Oh God, he's good looking. I thought with a bit of panic. As if he wasn't already stunning enough, he smiled. “Sorry I disturbed you. All the other tables are occupied. Mind if I join you?” Dimples. “Sure!” I agreed, immediately regretting it. “Thanks”, he said, taking a seat in front of me. Having been married to a man like Declan, I had grown to be able to socialise with strangers. But those were under specific conditions and I was always mentally prepared. There was no way I could have a normal conversation with a man who came from nowhere and not be awkward. In a bid to avoid him, I turned back to admiring the view while sipping my drink. “Beautiful view isn't it?” I simply hummed an agreement. “Everything about this city screams extravagance”, he said. I looked at him. There must be a ‘why do you think so’ on my face, because he continued. “Just look at the buildings from this view. Exaggerated structure. It looks like some sort of a competition if you ask me”, he said. “Really?” I frowned, sitting up. “You don't think so?” He asked, with a small smile playing on his lips. “I don't think it's a competition. Stanton has high standards when it comes to buildings. I mean it's the seat of architecture, you can't expect anything less”. He must be new to the city, else, he would understand that it's more than just a competition. “Hm”, he hummed with a nod, then called the server. “Look, see how that building twists?” I gestured to the one that stood out to me. “Some people might think it's just showing off, but the rotation reduces vortex shedding. The exposed diagrid on the facade is carrying a surprising amount of the load which is why they could get away with those ridiculous overhangs. And if you…” Shit, I’m rambling again. I paused with my hands in the air, watching the unreadable expression on the man’s face. “Sorry”, I said awkwardly, hoping he didn't think I was odd. “No, it's okay”, he shook his head. “Your drink is almost finished”, he pointed out. “Oh, thanks”, I said, before telling the server to get me another one. The man smiled softly at me. “So you're an architect?” He asked. I shook my head. “Em… no. I just studied it in school”, I answered, pushing down the feeling of dejection. “Why didn't you pursue it as a career?” He asked, looking a curious and confused. I shrugged. “I figured out it wasn't for me”, I said quietly, ignoring the sting I felt in my chest. The man clicked his tongue. “That’s a shame”. I furrowed my brows at him. “My friend is also an architect. He can spend hours talking about his work nonstop”, he said with a small smile. “Oh”. “So, do you stay in the hotel?” He asked. “No. I came with a friend”, I answered. His perfect brows slightly drew together. And then he relaxed. “Well it's a good thing he left”, he said casually. I narrowed my eyes at him. “She had an emergency”. His brows rose. “Ohh. Sorry”. He paused. And then, “It will be odd for any man to abandon you on a date”. I gave him a pointed look. Where was he going with that? He looked confused for a moment before his expression turned alarmed. “Oh no… I shouldn't… I’m sorry I assumed your date was a man” “What?” “Or it wasn't a date. I mean women go out all the time. It doesn't always have to be a date”, he rambled. I watched him in confusion. The man bit his lips, looking… embarrassed? “Sorry”, he muttered. And then I laughed at him. It felt good to watch someone other than myself fumble a conversation. “What's funny?” He asked, confused. I shook my head trying to hold back my laugh. And then he smiled. “Glad you find my predicament amusing”. “What about you? Do you stay here?” I asked. “Yes. I’m here for business, actually”, he said, his confidence seeming to return. “That's nice”, I nodded. I looked around, noticing something. And then the idea to tease him struck my mind. “Now that I’m actually looking, there are some empty tables”, I said, raising my brows at him accusingly. His eyes shifted. “Good observation”, he said lowly with an amused smile. “So why did you choose to sit with me?” I asked. “I saw a gorgeous woman sitting alone and decided to take my chances”, he said, his dark eyes on mine. I suddenly became aware again of how attractive he was. Plus, he thought I was gorgeous. My cheeks heated up. “Okay”, I took my drink, looking away. “And I just realised I haven't introduced myself”. I looked at him. “I’m Noah”, he said. “Juliet”, I replied. “Juliet”, he tested, nodding. Just as I was about to dwell on how much I liked the sound of my name in his mouth, it suddenly started to pour. “Shit”, he swore. For something that started too sudden, it was heavy. My clothes were instantly wet. “Let's get out of here”, he said, getting up. Everyone at the rooftop rushed down, while I followed Noah until we were inside the hotel. “Are you good?” He asked. I nodded. And then I noticed his eyes trail down to my chest. I followed his gaze, only to see that my white dress was now see through, revealing my entire cleavage and bra.Juliet Oh God, he's good looking. I thought with a bit of panic. Juliet Just as I was about to give up and go back, the door pulled open, revealing Grace in her nightwear. She frowned at me in concern. “Are you okay?” She asked. “I’m good. I just… couldn't sleep”. After the message I received, I had tossed and turned, unable to think of anything else but Declan. And he was the last person I wanted to occupy my mind. While I was on my phone, I realised Grace had unblocked me, and I texted her impulsively. “Okay. Come in then”. “Thanks”. Grace shut the door behind me, while I walked inside her hotel room. “I’m sorry for bothering you”, I said, turning to Grace. “It's fine”, she said, walking towards her bed where her laptop laid on. “I know you aren't a big fan of movies, but I was just about to watch one. Want to join me?” She asked. I smiled at the fact that she still remembered that I did not have the attention span to watch anything longer ten minutes. “Sure”, I nodded, willing to sit through anything rather than be alone w
JulietSomehow, I was back at the cafe, facing Grace's piercing gaze. After I struggled to hold back from crying, which I had been doing a lot these days, Grace managed to convince me to go back to the cafe with her. “So… how about Naomi and Leah?” I asked, not just because I was trying to shift the conversation from me, but because I was curious about the women I used to call my friends. “Leah left the country to manage her mother's farm a year after graduation”, Grace answered. “And Naomi?”“She died of cancer last year”, Grace replied dryly. “Oh”, was all I could say, wringing my fingers on the table. I could still remember Naomi; bold, reckless and so full of life. A lump formed in my throat, chest tightening with guilt. “Was it Declan?” I looked up at Grace, who had her gaze on the side of my face. I could only sigh, unable to accept or deny the fact that Declan was the one who gave me the bruise. “How long?” She asked with dread. “It’s the first time”, I quickly answe
Juliet I slowly turned to my mother in law. “Provoked him?” I asked lowly, walking towards her. She frowned, taking a step back. “So that gave him the right to fucking hit me?!” I yelled, glowering at her. My hands shook with the urge to hit something. “Well…” she stuttered, shrinking away from me. “If that is the case then maybe I should beat you into a pulp. Because all you have been doing is provoking me”, I threatened. Her eyes widened. “Are you crazy?!” “Of course I am. Your terribly raised son has been driving me insane!” “How dare you say that, you ungrateful brat! I honestly don't know what Declan sees in you. You do not measure up to him in any way. And now you cannot even give him a child. And you think you have the right to complain when you've been nothing but useless?” My eyes burned, muscles tensing as I tried to hold myself back. I would not break. I would not give her that satisfaction. Dorothy Cooper had always been against my marriage to Declan. But he ha
JulietMy hand clenched hard around the device. I scrolled down, vision blurring as I read the chats between Declan and ‘Parker’.Heat burned through my body, rising from my chest until I started to shake. I could barely think. I slowly turned to a peacefully sleeping Declan. And then I saw red. The next second, I was over him, hitting every part of his body my fists could find. “Declan you disgusting asshole! How dare you?!”“What the fuck!” He sprang up. I picked up anything within my reach. Luckily for him, it was a pillow. I continued to hit him, hot tears falling freely as I yelled. “Juliet! What's wrong with you?!” He held me back, pushing me away. My vision and head cleared a little. I looked at him, chest heaving. Breathing to calm myself, I picked up the phone. “What is this?” I asked, pointing the screen at him. The angry and confused expression on his face fell for a moment, and then it was replaced by annoyance. “What were you doing with my phone?” He asked, snat
Juliet I stared at the angry expression on Declan's face, mouth slightly agape. I knew he disliked it when I asked him to follow me to an appointment, but his reaction…“Look, let's not do this now Juliet”, he said sternly. I looked away, blinking back the urge to cry. I heard Declan's tired sigh, before he sat beside me. “I’m sorry for yelling at you”, he said softly. I fingered the duvet, looking down. The way he could go from angry to soft was concerning sometimes. “But you know I don't like it when you bring that up. It's like you don't trust me when I tell you that I am fine”, he added. I looked at him. Maybe it was my fault. Maybe I should not have angered him. “It's fine”, I said quietly. He sighed in relief, nodding. “Alright”, his lips pulled into a small smile as he leaned in to peck me on the cheek. “Before I forget, we will be meeting up with one of my business partners tomorrow night for dinner”, he announced. I blinked at him, then nodded. “I’ll speak with Pr
JulietI looked at the woman I call my mother incredulously. “And you know that I cannot afford to take care of the both of us”. In other words, I would be a burden to her. “And Julian…” she gasped, eyes widening. “Oh my god what will happen to your brother? Declan might not be forgiving enough
JulietMy mind turned blank. Groans and moans filled the air until it was all I could hear. All I could see was Declan sitting on his chair, completely absorbed by the woman kneeling before him. My jaws slackened, as I tried to breathe through the suffocation and tightening in my chest. Muscles w
