Chapter 6

Author: Harper
By the fourth day after the charity gala, I was practically living at the hospital.

Dad's surgical evaluation moved forward step by step, and the rehab hospital in Maine tentatively agreed to take him. All that was left was for the doctors to confirm whether his heart could handle the long transfer.

"You can't drop your work and your family just to take care of me." Dad sat on the edge of the bed, trying to button his coat himself. It took him two tries to get one button done. "When couples fight, hurtful things are bound to get said."

I hung his coat back over the chair.

"Dad, this isn't just an ordinary fight anymore."

He stared at my splint and didn't try to talk me out of it. I finally told him about the guards injuring me, having my name removed from the foundation's project, and Noah accusing me of kidnapping Claire without cause.

After he heard it all, Dad was quiet for a long time. Then he asked softly, "Does he think that when I helped him start his business, I was looking down on where he came from?"

I didn't know how to answer.

"I just couldn't bear to watch you struggle for his sake back then." Dad sighed. "But that kindness shouldn't have become his excuse to hurt you later. As soon as the doctors say it's okay, we're leaving."

I told Emily about Dad's decision and reminded her to schedule the medical team.

That afternoon, I went to another building to sign some papers. A nurse called and said a woman claiming to be Noah's sister had come to visit Dad.

"She has a visitor sticker from the foundation and says she's here to apologize on behalf of Mr. Reed. I told her to wait in the visitor lounge, and she was there just a minute ago."

My heart dropped.

"Don't let her into his room, no matter what. I'm coming right back."

I knew it had to be Claire. The scars on my future self's face seemed to tighten.

"Evelyn, hurry."

I ran all the way up to the ward and pushed the door open. Dad was lying on his back, gasping for air. The call button that should have been by his hand was tucked behind his pillow. The nasal oxygen tube was still on his face, but the oxygen flow had been turned far below the prescribed level.

Claire was standing at the foot of the bed.

"He kept complaining that the tube was uncomfortable, so I adjusted it for him."

I immediately turned the oxygen back to the prescribed setting on his care chart, hit the emergency call button by the bed, and called for the nurses to come right away.

"Who said you could touch the medical equipment?" I stepped forward and stood in front of the bed.

Claire glanced at the door, and the fake smile vanished from her face.

"You really do care a lot about your father." She leaned in close to my ear, her voice cold. "No wonder. As long as I use him as leverage, you'll put up with anything."

I shoved her away.

"Get out. Get out now."

She dropped onto the edge of a chair, and in an instant, tears came pouring out. "I was only trying to help. Why did you push me?"

A nurse rushed in and checked Dad's oxygen saturation right away. His lips were slowly turning gray, and the nurse shouted for a doctor. I gripped the bed rail and begged her to help him.

Just then, Noah showed up.

Claire threw herself into his arms. "I came to apologize for you, and Evelyn decided I was trying to hurt her father."

Noah saw me gripping Claire's sleeve. He saw the fury on my face.

"Stop this nonsense." He turned to the bodyguards behind him. "Take her out first. Don't let her keep threatening Claire."

Two bodyguards stepped up and grabbed me by the arms.

"Noah, she changed the oxygen settings! The doctor isn't here yet. Don't stop me!"

"Can you stop blaming Claire for everything?" he said, raising his voice.

The monitor in the room suddenly let out a shrill alarm.

A nurse shoved the door open and rushed out. "His oxygen level is dropping fast! Everyone who doesn't need to be here, out! We need room!"

She pushed right between us, and several doctors poured into the room with emergency equipment. Only then did Noah see that the oxygen setup by the bed had been tampered with and notice the nurse's notes. He quickly ordered the bodyguards to let me go.

I stumbled toward the door, but a doctor kept me from going in.

"We need room to work. Are you the healthcare proxy?"

"Yes."

"Please wait outside. We'll update you soon."

The door slammed shut. I could see Dad's left hand hanging over the edge of the bed. That hand used to hold my bike steady when I wobbled. Now it didn't move at all.

I slid slowly down the wall to the floor. The pain in my wrist was so intense I nearly passed out.

Noah stood a short distance away. For the first time, there was a trace of panic on his face.

"I didn't think it would get this serious."

"You didn't think? Then you should have listened to the doctors and to his family." I looked up at him. "But you chose to have your bodyguards silence me."

Claire was still sobbing quietly nearby. I found the ward supervisor right away, showed my healthcare proxy papers, and asked them to revoke Claire's and Noah's visiting privileges. I had them preserve the door access footage, the equipment logs, and the nursing shift records. Then I called the police and reported that someone had barged into the room and tampered with the oxygen equipment.

When the police arrived, Noah didn't try to stop them again.

Dad was moved to the ICU. The doctor said he couldn't be transferred as planned for now. Whether he'd need emergency surgery would depend on how his vital signs changed over the next few hours.

My future self was huddled beside Dad's empty wheelchair, shaking all over.

"Last time, I just kept begging him to hear me out," she murmured. "By the time I came to my senses, it was too late to call the police."

"But not this time." My voice was shaking too. "I saw it, and I called the doctor right away."

She slowly lifted her face. The dark scars that had covered her knees faded away completely in that moment.

But she didn't look relieved at all.

"Evelyn, Dad's still in there fighting for his life."

Three weeks after the fire, the fire report and other investigations began to provide answers. At the greenhouse, the police found the containers of flammable material and fire-starting supplies Claire had brought, and the physical evidence matched her purchase records. Formal investigations were opened into suspected arson and criminal threats. The cases about her past medical aid fraud and her tampering with the oxygen equipment in the hospital room were also being investigated separately. No one tried to talk me into sympathizing with her childhood illness anymore. The hardships she'd gone through when she was young really happened, but they couldn't be an excuse for the harm she chose to do as an adult.Mom's original memory card had been damaged by water in the fire. The technicians managed to save a short clip from the beginning, but most of the footage after that was gone for good.Emily asked if I wanted to hire a second company to try to restore it."We can try," I said. "But

On the day the exhibit opened, Dad insisted on walking into the glass greenhouse on his own.He wore a navy wool cardigan. His right hand was weak, so he gripped his cane in his left. When he reached the entrance, he stopped, carefully straightened his collar, and turned to me. "So, would your mom call me a respectable gentleman?""If she saw you dressed this neatly, she'd probably think you were going to the bank to talk about a loan."Dad laughed, then had to catch his breath a few times before he stepped over the threshold. The greenhouse was full of photos. Mom in a red raincoat standing in the London rain. Mom holding me as a baby, exhausted but smiling. And one of her and Dad fighting over a watering can in their garden.Only a handful of guests came, gathering in front of the photos and talking quietly. Dad pointed at an old photo and slowly told the story of the roses he and Mom had planted together when they got married.I sat to the side with the sheriff's number ready on my

Three days before the exhibit opened, Emily passed along an update from the police. The blackmail email came from an anonymous account that had just been created, and the IP address traced back to the area around a hotel Claire had stayed at before. That alone wasn't enough to convict her, but taken together with the stolen memory card, the blackmail, and every earlier report, it was enough for the police to take the threat more seriously. An officer asked me again, "Who else knows where the event is being held?""I posted the sign-up page on social media briefly, but I took it down right away."He reminded me that once an address had been public, there was no way to completely keep people from finding it. I immediately called every invited guest one by one and told them the event was now invitation-only, with no walk-ins.Sophia was worried I was too tense."Maybe they won't even show up.""I hope so." I kept my phone within reach. "But I can't just count on luck."Martin, the greenho

When Dad suggested putting together a small photo exhibit, I thought he just wanted to sort through the old photos Mom left behind. He brought out a creased notebook from the study, opened it to the first page, and handed it to me. When they were young, he and Mom had promised each other that when they retired, they'd find a sunny glass greenhouse and fill all four walls with a lifetime of photographs."Your mom always said that when the time came, she'd invite all the neighbors over to see how ridiculous I looked when I was young.""She was absolutely right." I was looking at a photo of him in his 20s, complete with a truly questionable mustache."I don't have the energy I used to. I can't put on some big, fancy exhibit.""Then we'll do a small one."The seaside community happened to have a public glass greenhouse you could reserve. It wasn't big, but it had wheelchair ramps that worked for Dad. Sophia offered to bring a few bouquets of roses. I only invited the therapists from the re

The foundation in New York sent an invitation, asking if I'd be willing to record a video for the spring appreciation gala. The director wrote in the email that all the records of my contributions had been fully corrected, and they hoped I'd share my plans for the project's future.I read the email to Dad. He was trying hard to open an old gardening book with his right hand. It took him three tries to turn a page."If you want to record it, record it," Dad said. "But you don't need to stand in front of a camera again just to make Noah sorry.""I know."I agreed to record the video. I spoke only about funding for sick children and their medical teams, and I made it clear that I wouldn't be returning to manage the foundation for now. When I finished, I gave the video to Sophia to look over. She said it sounded too much like a dry progress report."What, am I supposed to tell everyone all the ups and downs of eight years with him?""I just mean, on camera, you're finally speaking for your

After winter set in, Dad and I moved into a house by the sea with a small greenhouse. It had wheelchair ramps and adjustable cabinets. Dad walked up and down the hallway twice a day. His right hand still couldn't lift anything heavy, but he refused to spend his days stuck at the rehab center anymore. On our first day in the new house, he insisted on making the coffee himself."When I was young and starting my business, before I hired a secretary, I made my own coffee every day.""Then I'm in for a treat today."The coffee maker hummed. He reached for a cup, but the handle slipped from his fingers. Most of the coffee spilled across the table and soaked the tablecloth. He stood there, and his face fell."Let me help you." I'd barely stood up when Dad shook his head to stop me."I know you mean well. But I can't let you bring me every cup of coffee for the rest of my life."I sat back down and watched him slowly clear away the soaked tablecloth with his stronger left hand. By the time the
