Chapter 4

Author: Make maney
Charles didn't come home that night.

He turned up at noon the next day, wearing a different shirt from the one he'd left in.

Wherever he'd slept, he had clothes there.

His eyes were dark and menacing as he slammed the door.

"Nova, that was classless."

I kept eating my pasta and didn't answer. He came over and slammed a hand down on the table.

"I'm talking to you. Didn't you hear me?

"What is wrong with you? You cook for yourself now, like I'm not even here."

I glanced up at him.

"You weren't home. Who was I supposed to cook for?"

That shut him up. Then he snorted. "Is this your way of getting my attention, Nova? Stop being so childish."

I put down my fork and wiped my mouth.

"I don't need your attention."

"Why do you always have that miserable look on your face?"

Charles pounded his fist on the table.

"I did you a favor by taking you last night, and you ruined the whole thing. Vivian kept crying. Did you even know that?"

I shrugged.

"No. You'd obviously know better than I would."

"Enough!"

He pointed a finger at me. "You're going to apologize to Vivian. Now."

I refused. "No. Why would I apologize?"

Charles felt an irritation he couldn't put into words.

He didn't know what had gotten into me. He just had the feeling that something had slipped completely out of his control.

He forced himself to calm down.

"I'm sailing the Caribbean at the end of the month. Isn't that what you've always wanted, the islands and the beaches?

"This is your best chance. I'll take you, but only if you apologize to Vivian first. It's the trip she's been looking forward to most, and I'm offering you the chance to go."

My heart lurched.

I'd thought he couldn't hurt me anymore. His words still hit hard enough to knock the air out of me.

That was the place I'd wanted to see most, the route Charles had sailed on his first trip as captain.

He'd been so excited as he held me.

"Nova, I'm finally sailing as captain. That route has the most beautiful views. When I get the chance, I'll take you with me!"

I'd never forgotten a word of it.

He clearly hadn't forgotten either. He'd just turned it into a bargaining chip to make me back down.

When I said nothing, Charles sounded even more agitated.

"I'm talking to you. Are you going to answer me?

"Who knows when I'll sail that route again? Don't push your luck. I've already given you a chance."

I looked up at him calmly.

"I don't want it."

Charles blinked, as if he hadn't heard me.

"Say that again?"

I took a breath and spoke more steadily this time. "I said I'm not going. Take whoever you want."

Charles's claws came out, and he slammed his fist into the floor, cracking it.

"Then tell me what you want!

"I ask, and you won't tell me. I offer, and you won't accept. Nova, don't test my patience. You can't handle the consequences!"

"Can't I?"

I laughed.

"What are you going to do, Captain? I'd love to hear what consequences you think I can't handle."

He pointed a finger in my face.

His finger shook with anger, and I could hear his teeth grinding. He stood there pointing at me for a long moment, unable to get a word out.

Then he turned and stormed out. I'd gotten to him.

Even so, I felt nothing. Charles no longer had any power over my emotions.

The end of the month came quickly.

It was the time we'd set aside, one of the rare chances for us to be alone together.

This time, I was the one backing out.

I took my suitcase down to a cab and got to the terminal early. I got through security and customs without a hitch.

Then an Instagram notification popped up. I opened it. Vivian again.

A selfie on a dock. Behind her, a tall figure with his back to the camera leaned against the railing with a glass of red wine.

The caption said:

"You told me you'd show me the most beautiful view there is. You kept your word, my captain."

A pale band of skin stood out on his ring finger.

It was Charles.

He'd taken off his moonstone ring and gone to sea with Vivian.

The view, the two of them leaning together, the sweet caption. It all fit perfectly.

It struck me as funny. They were so well matched that fate should have paired them instead.

So much for his offer to take me sailing if I apologized.

All he'd ever wanted was the apology. Taking me was never going to happen.

He already had someone beside him. That place had never been mine.

I picked up my key card, changed into something comfortable, and went up on deck.

The ship pulled away, and a sun-warmed breeze brushed my face.

Schools of fish scattered below me, and I smiled and waved goodbye to them.

Charles was with the woman he'd chosen. I had an ocean of my own now.

Ten years. He and I were officially finished.

My father poured me a glass of red wine."It's over now. You're yourself again. It's time to go out and clear your head."If you don't want to go alone, I can send the finest wolf we have with you."I turned him down. "Dad, I want to see the Alps, the shores of Lake Baikal, and the Coral Sea. I want to go alone and experience the world's most beautiful landscapes."And that's what I did.I saw the most beautiful clouds from a plane window, felt the warmest sea breeze on a ship's deck, and climbed to the tops of the highest peaks.I shifted and ran through the jungle, surrounded by the humid heat of the rainforest. It felt as if I'd returned to the earliest days of our kind. The last I ever heard about Charles came from my father. He'd suffered several times more than I had. Maybe it hurt me less because I'd let go earlier. His sight came back, but he still shifted without warning. He frightened a human child on board, and somebody filed a complaint.Vivian had already found herself ano

I turned my back on him."This is my home, and I'm not going anywhere. You're the one who's leaving. Go far away, and don't come back. I never want to see you again."I went inside and shut the door. Charles stood outside it the entire night. It was chilly when I went out the next morning. Charles was shivering but still refused to leave."Nova, we can't just separate like this."Severing a mate bond would put us both through terrible pain. We could lose our wolves. It's dangerous."He tried to move toward me on stiff legs, but one disgusted look from me stopped him in his tracks."Instead of putting us both through that, give me the chance to make up for what I did."Nova, I know I was wrong. I promise we'll be happy from now on!"I scoffed."Could it possibly hurt more than staying with you?"I'll endure any amount of pain if it means I'm free of you."Charles stared at me as if my words had struck him. Then my father came out."You have Alpha blood. You know that with the Alpha King

(Nova’s POV)When my father finished playing the footage of Charles, I was perfectly calm. It was like watching a movie about people I didn't know."Tell me what you're thinking, Nova."My father watched me, his face serious."Do you still want to be with him?"I shook my head."I haven't wanted that for a long time. If you hadn't shown me any of this, I'd have almost forgotten he existed. I left to cut every last tie between us."I looked out at the water and smiled."Because I've realized I can do all of this without him. I can enjoy the ocean as much as I want without seeing it through his eyes."My father nodded and pointed toward the door."Then you have my consent to end the bond. Would you like me to throw him out for you?"I looked outside. Charles stood there with the wind tugging at his coat, making him look even more worn down.He was crying and laughing at the same time."Nova, I came to take you home."I didn't even know how to respond. Just listening to him was exhausting

The realization hit Charles like a blow.He remembered. When the smart lock was installed, the skin on Nova's fingers had been peeling because of the change in seasons. The scanner couldn't read her fingerprint. He'd told her to use a key until her fingers healed. They could register her fingerprint then. He hadn't given her the code, either. Then he'd forgotten all about it.For years, Nova had carried that heavy ring of keys, while he'd handed Vivian the code without a second thought. He pounded his fist against the floor and roared, "Get out! Get out of here, get out of my house!"Vivian jumped back."Charles, what's gotten into you?""I said get out. This is not your home, and I don't want to see you here again!"Tears spilled down her face. He'd never spoken to her like that. He had always been gentle with her."Charles, why are you yelling at me?"You're the one who insisted on registering my fingerprint. Nova was standing right there. You laughed at her for not taking care of he

When he stopped howling, Charles hauled Daniel off his feet."My wife leaves, and you don't tell me!"Daniel went pale and managed to speak. "You're the one who said I didn't need to report anything about Mrs. Hale to you anymore..."Charles's face froze. It was true. After Nova refused to apologize to Vivian, he had been furious. On his way out, he'd given Daniel an order. "That woman is impossible. She can't keep sulking forever. From now on, don't tell me anything about her. I don't want to know!"That was how he'd been able to take Vivian to the Caribbean without a care. How he'd brought her aboard a ship he'd never once taken Nova on.Charles let go. Daniel coughed several times, then spoke carefully. "I thought Mrs. Hale had gone to meet you. Didn't you say you were taking her on the Caribbean run?"The words cut straight through him.Right. Except the offer had only ever been a way to make Nova give in to Vivian. The spot beside him on that deck had never been meant for Nova.No

  • I Left My Cheating Mate, He Begged for Forgiveness   Chapter 6

(Third person’s POV)The day Nova left, Charles and Vivian checked into the most luxurious hotel in Mexico. He took a photo of the room, opened his WhatsApp chat with Nova, and tapped send.Only one gray check mark appeared. The photo hadn't been delivered. Nova had blocked him."Huh?"Charles frowned at the screen and figured the signal was bad.He walked around the room and tried sending the photo again and again. Each attempt showed the same single check mark.Vivian came over in a bathrobe, towel-drying her hair."Charles, why are you still on your phone? You promised we'd go out and enjoy the sea breeze tonight."Charles set his phone facedown and murmured a distracted yes.He wasn't especially worried. He assumed Nova had blocked him because she was still angry.Still, something about it didn't sit right with him. After all, in ten years, no matter how bad their fights got, Nova had always been the first to apologize. She had never cut him off before. He thought all it took to ma
