Chapter 3

Author: Mini Strength
Avery couldn’t sleep.

There had already been too much weighing on her mind, and Lucien’s sudden reappearance only made it worse.

Around three or four in the morning, she dozed off for a short while, only to be woken again by the early alarm.

After turning it off, Avery went into the bathroom to wash up and put on makeup to cover her injuries. Once she was done, she went to wake Ivy.

“Mommy, why have you been wearing a hat and sunglasses these past few days?” Ivy asked curiously.

“Because I had a cosmetic treatment. The doctor said I need to keep my face fully covered so it can heal faster.”

The night Henry hurt her, Ivy had already fallen asleep and hadn’t seen anything.

Avery was grateful for that. If possible, she hoped her daughter would never have to go through something so traumatic.

“But Mommy is already beautiful. You don’t need cosmetic treatments.” Ivy wrapped her arms around Avery’s neck. “In Ivy’s heart, Mommy is the most beautiful mother.”

A warmth spread through Avery’s chest.

Ivy had always been well-behaved and thoughtful.

Her birth had healed Avery’s once-shattered heart. After cruelly pushing Avery into darkness, fate had shown mercy and given her this child as redemption.

“Thank you for the compliment, sweetheart. In my heart, you’re the most beautiful baby too. Come on, let’s get ready for kindergarten, okay?”

“Okay.”

Avery kissed her daughter and led her to get changed and wash up.

After breakfast, the two chatted as they went out into the corridor to wait for the elevator.

The moment the elevator doors opened, Avery froze. Lucien was standing inside.

He was dressed in a perfectly tailored dark gray suit, the crisp white collar of his shirt framing his sharp jawline.

He radiated a calm, commanding presence simply standing there.

Avery tightened her grip on Ivy’s shoulder.

Why was Lucien here?

Did he live in this building too?

No, probably not. Although Sophie’s place had been positioned as mid-to-high-end housing when it was first developed, the complex was older now and the facilities somewhat dated.

With Lucien’s current status and standing, he surely had better options.

Their eyes met.

Lucien gave Avery only a brief glance before quickly looking away, his gaze lingering for not even a second.

“Mommy, aren’t we going in?” Ivy looked up at Avery.

“Y-yes… let’s go in.”

Avery pulled Ivy into the elevator. The cabin was spacious, yet she deliberately guided Ivy into the farthest corner from Lucien, using her body to shield her daughter’s face.

The elevator descended, the numbers ticking down slowly, every second stretching like an eternity.

Avery even held her breath, but in truth, Lucien never once looked at Ivy.

Of course. He despised her.

Why would he pay attention to her child?

Just as Avery finally relaxed, the rainbow bouncy ball Ivy was playing with slipped from her hands and rolled to Lucien’s feet.

“Mommy, my rainbow ball! My rainbow ball fell!”

Avery froze.

It was always the very thing she feared most.

Ivy’s hand reached out from the narrow gap between Avery’s arms, trying to grab it, but she couldn’t reach that far.

Lucien glanced down, bent over, picked up the ball, and handed it back to Ivy.

As she watched his large hand brush against her daughter’s small one, cold sweat broke out across Avery’s back.

Even their hands looked so alike.

“Thank you, mister.” Ivy smiled sweetly at Lucien.

Lucien nodded once, his expression blank, almost mechanical.

Ivy was about to say something else when Avery quickly reached out and covered her mouth.

Finally, the elevator reached the first floor. The soft ding sounded like salvation.

Lucien stood near the front, but since he was headed to the underground garage, he remained where he was.

Avery wrapped an arm around Ivy, turned sideways, brushed past Lucien, and bolted out of the elevator as if fleeing.

The elevator doors slid shut again and continued downward.

Ivy looked back once and asked softly, “Mommy, was that man we met in the elevator a bad person?”

“Why would you think that, Ivy?”

“Because you kept blocking me just now, and your palm was all sweaty.”

Only then did Avery realize that her child had sensed her tension.

“No, Ivy. That man isn’t a bad person. He’s just a stranger. Mommy has told you before that we should keep a certain distance from strangers, right?”

“Right. But if he was just an ordinary stranger, why were you so nervous?”

“I was just… just worried you’d be late. Come on, come on, if we keep talking, you’ll be late for kindergarten.”

Ivy’s attention shifted immediately. “I don’t want to be late. I want my gold star!”

The next day, Avery was still vomiting nonstop. Something felt wrong. When she tested herself, she realized she was already pregnant. She had planned to quietly terminate the pregnancy, but Henry found out. He threatened her, insisting she had to keep the child. He needed an heir to silence public scrutiny, and he also needed a secret to hold over her, something that would force her to help him hide his impotence.“That bastard,” Sophie snapped. “He can throw punches at a woman without hesitation, yet that part of him doesn’t work at all. His genes really hardened in all the wrong places.“What’s meant to get hard is dead weight, but the only thing that ever stiffens up on him is his fist when he’s hitting a woman.”After venting, she squeezed Avery’s hand. “Don’t worry, Ave. I’ll never say a word.”“Thank you, Sophie.”“Why are you thanking me? It’s just that there’s no solid proof of Henry’s abuse, and he has no other women either. What kind of leverage can you even use against h

Lucien had been busy all afternoon. After the meeting ended, he saw the transfer and the note on his phone, and his face darkened instantly.Car fare.So that was what it was.Was Avery treating him like a chauffeur now?Avery returned home to find that Sophie had already sent Ivy to kindergarten.“Ave, you’re back. I was just about to go to the hospital to see you.” Sophie was holding a thermos of freshly made soup. If Avery had come back three minutes later, they would have missed each other.“How did you know I was hospitalized?”“You didn’t come home last night, so I called you. Lucien answered. He said you had a mild concussion and lost consciousness, and you were in the hospital.”“Lucien answered?”“Yes. I was surprised too. Why would Lucien be with you in the middle of the night?” Sophie winked at Avery. “Don’t tell me he stayed with you all night?”That…No way.He already treated her as if she didn’t exist. How could he have stayed by her side all night?“Sophie, let’s not

Avery jolted awake from the nightmare, her chest tight as she hurried to sit up, struggling to steady her breathing.“Miss Walters, you’re awake.” A stranger’s voice sounded beside her.Avery turned her head and saw a young man standing by the window. He wore a sharp, well-fitted suit. When he saw her awake, he quickly walked over to her.“Would you like me to call a doctor?”“And you are?”“Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself.” He smiled politely. “My name is Desmond Slater. I’m Mr. Holmes’s assistant. He had some urgent matters to deal with at the firm, so he asked me to stay here and take you home once you wake up and feel well enough.”That sentence echoed in Avery’s ears again: Six years ago, she stopped existing in my world. The night before, she had briefly regained consciousness and happened to hear Lucien say those words. His voice was cold and restrained, pulling her back into an endless darkness once again.Because of it, she had spent the entire night trapped in nightma

Outside, Henry had been about to kick the door. When it suddenly opened, his leg froze midair.Lucien swept his gaze over Henry and the two men behind him holding up their phones, apparently recording. “Gentlemen, you’re making quite a disturbance outside my room. May I ask what this is about?”Henry hadn’t expected the door to be opened by such a composed, imposing man. More importantly, there was none of the panic one would expect from someone about to be ‘caught in the act.’“I’m looking for my wife!” Henry craned his neck to peer inside the room and shouted, “Avery, I know you’re in there. Get out here right now!”That wasn’t enough for him; he even tried to push his way inside.Lucien lifted an arm and blocked him.“Mr. Hunt, entering my room without my consent constitutes a violation of the law.”Henry narrowed his eyes and sized Lucien up again. “You know who I am?”“We met briefly at last year’s Global Business Summit in Westin.”That summit wasn’t something just anyone could

Avery woke up again to find herself in an unfamiliar room. Her head throbbed, her eyelids so heavy she could barely lift them. After a long while, her blurred vision slowly came into focus. It was an exceptionally spacious room. A massive oil painting hung above the headboard. The ceiling was plain, with a ring of concealed lighting set into the molding, currently switched off. A minimalist chandelier hung at the center, coldly reflecting the light spilling out from the bathroom.Dark gray curtains were drawn tightly shut, cutting off all outside light and making it impossible to tell whether it was day or night.Avery sat up in bed. The moment the blanket slid down, she realized she wasn’t wearing any clothes. What she had been wearing earlier had been stripped off and tossed messily onto the floor.Thankfully, the sheets were neat, and aside from the pounding in her head, she felt no other discomfort. She leaned forward, about to reach for the clothes on the floor, when she heard

After returning from the kindergarten, Avery began contacting lawyers again. To avoid Lucien, she deliberately steered clear of all divorce attorneys affiliated with Arclight. But after making the rounds, she realized that none of the well-known firms in Harbor City were willing to take her case. That made sense. Henry’s father was the city’s mayor—powerful and well-connected. No lawyer would risk offending the Hunt family over the fees from a divorce case.Avery spent the entire day on the phone. It was only by evening that she finally reached a female lawyer named Linda Steward from Northstar Law Firm. Linda said she was willing to take the case. They agreed to meet that evening at Westcourt Lounge. The location was chosen by Linda, who said it was quiet there. After entrusting Ivy to Sophie, Avery took a cab to the appointment.By the time she arrived, Linda was already there.“Miss Walters, that must have been a tiring trip. Have some tea to warm yourself up,” Linda said with
