Chapter 9

Evie woke up at first light. Her face was cold but the rest of her body under the sleeping bag was comfortably warm. With disorientation she remembered having trembled with cold the previous evening and then she recalled Ethan getting to her side to warm her up. She felt so warm as if he was still lying by her side. But she couldn’t feel his body anywhere near. She opened her eyes carefully and saw him bustling about the fire. She lay motionless for some time savoring the memory of the previous night, regretting that it was over so soon. He must have looked at her and noticed she was awake for Evie heard him say:

‘I didn’t want to wake you. Do you want coffee?’
