Chapter 4

Author: Mini Strength
Lucien’s car pulled out of the underground garage. At the intersection ahead, he saw Avery and her daughter again.

The woman and the little girl walked hand in hand, hurrying beneath the plane trees’ shade.

The child looked about five or six, her hair tied into two little pigtails, the cherry charms on her hair ties glinting faintly in the morning light.

“Lucien, let’s have a daughter in the future, okay? I’ll braid her hair every day, and you’ll take her to preschool every morning. I want her to grow up happy, right by our side.”

“Alright. A daughter who looks like you would be best.”

“No, she should look like Daddy.”

“Looking like me is fine too.”

The memory was like an old wooden chest pried open, dust swirling in a shaft of light.

But then what happened?

Then she bore a daughter for someone else.

Avery walked Ivy to preschool. She stood at the gate and watched her daughter enter the classroom before finally turning away.

Across the street from the preschool, a Cullinan was parked.

At first, Avery thought it belonged to another parent and paid it no mind.

But as she crossed the road, the black Cullinan rolled through a shallow puddle like a silent beast and stopped precisely beside her.

The window lowered slowly. Lucien was sitting in the driver’s seat, his handsome profile edged with coldness in the dim light.

“Lady Walters,” Lucien called out, dragging the words slightly, his tone openly mocking.

“Why are you here?”

“Just passing by.”

If he was merely passing by, Avery had nothing to say.

She took a step to leave when Lucien spoke again. “Your daughter is very pretty.”

Avery’s heart tightened. Why would he suddenly say that?

Had he noticed something?

“My daughter looks pretty because she takes after me. Is that a problem?”

Lucien’s gaze darkened.

Of course her daughter should take after her.

Back then, within miles of the university district, who didn’t know of Avery’s beauty?

Those who had seen her said she carried an undeniable radiance—nothing like the cool glow of moonlight, but more like the blazing sun at the height of summer: vivid, unrestrained, dazzling and open.

When she smiled, it was even more arresting, her eyes curving into bright crescents, dimples faintly showing, lively and effortlessly captivating.

Back then, Avery had been the dream girl in the hearts of countless men.

“I was just complimenting your daughter. Why are you so tense?”

“I’m not tense. Which eye of yours saw me being tense?”

Avery felt uneasy and only wanted to escape Lucien’s gaze as quickly as possible.

Lucien saw she was about to leave again and extended his arm out of the Cullinan’s window, gripping her arm firmly.

“Trying to run again? The Lady Walters who used to cling to me like glue—why do you bolt the moment you see me now?”

His fingers were like iron clamps.

Even through the thin fabric, Avery could clearly feel the strength of his knuckles and the heat of his palm.

The Cullinan was far too eye-catching. People around them kept glancing over.

“Lucien, this is my daughter’s kindergarten. What exactly are you trying to do, pulling me like this right outside the school?”

“Nothing much. I’m just letting you know that I don’t accept your apology from yesterday.”

As he spoke, his hand suddenly tightened.

Caught off guard, Avery was slammed against the driver’s door.

Lucien pressed a hand to the back of her neck and leaned slightly out of the window, murmuring by her ear, “And one more thing, Lady Walters, you don’t get to say we’re even.”

As soon as the words fell, he released her without warning.

With the force gone, Avery lost her balance and fell straight to the ground.

She was utterly humiliated.

The Cullinan’s engine let out a low growl and sped away, leaving her sitting there alone, swallowing a mouthful of dust.

Avery cursed, “Lucien, damn you!”

Was he insane? Picking a fight with her first thing in the morning!

The next day, Avery was still vomiting nonstop. Something felt wrong. When she tested herself, she realized she was already pregnant. She had planned to quietly terminate the pregnancy, but Henry found out. He threatened her, insisting she had to keep the child. He needed an heir to silence public scrutiny, and he also needed a secret to hold over her, something that would force her to help him hide his impotence.“That bastard,” Sophie snapped. “He can throw punches at a woman without hesitation, yet that part of him doesn’t work at all. His genes really hardened in all the wrong places.“What’s meant to get hard is dead weight, but the only thing that ever stiffens up on him is his fist when he’s hitting a woman.”After venting, she squeezed Avery’s hand. “Don’t worry, Ave. I’ll never say a word.”“Thank you, Sophie.”“Why are you thanking me? It’s just that there’s no solid proof of Henry’s abuse, and he has no other women either. What kind of leverage can you even use against h

Lucien had been busy all afternoon. After the meeting ended, he saw the transfer and the note on his phone, and his face darkened instantly.Car fare.So that was what it was.Was Avery treating him like a chauffeur now?Avery returned home to find that Sophie had already sent Ivy to kindergarten.“Ave, you’re back. I was just about to go to the hospital to see you.” Sophie was holding a thermos of freshly made soup. If Avery had come back three minutes later, they would have missed each other.“How did you know I was hospitalized?”“You didn’t come home last night, so I called you. Lucien answered. He said you had a mild concussion and lost consciousness, and you were in the hospital.”“Lucien answered?”“Yes. I was surprised too. Why would Lucien be with you in the middle of the night?” Sophie winked at Avery. “Don’t tell me he stayed with you all night?”That…No way.He already treated her as if she didn’t exist. How could he have stayed by her side all night?“Sophie, let’s not

Avery jolted awake from the nightmare, her chest tight as she hurried to sit up, struggling to steady her breathing.“Miss Walters, you’re awake.” A stranger’s voice sounded beside her.Avery turned her head and saw a young man standing by the window. He wore a sharp, well-fitted suit. When he saw her awake, he quickly walked over to her.“Would you like me to call a doctor?”“And you are?”“Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself.” He smiled politely. “My name is Desmond Slater. I’m Mr. Holmes’s assistant. He had some urgent matters to deal with at the firm, so he asked me to stay here and take you home once you wake up and feel well enough.”That sentence echoed in Avery’s ears again: Six years ago, she stopped existing in my world. The night before, she had briefly regained consciousness and happened to hear Lucien say those words. His voice was cold and restrained, pulling her back into an endless darkness once again.Because of it, she had spent the entire night trapped in nightma

Outside, Henry had been about to kick the door. When it suddenly opened, his leg froze midair.Lucien swept his gaze over Henry and the two men behind him holding up their phones, apparently recording. “Gentlemen, you’re making quite a disturbance outside my room. May I ask what this is about?”Henry hadn’t expected the door to be opened by such a composed, imposing man. More importantly, there was none of the panic one would expect from someone about to be ‘caught in the act.’“I’m looking for my wife!” Henry craned his neck to peer inside the room and shouted, “Avery, I know you’re in there. Get out here right now!”That wasn’t enough for him; he even tried to push his way inside.Lucien lifted an arm and blocked him.“Mr. Hunt, entering my room without my consent constitutes a violation of the law.”Henry narrowed his eyes and sized Lucien up again. “You know who I am?”“We met briefly at last year’s Global Business Summit in Westin.”That summit wasn’t something just anyone could

Avery woke up again to find herself in an unfamiliar room. Her head throbbed, her eyelids so heavy she could barely lift them. After a long while, her blurred vision slowly came into focus. It was an exceptionally spacious room. A massive oil painting hung above the headboard. The ceiling was plain, with a ring of concealed lighting set into the molding, currently switched off. A minimalist chandelier hung at the center, coldly reflecting the light spilling out from the bathroom.Dark gray curtains were drawn tightly shut, cutting off all outside light and making it impossible to tell whether it was day or night.Avery sat up in bed. The moment the blanket slid down, she realized she wasn’t wearing any clothes. What she had been wearing earlier had been stripped off and tossed messily onto the floor.Thankfully, the sheets were neat, and aside from the pounding in her head, she felt no other discomfort. She leaned forward, about to reach for the clothes on the floor, when she heard

After returning from the kindergarten, Avery began contacting lawyers again. To avoid Lucien, she deliberately steered clear of all divorce attorneys affiliated with Arclight. But after making the rounds, she realized that none of the well-known firms in Harbor City were willing to take her case. That made sense. Henry’s father was the city’s mayor—powerful and well-connected. No lawyer would risk offending the Hunt family over the fees from a divorce case.Avery spent the entire day on the phone. It was only by evening that she finally reached a female lawyer named Linda Steward from Northstar Law Firm. Linda said she was willing to take the case. They agreed to meet that evening at Westcourt Lounge. The location was chosen by Linda, who said it was quiet there. After entrusting Ivy to Sophie, Avery took a cab to the appointment.By the time she arrived, Linda was already there.“Miss Walters, that must have been a tiring trip. Have some tea to warm yourself up,” Linda said with
