Chapter 2

Author: Sway Sway
Ethan's eyes widened in shock. He leaned in close to me and hissed, "I knew you weren't easy to deal with. No wonder you managed to find your way back here after 18 years out there on your own. I totally underestimated you."

I blinked at him, baffled. What on earth was he talking about?

The soup was so salty it made me want to puke, but if I spat it out, I'd have to wipe my mouth and rinse it… That was way too much hassle, so I just forced it down.

"Sweetie, I had Wanda make this chicken broth just for you. How is it?" Mom looked at me anxiously.

I'd only planned to set it down after a sip, but when I saw the bright, hopeful look in her eyes, I silently picked the spoon back up.

Oh, well. I guess I could just finish it.

If I said it was too salty, she'd definitely have Wanda Smith, the housekeeper, make another pot. Then the whole family would gather around me again, fussing and fretting.

Just picturing that whole drawn-out routine made me feel drained. So I took spoonful after spoonful of the soup until I finished every last drop.

The spoon slipped from my hand and hit the floor with a clatter. Right after that, I went down too, collapsing onto the floor.

"Ben! What's wrong?" Mom threw herself at me.

The family doctor hadn't even had time to change clothes before he came running over again, his forehead shiny with sweat.

After a round of checks, he gave his diagnosis. "Mr. Ben has acute hypernatremia from too much salt. It's not serious. He just needs to drink more water and rest."

Dad frowned, clearly confused. "That makes no sense. Our food is always light on oil and salt. How could this…"

Suddenly, something seemed to click for him. He grabbed my bowl of soup from the table, dipped a bit with his finger, and tasted it. Sure enough, it was unbearably salty.

He slammed a hand on the table.

"Who made the soup today?" he barked.

Wanda stepped forward and stammered, "I-I did, but Mrs. Ziegler tasted it before it was served, and it was fine. However…"

Her voice grew smaller as she pointed at Ethan. "Mr. Ethan handled the salt jar after the tasting and before the soup was served."

In an instant, all eyes turned to Ethan.

He looked shifty as he tried to talk his way out of the situation. "I just thought Ben wouldn't be used to food that bland, so I added an extra spoonful. Besides, why didn't he just spit it out if it tasted bad?"

Mom cradled my pale face, her tears welling up again. "Oh, my silly child. Why didn't you spit the soup out?"

Great. The exact situation I dreaded had still happened. What I hated most was having to explain myself. My mind raced as I tried to come up with the fewest possible words to brush this off.

Thankfully, Felicia had a flash of inspiration and jumped in to cover for me. "He just got home—he must still be feeling shy. He probably didn't want to hurt your feelings by spitting it out."

That wasn't the case at all, but I still nodded in relief.

Mom's eyes instantly filled with guilt. She pulled me into her arms and held me tight. "Ben, to make up for everything you've suffered, I'm going to throw a huge welcome banquet so you can officially be acknowledged as a Ziegler. You can take your rightful place in this family."

"Yes, that's right!" Ethan immediately seized the chance and said eagerly, "Let me handle the party planning. I'll definitely prepare a huge surprise for Ben."

I didn't dodge in time, and a tearing pain ripped through my abdomen.Fresh out of prison, Ethan no longer looked like the high and mighty scion he once was. He was so gaunt he looked like a ghost. He gripped the knife and pushed it deeper into my stomach, looking like a man possessed. "You wanted to die, didn't you? I'll help you out!"He sounded completely unhinged as he muttered, "Once you're dead, I'll be Mom and Dad's only son again. They'll have to take me back."Cold sweat soaked my back from the pain, but his idiotic rambling had me gritting my teeth. "Are you out of your damn mind? Get this straight—I'm their biological son. You screwed yourself over and ended up like this. You want me dead? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm rich now. I've suddenly got plenty to live for!"Over the past three years, Mom and Dad had forced me to work out and learn self-defense. I was no longer the weak piece of trash that collapsed at the slightest thing from back then.I clamped my hand a

Because the evidence was ironclad, Ethan was eventually sentenced to two years in prison for attempted murder. When the verdict was announced in court, he lost it, sobbing and screaming that he wanted to see Mom and Dad.But at that moment, they were glued to my bedside at the hospital. I was all they could think of.The second I opened my eyes, Mom hurried over with a steaming bowl of soup. She blew on it carefully and said, "Ben, have some soup. I personally watched it being cooked and tasted it. I promise it's not too salty."Dad stood beside her, picking up slices of peeled fruit. He cut them into bite-sized pieces, stuck them on toothpicks, and held them up to my lips as he said gently, "Be good, okay? Eat some fruit and get your vitamins."Felicia was so happy to see me awake that she couldn't stop smiling. She rushed out to call the doctor to do a full checkup. When the doctor announced with a smile that everything looked good and I was recovering nicely, my whole family le

That night, the power suddenly went out at the hospital. The backup generator kicked in pretty quickly, but those few minutes when the cameras were down were enough for Ethan to sneak into my ward.He stared at me lying there, motionless, and hissed under his breath, "Why did you have to come back and steal my life, you bastard? Since you grew up out there, you should've died out there. And why was it that Mom and Dad only had eyes for you the moment you showed up?"He charged toward me and started clawing and beating me, venting all his resentment on me. In the end, when he realized he was running out of time, he simply grabbed a pillow and pressed it over my face, snarling, "Go to hell. Once you're dead, no one will be fighting me for anything."Don't worry, though. Seeing as we were brothers for some time, I'll make sure to visit your grave this time next year."The more Ethan thought about it, the more pleased with himself he felt.Right then, the ward door was kicked open wit

Felicia's eyes were bloodshot as she shouted almost hysterically, "Aren't we just pushing Ben to his death if we keep letting this go on?"Mom jolted and grabbed Felicia's arm in a panic. "What did you say? Say that again!"Felicia took a deep breath and repeated herself. Then she slammed a thick stack of investigation reports onto the table, tears of guilt spilling down her face."Ben only went missing back then because of my negligence. I've always felt like I owed him, so I secretly dug into the past ten-plus years of his life, hoping I could make it up to him however I could. I never imagined he'd suffered so much."Her voice trembled as she flipped through the report, every line weighing heavier than the last. "Even though Ben got adopted, his life was hell. He was sold to a remote mountain village when he was three. He was so small and scrawny that no one wanted him, so money actually had to be thrown in to get someone to take him."His adoptive parents treated him like free

The crowd erupted into panicked screams. "Someone jumped!"Onlookers surged forward, sealing off the scene completely.Mom and Dad didn't react at first. It wasn't until Mom caught sight of the locket on the neck of the person on the ground that her legs went weak. She'd put it on me last night, saying it was a family heirloom from my grandmother, something even she couldn't bear to wear herself."Ben, don't scare me like this. Somebody, help! Please, save my son!" she screamed.Mom clung to me, sobbing so hard she was on the verge of passing out.Dad frantically made calls and shouted into the phone. "Get me all the best doctors in the entire city! Right now!"I was rushed straight into the operating room for emergency treatment. Dad stood outside the doors, his eyes bloodshot as he slammed his fist hard into the wall."Why… Why would Ben suddenly jump? Was what we said just now too harsh?"Ethan felt his stomach twist with anxiety, but he still forced himself to stay calm as

"Yes, you're right. That's what matters now."Mom and Dad didn't dare waste another second. They rushed me to the hospital and got me the most comprehensive workup they could get.Mom grabbed the doctor by the coat. "Doctor, how is my son? The last time he was checked, we were told he had a weak heart…"The doctor flipped through the report and said calmly, "He's fine. All his vitals are normal. He's very healthy."Mom was taken aback. She looked at me lying motionless on the bed and pressed, "Then why isn't he awake yet?"The doctor adjusted his glasses and snorted. "He's playing dead. Kids these days pretend to be sick all the time just to force their parents to give in to whatever they want. I'd say your son's the same."Mom was about to snap at him for talking nonsense when she saw me slowly sit up. "It's fine, Mom. I really just didn't feel like moving."The room went dead silent.Right then, Ethan suddenly spoke up, his eyes reddened. He looked like he was struggling with
