Chapter 3

Author: Make maney
We left things on a sour note that day.

Over the next two days, I cleared out the things I didn't need anymore, a little at a time.

Charles and I were under the same roof, but for once, I wasn't clinging to him the way I used to.

He didn't notice how busy I was. If anything, he liked me better this way.

"This is nice, actually. Quiet. I can finally get some rest."

The message was clear. Before this, I'd been disturbing his rest.

He took his time pulling a sandwich out of the fridge, frowning at it.

"Are you going to cook or not? I'm hungry."

I tossed a sausage to him without looking up.

"I'm on my period and I don't feel like cooking. Figure it out."

He opened his mouth, then thought better of it. As he turned away, he muttered, "What's with her lately? This isn't cute at all."

I laughed bitterly to myself. Once, even with a 104-degree fever, I'd dragged myself around the kitchen to make him a full dinner just so we could eat together.

He never cared. He took everything I did for granted.

The day I stopped, I wasn't cute anymore.

And Vivian?

She didn't have to do a thing and she was still adorable to him.

"Nova," Charles called through a mouthful of sandwich.

"The crew's getting together tonight. Come with me."

I turned and stared at him.

"You're taking me? Are you sure?"

He'd never taken me to one of these before. His excuse was that everyone on the crew was single, and the two of us showing up together would look like we were rubbing it in.

"I'm sure."

He nodded.

"Vivian's in town for a few more days. She's been getting along great with everybody, and she said she'd like to meet you."

So that was it.

I only got to come because Vivian wanted to meet me.

Before we left, Charles made a point of sliding the moonstone ring off his finger and into his pocket. He caught me watching and explained casually, "They're all single. I have to think about their feelings."

I nodded and took mine off too.

Charles studied my face for a long moment, then smiled, satisfied.

"Good. You're being reasonable about this."

Bitterness spread through my chest.

In all those years, he had hardly ever praised me for anything.

The most sincere compliment he'd ever given me was for taking off the ring that marked me as his mate. How ironic.

At the restaurant, Vivian opened her arms to hug me.

"Hi, Nova! So good to finally meet you."

I stepped back without drawing attention to it, leaving her arms to close around empty air.

"You too."

The private room went still for a second.

Charles poked me in the back.

"Don't be rude. Don't embarrass me."

When we ordered, Charles gave the server specific instructions. "No peppercorn sauce on the steak."

He pointed at Vivian.

"She doesn't like it. Red wine sauce instead. For dessert, bring her that chocolate mousse you're famous for, and go easy on the cream."

The server wrote it all down, then looked at me.

"And the lady here?"

Vivian and I were the only women there. The server assumed Charles was being a gentleman and asked about my preferences too.

Charles hesitated for a beat and closed the menu.

"Whatever. She's not picky."

The room had been loud a second ago. Now nobody was saying anything.

Everyone watched me with guarded, uncomfortable expressions.

Charles noticed the tension and cleared his throat.

"Bring her the seafood soup."

The server wrote it down and left.

Vivian propped her chin on her hand and beamed at me.

"You're so lucky, Nova. Men as thoughtful as Charles are hard to find."

One of their coworkers jumped in to tease her. "You're the one who's been lucky these past few days. At the hotel and on the ship, our captain has personally arranged all your meals!"

"Right? When you caught a cold at sea last month, he spent a fortune on a designer jacket for you at the ship's duty-free shop."

Vivian glowed as she sat there soaking it all up.

Even Charles smiled a little and gave Vivian an affectionate look.

That was when I remembered the call he'd taken before his last trip.

The jacket Vivian had been asking about. So that was where it came from.

I had to laugh at myself a little.

When I was accidentally poisoned with wolfsbane, all Charles did was tell me to see a healer.

"Why are you telling me this? Werewolves are tough. Just take some herbs for the wolfsbane.

"I don't have any herbs on me. If you won't see a healer, go sit in the moonlight. Crying about it doesn't fix anything."

So a werewolf didn't always have to be that tough.

For Vivian, one cold breeze was enough to earn her a jacket.

Vivian cut into her steak and went on. "You two have been together so long, Nova. Has Charles always been this thoughtful? You're so lucky."

She sounded envious, with just a hint of disappointment underneath.

I set down my knife and fork and dabbed my mouth.

"My arms and legs work just fine. I can take care of myself."

My sarcasm was obvious. Vivian froze for a moment, and her voice grew tearful. "Nova, I'm only saying I wish I had a mate as good as yours. Why do you have to be so harsh...?"

Charles threw his silverware down on his plate with a sharp clatter.

"Nova, that's enough. Don't ruin the evening!"

I tilted my head.

"You think this is going well?"

Charles nodded.

"It was fine. They're just jealous of our marriage. What do you have to be angry about?"

"Jealous, are they?"

I looked at Vivian.

"If you're that jealous, you can have him."

I stood to go. Charles reached the door first and braced it shut, his eyes blazing red.

"Nova, I warned you."

I put a hand on him and pushed him away from the door.

"Message received. Can I go now?"

I didn't wait for an answer. I opened the door and walked out.

Outside the restaurant, I let out a breath.

Ten years, and that was the first time I'd said what I thought without worrying about how it made Charles look.

For the first time, I felt like my own person.

My father poured me a glass of red wine."It's over now. You're yourself again. It's time to go out and clear your head."If you don't want to go alone, I can send the finest wolf we have with you."I turned him down. "Dad, I want to see the Alps, the shores of Lake Baikal, and the Coral Sea. I want to go alone and experience the world's most beautiful landscapes."And that's what I did.I saw the most beautiful clouds from a plane window, felt the warmest sea breeze on a ship's deck, and climbed to the tops of the highest peaks.I shifted and ran through the jungle, surrounded by the humid heat of the rainforest. It felt as if I'd returned to the earliest days of our kind. The last I ever heard about Charles came from my father. He'd suffered several times more than I had. Maybe it hurt me less because I'd let go earlier. His sight came back, but he still shifted without warning. He frightened a human child on board, and somebody filed a complaint.Vivian had already found herself ano

I turned my back on him."This is my home, and I'm not going anywhere. You're the one who's leaving. Go far away, and don't come back. I never want to see you again."I went inside and shut the door. Charles stood outside it the entire night. It was chilly when I went out the next morning. Charles was shivering but still refused to leave."Nova, we can't just separate like this."Severing a mate bond would put us both through terrible pain. We could lose our wolves. It's dangerous."He tried to move toward me on stiff legs, but one disgusted look from me stopped him in his tracks."Instead of putting us both through that, give me the chance to make up for what I did."Nova, I know I was wrong. I promise we'll be happy from now on!"I scoffed."Could it possibly hurt more than staying with you?"I'll endure any amount of pain if it means I'm free of you."Charles stared at me as if my words had struck him. Then my father came out."You have Alpha blood. You know that with the Alpha King

(Nova’s POV)When my father finished playing the footage of Charles, I was perfectly calm. It was like watching a movie about people I didn't know."Tell me what you're thinking, Nova."My father watched me, his face serious."Do you still want to be with him?"I shook my head."I haven't wanted that for a long time. If you hadn't shown me any of this, I'd have almost forgotten he existed. I left to cut every last tie between us."I looked out at the water and smiled."Because I've realized I can do all of this without him. I can enjoy the ocean as much as I want without seeing it through his eyes."My father nodded and pointed toward the door."Then you have my consent to end the bond. Would you like me to throw him out for you?"I looked outside. Charles stood there with the wind tugging at his coat, making him look even more worn down.He was crying and laughing at the same time."Nova, I came to take you home."I didn't even know how to respond. Just listening to him was exhausting

The realization hit Charles like a blow.He remembered. When the smart lock was installed, the skin on Nova's fingers had been peeling because of the change in seasons. The scanner couldn't read her fingerprint. He'd told her to use a key until her fingers healed. They could register her fingerprint then. He hadn't given her the code, either. Then he'd forgotten all about it.For years, Nova had carried that heavy ring of keys, while he'd handed Vivian the code without a second thought. He pounded his fist against the floor and roared, "Get out! Get out of here, get out of my house!"Vivian jumped back."Charles, what's gotten into you?""I said get out. This is not your home, and I don't want to see you here again!"Tears spilled down her face. He'd never spoken to her like that. He had always been gentle with her."Charles, why are you yelling at me?"You're the one who insisted on registering my fingerprint. Nova was standing right there. You laughed at her for not taking care of he

When he stopped howling, Charles hauled Daniel off his feet."My wife leaves, and you don't tell me!"Daniel went pale and managed to speak. "You're the one who said I didn't need to report anything about Mrs. Hale to you anymore..."Charles's face froze. It was true. After Nova refused to apologize to Vivian, he had been furious. On his way out, he'd given Daniel an order. "That woman is impossible. She can't keep sulking forever. From now on, don't tell me anything about her. I don't want to know!"That was how he'd been able to take Vivian to the Caribbean without a care. How he'd brought her aboard a ship he'd never once taken Nova on.Charles let go. Daniel coughed several times, then spoke carefully. "I thought Mrs. Hale had gone to meet you. Didn't you say you were taking her on the Caribbean run?"The words cut straight through him.Right. Except the offer had only ever been a way to make Nova give in to Vivian. The spot beside him on that deck had never been meant for Nova.No

  • I Left My Cheating Mate, He Begged for Forgiveness   Chapter 6

(Third person’s POV)The day Nova left, Charles and Vivian checked into the most luxurious hotel in Mexico. He took a photo of the room, opened his WhatsApp chat with Nova, and tapped send.Only one gray check mark appeared. The photo hadn't been delivered. Nova had blocked him."Huh?"Charles frowned at the screen and figured the signal was bad.He walked around the room and tried sending the photo again and again. Each attempt showed the same single check mark.Vivian came over in a bathrobe, towel-drying her hair."Charles, why are you still on your phone? You promised we'd go out and enjoy the sea breeze tonight."Charles set his phone facedown and murmured a distracted yes.He wasn't especially worried. He assumed Nova had blocked him because she was still angry.Still, something about it didn't sit right with him. After all, in ten years, no matter how bad their fights got, Nova had always been the first to apologize. She had never cut him off before. He thought all it took to ma
