Chapter 3

Author: Harper
Early the next morning, Dad's butler called.

"Ms. Harper, your father's been having trouble breathing. The ambulance just took him to the hospital."

I was out the door before I'd even finished buttoning my coat. With my right hand injured, I couldn't drive, so Sophia drove me. The whole way there, Dad's family doctor kept us updated. His heart rhythm was irregular, and the strain on it was getting worse fast. He'd need to be admitted for more evaluation.

When I got to the hospital, Dad was in the monitored unit, hooked up to an IV.

The first thing he saw was the splint on my hand, and the first thing he said was, "What happened to you?"

"I tripped and fell."

He looked at me. He clearly didn't believe it, but he didn't press. He just motioned for me to sit. We held hands over the bed rail, and his palm wasn't as warm as it used to be.

The attending doctor said a specialist would need to evaluate him for surgery. If we wanted to move him to a hospital with better rehabilitation services, we'd have to wait until his condition was stable. We couldn't rush it.

I remembered Noah knew a lot of cardiologists. I was about to pick up my phone when I saw him walking toward me from the other end of the hallway.

I started toward him, but then his phone rang.

"Claire? Are you feeling sick again?"

Noah turned toward the stairwell. He listened for a moment, and his voice instantly softened. "Don't be scared. I'll be right there."

In that moment, I decided not to call out to him.

I went back to the room and asked the doctor to connect me directly with the admissions office. At the same time, I contacted Emily to confirm where the healthcare proxy documents were kept.

At noon, Claire posted a photo of her breakfast on social media. On the table were Noah's cuff links and a coffee mug I knew all too well. She messaged me, "Hey, Evelyn, you already hit me yesterday. You're not going to come after me again today, are you?"

I took a screenshot for evidence and contacted the building management to revoke everyone's access to the private areas except mine. I had Emily file a formal complaint about security hurting me, too. At first, I also reached out to a private investigator to dig up Claire's real medical history.

When my future self heard words like "contact" and "investigate" on the phone, she suddenly grabbed her head and screamed like she'd lost her mind.

"No! That's exactly what happened last time! She vanished into thin air, and Noah swore we'd kidnapped her, and Dad..."

Her words broke off, and her charred face twisted in pain.

I told the investigator to pull only public records and never to follow, corner, or contact Claire. After I hung up, I found my future self curled up against the wall, as if she'd narrowly escaped disaster.

At 11 that night, Noah stormed into the waiting area outside Dad's room.

"Where's Claire?"

I looked up at him. "You're asking me?"

He slammed his phone down on the table. It was playing a clip of parking garage footage that showed Emily's assistant talking with Grant, the head of security. The clip had been edited, the beginning and end trimmed off, and there was no sound.

"Her phone's last location was right around here," Noah said. "Yesterday you said you wanted her gone. Now she's missing. Did you have someone take her?"

"That's my lawyer's assistant. She was there to handle the complaint about security hurting me."

"You expect me to believe that's a coincidence?"

I showed him the meeting email and the lawyer's reply. He skimmed them, but he still wasn't convinced.

"You had plenty of motive, and you've never cared about consequences."

"So with or without proof, you assume it was me?"

"I just want to know where she is right now."

Before long, the police came to the hospital to question me. Cooperating was the right thing to do, but while they were going over the timeline point by point, Dad was in his room waiting for another round of heart tests. I explained exactly why there'd been a meeting in the parking garage, and Sophia gave them proof that I'd been with Dad the whole time. In the end, the officers said they had found no direct evidence linking me to her disappearance.

Noah was pacing the hallway making calls. He didn't hear any of it.

What left me even more disheartened was hearing him say that the private medical transport he'd arranged for Dad couldn't be scheduled for the time being.

"I have to find Claire first," he explained. "The hospital will take care of your father. One car won't make a difference."

"You're the one who promised to help arrange it."

"I can't be in two places at once right now."

With that, he turned and left. I sat outside Dad's door, asking myself the same question over and over. If Claire never comes back, will he leave me under suspicion indefinitely until he has time to look into it?

Early in the morning, Claire contacted Noah herself. She said she'd been resting at a friend's place and her phone had died. But her public post had a location tag for a casino hotel outside the city. I screenshotted it, but I didn't jump to conclusions. Locations could be faked, and proving where she'd really been would take hard evidence.

Noah texted me, "Found her. She's fine."

I replied, "What about me? What about my father?"

No answer ever came.

Outside the room, my future self slowly lifted her face. One corner of the dark brown scar on her left cheek had faded, as if water were rinsing it away.

"You didn't send anyone after her." She reached up and gently touched her cheek, her voice so faint I could barely hear it. "This time, Dad still has a chance to live."

I looked at her, and my fear gave way to a new thought.

Maybe she really had escaped from a fate that had already happened. If I made different choices, the ending could be rewritten.

I called Emily.

"I'm officially hiring you. The divorce can take its time, but I need to make sure Dad gets out of New York safely."

"Evelyn, are you sure about this?"

My eyes fell on Dad, asleep in his hospital bed.

"I've made up my mind. Don't let Noah find out our full plan."

Three weeks after the fire, the fire report and other investigations began to provide answers. At the greenhouse, the police found the containers of flammable material and fire-starting supplies Claire had brought, and the physical evidence matched her purchase records. Formal investigations were opened into suspected arson and criminal threats. The cases about her past medical aid fraud and her tampering with the oxygen equipment in the hospital room were also being investigated separately. No one tried to talk me into sympathizing with her childhood illness anymore. The hardships she'd gone through when she was young really happened, but they couldn't be an excuse for the harm she chose to do as an adult.Mom's original memory card had been damaged by water in the fire. The technicians managed to save a short clip from the beginning, but most of the footage after that was gone for good.Emily asked if I wanted to hire a second company to try to restore it."We can try," I said. "But

On the day the exhibit opened, Dad insisted on walking into the glass greenhouse on his own.He wore a navy wool cardigan. His right hand was weak, so he gripped his cane in his left. When he reached the entrance, he stopped, carefully straightened his collar, and turned to me. "So, would your mom call me a respectable gentleman?""If she saw you dressed this neatly, she'd probably think you were going to the bank to talk about a loan."Dad laughed, then had to catch his breath a few times before he stepped over the threshold. The greenhouse was full of photos. Mom in a red raincoat standing in the London rain. Mom holding me as a baby, exhausted but smiling. And one of her and Dad fighting over a watering can in their garden.Only a handful of guests came, gathering in front of the photos and talking quietly. Dad pointed at an old photo and slowly told the story of the roses he and Mom had planted together when they got married.I sat to the side with the sheriff's number ready on my

Three days before the exhibit opened, Emily passed along an update from the police. The blackmail email came from an anonymous account that had just been created, and the IP address traced back to the area around a hotel Claire had stayed at before. That alone wasn't enough to convict her, but taken together with the stolen memory card, the blackmail, and every earlier report, it was enough for the police to take the threat more seriously. An officer asked me again, "Who else knows where the event is being held?""I posted the sign-up page on social media briefly, but I took it down right away."He reminded me that once an address had been public, there was no way to completely keep people from finding it. I immediately called every invited guest one by one and told them the event was now invitation-only, with no walk-ins.Sophia was worried I was too tense."Maybe they won't even show up.""I hope so." I kept my phone within reach. "But I can't just count on luck."Martin, the greenho

When Dad suggested putting together a small photo exhibit, I thought he just wanted to sort through the old photos Mom left behind. He brought out a creased notebook from the study, opened it to the first page, and handed it to me. When they were young, he and Mom had promised each other that when they retired, they'd find a sunny glass greenhouse and fill all four walls with a lifetime of photographs."Your mom always said that when the time came, she'd invite all the neighbors over to see how ridiculous I looked when I was young.""She was absolutely right." I was looking at a photo of him in his 20s, complete with a truly questionable mustache."I don't have the energy I used to. I can't put on some big, fancy exhibit.""Then we'll do a small one."The seaside community happened to have a public glass greenhouse you could reserve. It wasn't big, but it had wheelchair ramps that worked for Dad. Sophia offered to bring a few bouquets of roses. I only invited the therapists from the re

The foundation in New York sent an invitation, asking if I'd be willing to record a video for the spring appreciation gala. The director wrote in the email that all the records of my contributions had been fully corrected, and they hoped I'd share my plans for the project's future.I read the email to Dad. He was trying hard to open an old gardening book with his right hand. It took him three tries to turn a page."If you want to record it, record it," Dad said. "But you don't need to stand in front of a camera again just to make Noah sorry.""I know."I agreed to record the video. I spoke only about funding for sick children and their medical teams, and I made it clear that I wouldn't be returning to manage the foundation for now. When I finished, I gave the video to Sophia to look over. She said it sounded too much like a dry progress report."What, am I supposed to tell everyone all the ups and downs of eight years with him?""I just mean, on camera, you're finally speaking for your

After winter set in, Dad and I moved into a house by the sea with a small greenhouse. It had wheelchair ramps and adjustable cabinets. Dad walked up and down the hallway twice a day. His right hand still couldn't lift anything heavy, but he refused to spend his days stuck at the rehab center anymore. On our first day in the new house, he insisted on making the coffee himself."When I was young and starting my business, before I hired a secretary, I made my own coffee every day.""Then I'm in for a treat today."The coffee maker hummed. He reached for a cup, but the handle slipped from his fingers. Most of the coffee spilled across the table and soaked the tablecloth. He stood there, and his face fell."Let me help you." I'd barely stood up when Dad shook his head to stop me."I know you mean well. But I can't let you bring me every cup of coffee for the rest of my life."I sat back down and watched him slowly clear away the soaked tablecloth with his stronger left hand. By the time the
