Chapter 7

Author: Harper
Waiting outside the operating room, I felt for the first time how slowly a hospital clock could move.

Last night, the severe drop in oxygen, combined with Dad's existing heart condition, had triggered a high-risk cardiac emergency. The doctor said he needed surgery as soon as possible. Even if they saved his life, complications from the lack of oxygen and the surgery could leave him with permanent problems moving and speaking.

When I signed the consent form, the tip of my pen dug into the paper, leaving a small black dot.

My whole life, Dad had signed countless forms for me. Kindergarten field trips, driver's ed, my applications to study abroad. Now it was my turn to sign one consent form after another, and only then did I truly understand how heavy a signature could be.

Sophia brought me some hot soup, but I couldn't swallow a single mouthful.

Noah stood outside the surgical area. After paging through the thick stack of test results I was holding, he finally asked, "What's going on with Richard?"

I handed him the hospital's time-stamped records.

"The nurse found that someone had turned down the oxygen flow. His oxygen levels crashed. Your men held me in the hallway until the doctors started working on him. So let me ask you. Why wouldn't you tell your bodyguards to let me go?"

He read each page very slowly.

"I gave the order to get you out of the room. I admit that. But Claire may have just been trying to help and made a mistake. She's scared of hospitals as it is. She has no idea how medical equipment works."

I looked at him quietly. For a moment, I didn't know whether to be angry with him or pity him.

In the first few years of his business, Noah hit wall after wall in countless conference rooms. Dad always said it wasn't a bad thing for a young man to have pride, and he warned me never to let our help make Noah feel small. Together, we went everywhere looking for investors for him. When we stayed up late, he'd bring over three cups of instant coffee and solemnly promise that one day he'd pay us back.

Back then, he'd understood that trust was the most precious thing two people could share.

Now Dad was lying in the operating room, his life hanging in the balance, and Noah wouldn't even ask what Claire had actually done.

"Did you actually read the nurse's written notes?" I asked.

"Evelyn, I'm not saying you're lying."

"Then when are you going to start believing the evidence right in front of you?"

He didn't answer.

Sophia quietly suggested we release all the security footage to the public and let everyone see what Noah had done.

I shook my head.

"Giving the evidence to the police is enough. Right now, I don't want a crowd of reporters outside Dad's door."

Emily got there quickly and went with me to give the police more evidence. The nurse submitted records of the abnormal monitor readings, the hospital preserved the door access footage, and the bodyguards involved were called in to explain who gave the order to hold me back.

When the hospital confirmed the list of contacts authorized to receive information about Dad's condition, I removed both Noah and Claire from it.

Noah's expression changed when he saw his name wasn't on the list.

"Evelyn, I'm his son-in-law."

"On paper, yes. But what he needs right now isn't a title. It's someone who makes saving his life the priority."

He pressed his lips together, like he couldn't accept that I wasn't following his lead anymore.

I didn't explain any further. We hadn't set a date to leave. Everything depended on when the doctors decided Dad could be moved safely. That was exactly why I couldn't let Noah know any of our plans.

I texted Emily, "Keep the legal paperwork moving, but don't serve anything yet. Once Dad's condition is stable, we'll arrange the transfer out of state."

After I sent it, I closed my eyes.

There was still a hard road ahead, but at least this time, Dad was alive.

Three weeks after the fire, the fire report and other investigations began to provide answers. At the greenhouse, the police found the containers of flammable material and fire-starting supplies Claire had brought, and the physical evidence matched her purchase records. Formal investigations were opened into suspected arson and criminal threats. The cases about her past medical aid fraud and her tampering with the oxygen equipment in the hospital room were also being investigated separately. No one tried to talk me into sympathizing with her childhood illness anymore. The hardships she'd gone through when she was young really happened, but they couldn't be an excuse for the harm she chose to do as an adult.Mom's original memory card had been damaged by water in the fire. The technicians managed to save a short clip from the beginning, but most of the footage after that was gone for good.Emily asked if I wanted to hire a second company to try to restore it."We can try," I said. "But

On the day the exhibit opened, Dad insisted on walking into the glass greenhouse on his own.He wore a navy wool cardigan. His right hand was weak, so he gripped his cane in his left. When he reached the entrance, he stopped, carefully straightened his collar, and turned to me. "So, would your mom call me a respectable gentleman?""If she saw you dressed this neatly, she'd probably think you were going to the bank to talk about a loan."Dad laughed, then had to catch his breath a few times before he stepped over the threshold. The greenhouse was full of photos. Mom in a red raincoat standing in the London rain. Mom holding me as a baby, exhausted but smiling. And one of her and Dad fighting over a watering can in their garden.Only a handful of guests came, gathering in front of the photos and talking quietly. Dad pointed at an old photo and slowly told the story of the roses he and Mom had planted together when they got married.I sat to the side with the sheriff's number ready on my

Three days before the exhibit opened, Emily passed along an update from the police. The blackmail email came from an anonymous account that had just been created, and the IP address traced back to the area around a hotel Claire had stayed at before. That alone wasn't enough to convict her, but taken together with the stolen memory card, the blackmail, and every earlier report, it was enough for the police to take the threat more seriously. An officer asked me again, "Who else knows where the event is being held?""I posted the sign-up page on social media briefly, but I took it down right away."He reminded me that once an address had been public, there was no way to completely keep people from finding it. I immediately called every invited guest one by one and told them the event was now invitation-only, with no walk-ins.Sophia was worried I was too tense."Maybe they won't even show up.""I hope so." I kept my phone within reach. "But I can't just count on luck."Martin, the greenho

When Dad suggested putting together a small photo exhibit, I thought he just wanted to sort through the old photos Mom left behind. He brought out a creased notebook from the study, opened it to the first page, and handed it to me. When they were young, he and Mom had promised each other that when they retired, they'd find a sunny glass greenhouse and fill all four walls with a lifetime of photographs."Your mom always said that when the time came, she'd invite all the neighbors over to see how ridiculous I looked when I was young.""She was absolutely right." I was looking at a photo of him in his 20s, complete with a truly questionable mustache."I don't have the energy I used to. I can't put on some big, fancy exhibit.""Then we'll do a small one."The seaside community happened to have a public glass greenhouse you could reserve. It wasn't big, but it had wheelchair ramps that worked for Dad. Sophia offered to bring a few bouquets of roses. I only invited the therapists from the re

The foundation in New York sent an invitation, asking if I'd be willing to record a video for the spring appreciation gala. The director wrote in the email that all the records of my contributions had been fully corrected, and they hoped I'd share my plans for the project's future.I read the email to Dad. He was trying hard to open an old gardening book with his right hand. It took him three tries to turn a page."If you want to record it, record it," Dad said. "But you don't need to stand in front of a camera again just to make Noah sorry.""I know."I agreed to record the video. I spoke only about funding for sick children and their medical teams, and I made it clear that I wouldn't be returning to manage the foundation for now. When I finished, I gave the video to Sophia to look over. She said it sounded too much like a dry progress report."What, am I supposed to tell everyone all the ups and downs of eight years with him?""I just mean, on camera, you're finally speaking for your

After winter set in, Dad and I moved into a house by the sea with a small greenhouse. It had wheelchair ramps and adjustable cabinets. Dad walked up and down the hallway twice a day. His right hand still couldn't lift anything heavy, but he refused to spend his days stuck at the rehab center anymore. On our first day in the new house, he insisted on making the coffee himself."When I was young and starting my business, before I hired a secretary, I made my own coffee every day.""Then I'm in for a treat today."The coffee maker hummed. He reached for a cup, but the handle slipped from his fingers. Most of the coffee spilled across the table and soaked the tablecloth. He stood there, and his face fell."Let me help you." I'd barely stood up when Dad shook his head to stop me."I know you mean well. But I can't let you bring me every cup of coffee for the rest of my life."I sat back down and watched him slowly clear away the soaked tablecloth with his stronger left hand. By the time the
