Chapter 5

Author: Bright Lights
So, for a while, I actively tried to avoid Mia. Whenever I looked at that innocent face of hers, I felt like a monster.

That was when Charlie "accidentally" stumbled into Mia's space. Compared to my scarred face, disfigured by severe burns, Charlie's handsome features made him even more alluring. So I suppose it made sense that Mia fell for him at first sight.

After that, Mia spent her days staring blankly at the door while also growing increasingly dismissive of me. On the rare occasions we spent time together, all she wanted to do was ask about Charlie.

"Was that guy from the other day your brother? Why hasn't he come back lately? What's his name? What does he like to eat? What's his favorite color?"

Before this incident, I hadn't seen Charlie in a long time.

Once I became an adult, I kicked his family of three out of my mother's house. Then, after Dad died, I cut off all contact with him and his mother.

When I looked back on the security footage, I saw that Charlie had run right into Mia while he came back to the house to grab some priceless artwork. He was so scared out of his mind that he ran away, while she fell in love with him instantly.

How ironic.

"You want to see him?" I asked.

Mia blushed and nodded.

I remembered what my attending physician had told me—keeping a mermaid in a good mood would be beneficial to the growth of her heart.

So, I agreed.

I allowed Charlie to come over on certain days and keep Mia company. But Mia quickly grew dissatisfied with seeing him just once or even three times a week. She wanted nothing more than to spend every single day with him, and she began to resent me for it.

"What right do you have to keep Charlie from me? How dare you restrict my freedom? Who do you think you are?

"You're so selfish, Rick Hardy! Trapping me by your side isn't love—it's imprisonment!"

…

"Rick is so selfish. You're his brother, and he won't even help you find a job."

The sound of Mia's voice in the present overlapped with the one from my memories.

"Don't say that about Ricky. He's just too busy. That's why he hasn't helped."

"With how he spends all his time hovering around me, it really doesn't look like he's that busy. You're just too kind, Charlie."

I had no intention of interrupting their little moment together, but the crepes in my hand were getting cold, and I didn't want to give Mia another excuse to make a scene.

I pushed the door open and walked in.

The moment Mia saw me return, her expression instantly hardened.

"Get Charlie a job at your company."

It wasn't a request. It was an order, delivered as though she were entitled to it. She knew I wouldn't refuse her.

"Sure."

Hearing my answer, Charlie finally pulled away from Mia. He took the crepes from my hand and shot me a smug, taunting look.

"See that, big brother? You'll always lose to me."

I had no idea what he was so proud of. Was dating a fish really something to brag about?

"Lose to you at what?"

The smile on his face stiffened.

"Even now, you're still playing dumb? You must hate me for stealing Mia away from you."

Anything that could be stolen was never that important to begin with. Dad was one example, and Mia was another.

The people and things I truly cared about, Charlie would never be able to take from me.

"I only want her heart. You can have the rest of her."

Neither human nor fish seemed capable of understanding me. No wonder they made such a good couple.

What a tragic pair of star-crossed lovers."Is that so?" I asked. "Then how come I heard you've already contacted an overseas buyer so you can sell her off to repay your loan shark debts?""How did you know?" Charlie shrieked before slapping a hand over his mouth. But it was too late.A piercing scream erupted from Mia. "What?"I frowned instinctively. Even dead, this fish wouldn't shut up."You were planning to trick Mia into moving in with you, then sell her to someone else a few months later, weren't you? Unfortunately for you, she's dead now, so your plan fell through."Did you come back today because you found out a mermaid's corpse could still fetch a high price?"This was all the information my private investigator had uncovered while I was at the hospital a few days ago.And here I thought they were actually in love. As it turned out, Mia was the only one who'd gotten caught up in the romance.Realizing that he'd been exposed, Charlie dropped his act."You already kn

Mia's soul kept floating around me, buzzing in my ear like an annoying mosquito. So she had noticed everything I'd done for her after all. She'd just gotten so used to it that she'd started taking it for granted. To her, everything I'd done for her wasn't even worth the sticker Charlie had casually thrown her way. That was why there was a saying that animals could never be taught gratitude.Charlie, meanwhile, kept muttering "impossible" over and over again. He'd genuinely believed he'd beaten me, only to find out it had been a farce all along. He'd jumped right into the trap I'd set like a pathetic clown."Also, I've already called the police. You've been using your visits to Mia as an excuse to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of valuables from my house. You didn't think I'd let you get away with that, did you, Charlie?"I threw the evidence I'd collected right in his face. His face went pale inch by inch as he looked through the documents. He shrieked and bolted f

I waited for the perfect moment. Then, I pulled out my knife and, with one swift stride, plunged it straight into Mia's chest.I twisted my wrist, and a perfect-looking heart was exposed to the air.I'd moved too fast. Neither of them had time to react."Have you lost your mind?" Mia screamed when she saw me remove her heart.Everything had happened so suddenly. By the time she realized what I'd done and reached out to snatch it back, it was already too late. I'd already placed her heart in the special storage cooler and was rushing straight to the hospital.Mia stared blankly at the gaping hole in her chest. She couldn't understand why I'd done that. Was it just because she didn't love me back?Charlie, seeing Mia bleeding out beneath him, screamed in terror. In the end, Mia never got her answer. She just slowly slipped away, consumed by fear and indignation. Eventually, her soul drifted into the air, where she could only watch helplessly as Charlie fled in panic, leaving her c

"I just talked it over with Charlie," Mia started. "I'm moving into his place the day after tomorrow. His apartment is too small, and he doesn't have a climate-controlled tank. Also, his salary isn't nearly enough to support both of us.""So transfer some of your company shares to him. It doesn't have to be much. 25 percent should be enough.""25 percent?"I couldn't hide the disbelief in my voice. I had no idea what gave them the nerve to demand a quarter of my company's shares.Hearing my pushback, Mia snapped impatiently, "It's not like you're strapped for cash. What's the big deal about giving Charlie some? If you don't, how are the two of us supposed to live? Besides, he was entitled to that money in the first place. You're just returning it to its rightful owner now."I almost laughed from sheer anger. These two parasites were still trying to take a big bite out of me even on the very last day."Do you even know how much 25 percent is worth?"Mia's patience snapped at yet

I was still mulling over my conversation with Dr. Lewman, so I barely paid any attention to what Charlie was saying.I thought about how Dr. Lewman had told me to remove Mia's heart when she was at her happiest. That made me wonder when exactly that was."Do you know when Mia is happiest?"Hearing me suddenly ask a question—and a question like that no less—his lips curled into a knowing smile. He assumed it wasn't that I didn't care; I had just been too heartbroken to say anything, and deep down, I still cared about Mia.Charlie crossed one leg over the other, his expression delighted, and his voice taunting."When she's hooking up with me, of course."So that was it.When I returned home, I asked Mia the same question."Mia, when are you happiest?"She rolled her eyes at me."A whole day has already passed. Stop trying to figure out how to win me over. I'm never going to fall in love with you."Though I found her inability to answer a simple question almost laughable, I kep

The next day, I'd barely reached my desk when my phone rang.As soon as I picked up, Mia's condescending voice blared through the speaker. "Get home right now!"I sighed. I had no idea what kind of tantrum she was throwing this time."What is it? I'm at work."When I didn't immediately agree, Mia's tone turned even more irritated."If you don't come right now, I'm never taking my medicine again!"I let out another sigh. "Fine."There were only two days left. I didn't want anything to go wrong before then. When I got home, I found Charlie there, too."I've already arranged a job for you. Why haven't you gone to work?"Charlie stretched lazily, not caring in the slightest."You own the company, Ricky. What difference does it make whether I go to work or not? You just have to issue me the paycheck like normal."Mia nodded in agreement."Exactly. Charlie and I have some important business to take care of. Go stand guard outside the door.""If I stand guard, you'll go ahead an
