I had been trapped in a small, dark room for three years when Mom picked me up.

"You should know what to say and what not to say after you leave, right?" the instructor asked, glaring at me with eyes that were brimming with warning.

I nodded obediently and changed into a clean white dress. I then trailed behind the instructor. I had just made it to the entrance when someone blocked my path.

"You've been through a lot, Char!"

I couldn't help but think about the countless terrible nights that I was forced to suffer when I heard my sister Angelina Sharpe's voice. I reflexively fell to my knees by her feet and stammered, "I-I'm sorry. It's my fault. Please forgive me."

Angelina threw herself into Mom's arms with a shocked expression.

"What's going on with Char, Mom? Is she still mad at me?" she asked.

The fear and despair in my eyes were obvious as I shrank back. Mom was briefly stunned before a deep disdain filled her eyes.

"What's with the pitiful act, Charlotte? We just sent you here to learn the rules since you mistreated Angelina in the past. Do you really think that you'll convince anyone with this act of yours?"

She then swatted my hand away and brushed her sleeve.

Angelina approached me with a mocking look on her face, whispering into my ear. "Did you have a good time during the last three years, Charlotte? I specifically asked them to take good care of you."

I reflexively shoved her away when I felt her fingers on my skin. She stumbled backward and nearly lost her footing.

Mom's expression immediately turned furious. She slapped me hard across the face and snapped, "How dare you push Angelina right in front of me? It seems that you haven't learned to behave yourself in the last three years. You can just keep staying here if that's the case."

My entire body trembled violently as I frantically shook my head. I fell to my knees again and repeatedly knocked my forehead against the floor, saying, "I've learned my lesson, Mom. I shouldn't have pushed Angelina. I'm begging you. Please take me away from here. I'll never do it again."

Mom scoffed before turning around and leaving, ignoring my pleas.

Angelina glanced at me before grabbing Mom's hand and playing coy with her. "I'm sure that Char didn't do it on purpose, Mom. Why don't you forgive her? Let's go home together."

"Fine," Mom said with a sigh. "I'll let it slide since you asked. You're just too kind."

The corners of Angelina's lips curled up into a smile as she walked over to me. She crouched down and caressed my pale face, saying, "Don't worry, Char. You're still the heiress of the Sharpe family no matter what state you end up in."

The heiress of the Sharpe family. How could a rose that had been crushed into the mud possibly return to its former glory?

I numbly trailed behind them, unable to stop my tears from falling as I watched Angelina and Mom chat and tease each other.

20 years ago, to ensure that her daughter would live a good life, Angelina's mother bribed her relative who was working in the hospital and sneakily swapped two babies from their cradles.

Later, when the Sharpe family discovered what had happened, they searched for me and took me home. However, the years-long relationship that they had developed with Angelina wasn't something that someone like me, a lost daughter who had just returned, could erase.

Even three years ago, I just wanted Mom's and Dad's love and acknowledgement. I never once thought of stealing anything away from Angelina. However, no one believed me. I also had no idea why Angelina was assaulted, or why she said those words to me.

…

After we returned home, Angelina smiled and locked arms with my ex-fiancé, Henry Fuller. "Char is back, Henry. We can live just like the old days from today on."

"Sure," Henry said while tenderly patting her long hair.

His eyes were full of adoration as he gazed at her. Meanwhile, there was a dark and unreadable emotion in his eyes when he looked at me.

When the two of them walked past me, Angelina moved her lips close to my ear and whispered, "Henry and I are a match made in heaven. You're so filthy that you don't even deserve to carry my shoes for me."

I was briefly stunned. Did Angelina plan all of this just because Henry wanted to marry me three years ago?

Henry frowned, dodging Angelina's outstretched hand with a look of disdain. "You're simply paying for the consequences of your actions, Angelina. You owe this to Charlotte," he said.Angelina suddenly burst into laughter and caressed her belly. "But what if I told you that I'm pregnant with your child? Can you bear to see me and your child be locked behind bars?"Henry was utterly stunned, staring at her in disbelief.Angelina rose to her feet and slowly approached me. "Did you really believe that Henry loved you, Charlotte? He couldn't stop crawling into my bed when you were suffering in Trueheart Academy for the last three years."In the past, her words would have crushed me. However, at that moment, I felt nothing but disgust. I also didn't want a man who told me he loved me while hugging another woman.Henry looked apologetic as he approached me. "Give me a year, Charlotte. I'll get rid of Angelina once she gives birth to the baby. We'll get married after that, okay? I swear t

Mom was Grandpa's only daughter, so he showered her with love ever since she was a child. He sternly scolded her for the first time in her life when she told him that she wanted to marry Dad.However, his criticisms weren't enough to stop Mom's hopeless romantic tendencies. He had no choice but to accept Dad into his family when she became pregnant with me.Dad was just a pauper. He couldn't satisfy his pitiful pride when he was with the Ellons, always feeling as if he was beneath them."That's why I cooked up this scheme. I didn't expect the old man to notice that something was amiss. In the end, he still brought Charlotte back. I had no choice but to swap the old geezer's medicine for Angelina's sake. You have no idea how much he reminded me of a dog when he begged me for his medicine!"Dad burst out laughing after he was done speaking. The color gradually drained from Mom's face as she listened to his words. She had always been under the impression that Grandpa passed away due

It felt like an entire lifetime had passed since I last returned to the Sharpe residence.Mom and Dad stood at the door anxiously, looking even more prim and proper than when I had returned to the Sharpe residence for the first time. They sighed when they noticed my indifferent expression, looking a little relieved.I smiled when I noticed Angelina standing in the corner, desperately trying to make her presence as small as possible."This is how you've decided to make it up to me?" I asked.Mom and Dad shared an awkward look between themselves before hanging their heads and remaining silent. My smile widened as a mocking look appeared in my eyes.Mom sobbed profusely as she grabbed my hand, saying, "We know that you've endured a lot of hardship, Charlotte. But Angelina has also learned her lesson. Can you please show her mercy? Don't worry. We'll tell her to move out immediately. She'll never show her face in front of you again, okay?"Angelina approached us as she spoke and san

It was as if the people's voices were amplified with a megaphone as their words drilled into my ears. My entire body shook violently. When I whipped my head around, I noticed Angelina standing far away in the corner of my eye with a faintly mocking expression on her face."Hey. Is this you?" a greasy-looking middle-aged man asked as he approached me and threw a card in my face. "I see that you couldn't resist the urge to continue your business even in the hospital. How insatiable are you?"I looked down at the card, freezing in place when I noticed my information printed on it.The middle-aged man looked down his nose at me. "You're still quite pretty even though you've already been toyed with countless times. Tell me. How much for one night—"Someone punched him before he could finish his sentence, causing him to stagger to the floor. A pale and slender hand snatched the card off the floor and tore it to shreds."Get out!"Terence wore a stormy expression on his handsome face. I

"Let me stay by your side, Charlotte," Henry said with a gentle smile, reaching out for me. "Don't worry. However, he told me that everything was alright. He would remove all obstacles and marry me.I believed him, but he ended up breaking his promise.Henry originally planned to announce our wedding plans to everyone during my welcoming party. I looked up at Henry. His eyes were full of regret and sympathy. However, it was too late.It wasn't as if I hadn't begged him to save me in the past. The academy allowed us to call our families at fixed times to inform them that we were safe. I had spent a long time thinking about who to call when I got my first call. In the end, I decided to call Henry, knowing that Mom and Dad wouldn't believe a single word that I said, no matter how much I tried to convince them. That day, I clutched the phone in a death grip and told Henry through tears about all the abuse that I was forced to endure. I hoped that he would be able to save me from the bottomless abyss that I was stuck in.However, he simply scoffed on the other end of the line. "Stop with your schemes, Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe only sent you there to learn the rules. Be good during your time there. Naturally, we'll bring you back once you've learned to behave yourself."He hung up after he was done speaking.Despair ove
