Chapter 3

Author: Sway Sway
On the day of the welcome banquet, the ballroom was packed with guests. Everyone was craning their necks, dying to see what the long-lost heir of the richest family looked like.

I threw on an oversized T-shirt and jeans before stepping into the ballroom.

Mom had actually prepared more than a dozen custom-tailored suits for me, but the moment I thought about how much energy changing and styling would take, I turned them all down without hesitation.

A few loud, undisguised snickers drifted out from the crowd.

"You can really tell that he came from the sticks—he looks so tacky. Put him next to the Ziegler family's adopted son, and it's like comparing a nobody to royalty."

Ethan was dressed to the nines that day. He puffed out his chest, basking in all the envious looks from the people around him.

I couldn't be bothered to argue.

Mom and Dad still hadn't come downstairs, and I was starting to get hungry. I found an empty corner, sat down, and got ready to grab a quick bite.

All of a sudden, someone rammed into me hard. I didn't think much of it and just kept munching on my pastry.

The next second, a guy suddenly grabbed my wrist and demanded loudly, "Why did you steal my stuff?"

Every gaze in the room snapped toward us at once.

I knew who the guy was—Corey Stone. He fished a sparkling brooch out of my jeans pocket and declared righteously, "This is a family heirloom my grandmother left me, and it's priceless. Now, I've found it in your pocket. If you didn't steal it, then who did?"

He clamped down on my hand and shouted to all the guests, "Look, everybody! The real heir of the richest family in the city is actually a petty thief!"

The place instantly erupted. People whispered and pointed at me.

Right on cue, Ethan came over and graciously tried to smooth things over. "Corey, I'm sure this is a misunderstanding. Ben isn't like that."

They'd been friends for ten years. Seeing Ethan act like he wanted to sweep things under the rug, Corey looked angry and frustrated.

"Why are you trying to stop me? Are you seriously okay with getting overshadowed by a thief?"

On the surface, Ethan tried to calm him down and explain things, but there was smug satisfaction hidden in his eyes.

I'd seen these cheap frame-ups a million times before. I was over it and turned to leave.

"You're not going anywhere!" Corey grabbed me by the arm and mocked, "What, you think you can just walk off after stealing something? Is this what the Ziegler family's upbringing is like?"

I let out a helpless sigh and said, "I didn't."

That only made him angrier. He raised his voice and shouted, "If it wasn't you, then who was it? You're the only broke loser here!"

He shoved me hard, and I hit the floor with a heavy thud.

I actually wanted to explain myself—this was a matter of basic morals, after all. But the second my back hit the carpet, I realized it was softer than my bed. So I just shut my eyes and decided to lie there.

Mom had just come downstairs when she saw this. Once again, she let out that same piercing screech that had impressed me.

"Sweetie, are you okay?" She ran to my side, then swept a sharp gaze across the entire room. She demanded, "Who did this?"

At first, the guests had taken one look at my plain clothes and assumed I wasn't favored at home. Only when they saw how worked up Mom was over me did they realize they'd been dead wrong.

Corey was stunned, too. He stammered out a weak excuse. "H-He stole my stuff, so I just gave him a little shove…"

"And what is it that he supposedly stole?" Mom snarled.

Corey rushed to pull out the brooch.

Mom didn't even spare it a glance. She snatched it from him, tossed it to the floor, and ground it under her heel until it shattered. "Not even a beggar would want this trash. As if my son would stoop to stealing it!"

Dad's face was dark with fury as he asked dangerously, "Are you implying that the Ziegler family is so poor we can't afford a brooch? Or do you believe that the Stone family is in a position to challenge us now? Don't you want that project in the east of the city anymore?"

Corey went white on the spot. He cried, "I'm sorry, Mr. Ziegler! I shouldn't have gone after your son. This is a personal grudge, so please, don't tell my dad about this. He'll kill me."

Dad snorted, clearly ready to keep going. Before he could, Ethan suddenly stepped forward, his face full of concern. "Mom, Dad, I think we should take Ben to the hospital first and get him a full workup."

I didn't dodge in time, and a tearing pain ripped through my abdomen.Fresh out of prison, Ethan no longer looked like the high and mighty scion he once was. He was so gaunt he looked like a ghost. He gripped the knife and pushed it deeper into my stomach, looking like a man possessed. "You wanted to die, didn't you? I'll help you out!"He sounded completely unhinged as he muttered, "Once you're dead, I'll be Mom and Dad's only son again. They'll have to take me back."Cold sweat soaked my back from the pain, but his idiotic rambling had me gritting my teeth. "Are you out of your damn mind? Get this straight—I'm their biological son. You screwed yourself over and ended up like this. You want me dead? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm rich now. I've suddenly got plenty to live for!"Over the past three years, Mom and Dad had forced me to work out and learn self-defense. I was no longer the weak piece of trash that collapsed at the slightest thing from back then.I clamped my hand a

Because the evidence was ironclad, Ethan was eventually sentenced to two years in prison for attempted murder. When the verdict was announced in court, he lost it, sobbing and screaming that he wanted to see Mom and Dad.But at that moment, they were glued to my bedside at the hospital. I was all they could think of.The second I opened my eyes, Mom hurried over with a steaming bowl of soup. She blew on it carefully and said, "Ben, have some soup. I personally watched it being cooked and tasted it. I promise it's not too salty."Dad stood beside her, picking up slices of peeled fruit. He cut them into bite-sized pieces, stuck them on toothpicks, and held them up to my lips as he said gently, "Be good, okay? Eat some fruit and get your vitamins."Felicia was so happy to see me awake that she couldn't stop smiling. She rushed out to call the doctor to do a full checkup. When the doctor announced with a smile that everything looked good and I was recovering nicely, my whole family le

That night, the power suddenly went out at the hospital. The backup generator kicked in pretty quickly, but those few minutes when the cameras were down were enough for Ethan to sneak into my ward.He stared at me lying there, motionless, and hissed under his breath, "Why did you have to come back and steal my life, you bastard? Since you grew up out there, you should've died out there. And why was it that Mom and Dad only had eyes for you the moment you showed up?"He charged toward me and started clawing and beating me, venting all his resentment on me. In the end, when he realized he was running out of time, he simply grabbed a pillow and pressed it over my face, snarling, "Go to hell. Once you're dead, no one will be fighting me for anything."Don't worry, though. Seeing as we were brothers for some time, I'll make sure to visit your grave this time next year."The more Ethan thought about it, the more pleased with himself he felt.Right then, the ward door was kicked open wit

Felicia's eyes were bloodshot as she shouted almost hysterically, "Aren't we just pushing Ben to his death if we keep letting this go on?"Mom jolted and grabbed Felicia's arm in a panic. "What did you say? Say that again!"Felicia took a deep breath and repeated herself. Then she slammed a thick stack of investigation reports onto the table, tears of guilt spilling down her face."Ben only went missing back then because of my negligence. I've always felt like I owed him, so I secretly dug into the past ten-plus years of his life, hoping I could make it up to him however I could. I never imagined he'd suffered so much."Her voice trembled as she flipped through the report, every line weighing heavier than the last. "Even though Ben got adopted, his life was hell. He was sold to a remote mountain village when he was three. He was so small and scrawny that no one wanted him, so money actually had to be thrown in to get someone to take him."His adoptive parents treated him like free

The crowd erupted into panicked screams. "Someone jumped!"Onlookers surged forward, sealing off the scene completely.Mom and Dad didn't react at first. It wasn't until Mom caught sight of the locket on the neck of the person on the ground that her legs went weak. She'd put it on me last night, saying it was a family heirloom from my grandmother, something even she couldn't bear to wear herself."Ben, don't scare me like this. Somebody, help! Please, save my son!" she screamed.Mom clung to me, sobbing so hard she was on the verge of passing out.Dad frantically made calls and shouted into the phone. "Get me all the best doctors in the entire city! Right now!"I was rushed straight into the operating room for emergency treatment. Dad stood outside the doors, his eyes bloodshot as he slammed his fist hard into the wall."Why… Why would Ben suddenly jump? Was what we said just now too harsh?"Ethan felt his stomach twist with anxiety, but he still forced himself to stay calm as

"Yes, you're right. That's what matters now."Mom and Dad didn't dare waste another second. They rushed me to the hospital and got me the most comprehensive workup they could get.Mom grabbed the doctor by the coat. "Doctor, how is my son? The last time he was checked, we were told he had a weak heart…"The doctor flipped through the report and said calmly, "He's fine. All his vitals are normal. He's very healthy."Mom was taken aback. She looked at me lying motionless on the bed and pressed, "Then why isn't he awake yet?"The doctor adjusted his glasses and snorted. "He's playing dead. Kids these days pretend to be sick all the time just to force their parents to give in to whatever they want. I'd say your son's the same."Mom was about to snap at him for talking nonsense when she saw me slowly sit up. "It's fine, Mom. I really just didn't feel like moving."The room went dead silent.Right then, Ethan suddenly spoke up, his eyes reddened. He looked like he was struggling with
