hospital bed. Resting right on top was the acceptance letter for the Wingdor restoration project.

"Are you really going for that?" he asked.

"Yeah."

"With your leg in that condition? You're still going to the desert for restoration work like this?" Have you lost your mind, Carmen Mosley?"

"The doctor said that I'll be able to walk in a month," I replied. "I'll just travel with the team and organize their data and paperwork first. My leg won't get in the way."

Aaron ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He asked, "Are you punishing yourself like this just because I went to the airport yesterday?"

I smiled at him.

"You're not that important to me, Aaron."

That line seemed to have stung him. He fell silent for a long time before picking up the information sheet at the foot of my hospital bed. Then, his expression turned grim the moment he saw the entry for the emergency contact.

"You removed my name?"

"You're not my next of kin."

"Then who is?"

"Nobody."

His phone rang just then. It was Nancy, probably to ask him if the program had been fixed on his end.

Usually, he wouldn't even hesitate for a second to answer a call like that. But this time, he stared at me for a long time before finally tapping on the answer button.

Five years later, I became the resident lead for the mural restoration project.I converted the studio Dad left behind into a Digital Cultural Heritage Conservation Laboratory. Many media outlets and reporters arrived on the day of the grand opening.Someone asked me, "Ms. Mosley! Can you please explain why you've persisted in working with digital heritage and digital legacy?"I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled and answered, "Because human memory is fallible, and machines can be wrong. Hence why accurate evidence matters most."At the end of the grand opening session, my assistant, Kelsey Conway, ran over to me with an iPad."Ms. Mosley! There's some old data that requires your authorization for deletion. It's from a personal account synced to the system from five years ago."I opened the file and saw a familiar name—Aaron Dawson.Over the past few years, I had occasionally heard news about him here and there. He never started another business after what happened the last ti

The six-month project finally came to an end, and I returned to the city. But it wasn't because of Aaron. Rather, it was because the hearing for my parents' case was scheduled there. On the day the trial concluded, Martin was sentenced for multiple counts of financial crimes. But as for the car accident involving my parents, the chain of evidence remained insufficient, and he wasn't able to be prosecuted for intentional assault. The outcome wasn't perfect, but it was enough for me.It was drizzling outside when I stepped out of the courthouse. I saw Aaron standing at the foot of the steps without an umbrella, looking much thinner than I remembered. He saw me, but he didn't come over. Instead, he just nodded and said, "You're back.""Yeah.""How's your leg?""It's better.""Good to know."We didn't have anything to say to each other after that.I found it rather strange. After all, we used to talk nineteen to the dozen from morning to night, and now even a comment on the weath

The wind in Wingdor was big and fierce.During my first month with the project team, I still couldn't stand for long, so I spent my days organizing image files on my laptop in my lap.One of my seniors, Dylan Walker, saw me on crutches and came over to annoy me."Looking at your condition, you're going to crumble even before the walls do when you restore the murals later."I smacked him in the head with my file folder. "Get lost."He doubled over with laughter instead and said, "Seems like you're fine if you can curse at me like that. I guess you're not dying yet."Life gradually became busier for me. Nobody asked me about Aaron, and nobody bothered where I'd suddenly popped up from like a wild daisy, but that was just as well.Three months later, the results for the investigation into Mom and Dad's accident finally came out. There was no direct evidence showing that Martin had bribed the driver to stage the "accident", but the charges against him for funneling money through s

I didn't go to Wingdor. At least, not on that day. After Samuel sent me the transfer records, I had the driver take me straight to the police station instead. As it turned out, the money had come from a shell consulting company. Also, the company's ultimate beneficiary was Martin Andrews, an early investor in Aaron's startup project.I knew him. After marrying Aaron in my past life, he always turned up and called me "Mrs. Dawson" in a very close way, sending us thoughtful gift baskets every holiday season. Later, when the company went public, his initial investment yielded returns dozens of times over. The investigating officer said, "We can only confirm the transfer for now. We can't prove that the accident was intentional. Please try not to jump to the worst conclusion, Ms. Mosley."I didn't. However, I did remember something. The day before the accident, Dad called me and told me there were issues with the data in Aaron's project. He asked me to warn Aaron about the issues

The faculty handled the matter swiftly. Nancy was disqualified from the entrepreneurship competition, and the exchange program was suspended. As for whether or not this constituted an intentional leak of confidential information, the email correspondence was still under investigation.Aaron was removed as the project lead for giving false testimony, and the entire team had to bring in a replacement on very short notice. The day the news broke, I was at the hospital, processing my discharge. Professor Sanford had arranged transport to bring me from the hospital, and one of the staff helped me bring my suitcase downstairs.Just as I stepped into the lobby, I saw Aaron sitting on the waiting bench in the hallway, looking as though he hadn't slept all night. He already had stubble showing on his face. He immediately got up the moment he saw me."I'll give you a ride.""No, thank you.""It's hard for you to get around with your leg like that.""I have transport.""Carmen," he s

"It was with Carmen," Aaron said. The entire conference room fell silent for a few seconds.I didn't speak and just looked at him.Professor Ewing double-checked with him and said, "You mean to say that the laptop was being used by Carmen Mosley all night from 1:17 am onward?"Aaron gulped and answered, "Yes."Nancy didn't even lift her head next to him. However, her tight grip on the hem of her shirt relaxed.I suddenly chuckled."Fine."Aaron frowned. "Carmen, this is not the time to act out of spite.""I know," I said, placing my phone on the table. "That's why I also prepared something."Then, I began playing the recording. Nancy's voice came through the speaker."I just wanted to send my visa documents to my overseas supervisor last night. But both the ZIP files had such similar names that I ended up clicking on the wrong one. But I deleted the email the moment I realized it."The conference room erupted in an instant.Nancy jerked her head up."You recorded us?"I
