Chapter 3

Author: Big Belly
Nancy came to my room alone on the third afternoon. She placed my laptop on the bedside table and said, "Thanks for lending me your laptop. I just used it to revise my visa application materials."

I just hummed and didn't press any further. However, she didn't leave right away.

"Carmen, there really isn't anything going on between Aaron and me. At least, not until you're willing to let go of him."

I looked up.

"That's a novel take," I said. "Since when do you get to approve whether or not I let him go?"

Nancy looked a little flustered.

"That's not what I meant. Aaron stayed up all night in the lab, fixing the code while constantly checking his phone because he was worried that something might happen to you.

"You just suddenly announced that you were going to Wingdor. And he thought that maybe he was the one who forced you into making that decision."

"So?"

Nancy replied, "So, could you stop pushing him onto me one moment and then threatening to leave him the next?"

She took another breath and said in a low voice, "You just lost your parents, so everyone feels sorry for you. But Aaron is not your painkiller. He also has a life that he wants to live as well."

I had heard this line many times in my previous life.

Everyone kept reminding me of it every year after Nancy left him—that Aaron had given up on love for my sake. They told me that he was only staying by my side out of duty and kindness, and thus, it was a debt I owed him forever.

I looked at Nancy.

"Don't worry," I said. "I won't be taking any painkillers or clinging to anyone this time."

Nancy's eyes turned red. "Must you be so snide with your comments? I just wanted to fight for it for once. You've both known each other for 20 years, and I never even had the chance to speak up, and now, I finally—"

"Then go ahead and fight for it," I said, cutting her off. "Just don't demand praise from me for being 'classy' about your fight for the guy. It's exhausting."

The ward door opened just then, and Aaron walked in with my meds. He caught sight of Nancy's reddened eyes at once.

"What's wrong?"

Nancy shook her head. "Nothing. I just said the wrong thing."

Aaron instinctively shielded her behind him and said, "Carmen. Nancy came all the way here to apologize to you. Must you be sarcastic with her?"

I shrugged. "She was the one who wanted to cry. What's that got to do with me?"

"You weren't like this before."

I smiled. "Well then, maybe I was just dumb."

I then retrieved two things from my bedside drawer. One was the key to their startup studio, and the other was an access card for the project's backend system.

"It's a good thing you're here. I'm quitting the project," I told him.

Aaron froze for a moment. Then, he said, "Do you realize that we spent six months building this? If you quit now, all of that work will go to waste!"

"Just think of it as cutting your losses now."

"Do you always treat both relationships and work like spreadsheets?"

"Am I supposed to just keep taking losses if I don't calculate everything clearly and properly?"

His expression darkened at my retort. But just as he was about to speak, his phone rang. It was our professor from the college Innovation Center, Professor Bruce Ewing, and his tone was grave.

Apparently, at 1:17 am the previous night, Aaron's team's core model—which hadn't been made public yet—and their list of investors had been emailed to a rival team using an external account.

They'd traced the device used to send the email to my laptop. Even the account used to log in was mine as well. He ordered us to come to the college immediately to assist with the investigation.

The hospital room fell silent.

I looked at Nancy.

"You had my laptop last night."

Her face paled at once.

"But I swore I only used it to edit my visa application. I don't know anything about this."

Aaron blocked her from me at once.

"Nothing's been proven yet. Don't pin the blame on her that quickly."

I didn't say a word. He just gripped his phone more tightly and lowered his voice to warn me, "When we get there, just follow my lead. Don't say anything rash."

Five years later, I became the resident lead for the mural restoration project.I converted the studio Dad left behind into a Digital Cultural Heritage Conservation Laboratory. Many media outlets and reporters arrived on the day of the grand opening.Someone asked me, "Ms. Mosley! Can you please explain why you've persisted in working with digital heritage and digital legacy?"I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled and answered, "Because human memory is fallible, and machines can be wrong. Hence why accurate evidence matters most."At the end of the grand opening session, my assistant, Kelsey Conway, ran over to me with an iPad."Ms. Mosley! There's some old data that requires your authorization for deletion. It's from a personal account synced to the system from five years ago."I opened the file and saw a familiar name—Aaron Dawson.Over the past few years, I had occasionally heard news about him here and there. He never started another business after what happened the last ti

The six-month project finally came to an end, and I returned to the city. But it wasn't because of Aaron. Rather, it was because the hearing for my parents' case was scheduled there. On the day the trial concluded, Martin was sentenced for multiple counts of financial crimes. But as for the car accident involving my parents, the chain of evidence remained insufficient, and he wasn't able to be prosecuted for intentional assault. The outcome wasn't perfect, but it was enough for me.It was drizzling outside when I stepped out of the courthouse. I saw Aaron standing at the foot of the steps without an umbrella, looking much thinner than I remembered. He saw me, but he didn't come over. Instead, he just nodded and said, "You're back.""Yeah.""How's your leg?""It's better.""Good to know."We didn't have anything to say to each other after that.I found it rather strange. After all, we used to talk nineteen to the dozen from morning to night, and now even a comment on the weath

The wind in Wingdor was big and fierce.During my first month with the project team, I still couldn't stand for long, so I spent my days organizing image files on my laptop in my lap.One of my seniors, Dylan Walker, saw me on crutches and came over to annoy me."Looking at your condition, you're going to crumble even before the walls do when you restore the murals later."I smacked him in the head with my file folder. "Get lost."He doubled over with laughter instead and said, "Seems like you're fine if you can curse at me like that. I guess you're not dying yet."Life gradually became busier for me. Nobody asked me about Aaron, and nobody bothered where I'd suddenly popped up from like a wild daisy, but that was just as well.Three months later, the results for the investigation into Mom and Dad's accident finally came out. There was no direct evidence showing that Martin had bribed the driver to stage the "accident", but the charges against him for funneling money through s

I didn't go to Wingdor. At least, not on that day. After Samuel sent me the transfer records, I had the driver take me straight to the police station instead. As it turned out, the money had come from a shell consulting company. Also, the company's ultimate beneficiary was Martin Andrews, an early investor in Aaron's startup project.I knew him. After marrying Aaron in my past life, he always turned up and called me "Mrs. Dawson" in a very close way, sending us thoughtful gift baskets every holiday season. Later, when the company went public, his initial investment yielded returns dozens of times over. The investigating officer said, "We can only confirm the transfer for now. We can't prove that the accident was intentional. Please try not to jump to the worst conclusion, Ms. Mosley."I didn't. However, I did remember something. The day before the accident, Dad called me and told me there were issues with the data in Aaron's project. He asked me to warn Aaron about the issues

The faculty handled the matter swiftly. Nancy was disqualified from the entrepreneurship competition, and the exchange program was suspended. As for whether or not this constituted an intentional leak of confidential information, the email correspondence was still under investigation.Aaron was removed as the project lead for giving false testimony, and the entire team had to bring in a replacement on very short notice. The day the news broke, I was at the hospital, processing my discharge. Professor Sanford had arranged transport to bring me from the hospital, and one of the staff helped me bring my suitcase downstairs.Just as I stepped into the lobby, I saw Aaron sitting on the waiting bench in the hallway, looking as though he hadn't slept all night. He already had stubble showing on his face. He immediately got up the moment he saw me."I'll give you a ride.""No, thank you.""It's hard for you to get around with your leg like that.""I have transport.""Carmen," he s

"It was with Carmen," Aaron said. The entire conference room fell silent for a few seconds.I didn't speak and just looked at him.Professor Ewing double-checked with him and said, "You mean to say that the laptop was being used by Carmen Mosley all night from 1:17 am onward?"Aaron gulped and answered, "Yes."Nancy didn't even lift her head next to him. However, her tight grip on the hem of her shirt relaxed.I suddenly chuckled."Fine."Aaron frowned. "Carmen, this is not the time to act out of spite.""I know," I said, placing my phone on the table. "That's why I also prepared something."Then, I began playing the recording. Nancy's voice came through the speaker."I just wanted to send my visa documents to my overseas supervisor last night. But both the ZIP files had such similar names that I ended up clicking on the wrong one. But I deleted the email the moment I realized it."The conference room erupted in an instant.Nancy jerked her head up."You recorded us?"I
