Chapter 8

Author: Anonymous
After stumbling away from my parents’ house, Dan did something I never expected. He went back to the house we once shared.

Ever since his plans for revenge had come to light, he had bought another place and rarely returned here.

I watched as he stood at the door. His fingers were trembling as he keyed in the password. It was still the date of our wedding.

The door opened. Dust motes swirled in the still air as he stepped inside. Everything was covered in a thin, gray film of neglect.

He walked inside. His steps were unsteady, as if he were walking on clouds that could dissolve at any moment.

My memory went back to that day.

It was our seventh wedding anniversary.

That evening, I had cooked a full meal myself and opened a bottle of his favorite red wine. I was getting ready to celebrate another major deal he had secured for the company.

Beaming with happiness, I raised my glass to clink it with him.

However, with a sharp flick of his wrist, he poured the wine onto the floor.

Dan remained curled on our bed for three days. After that, he drifted through the house like a ghost. He searched every corner, as if gathering fragments of me might somehow piece together more memories. My clothes were still neatly hung in the closet. My lipstick lay untouched on the bathroom counter.Even my favorite perfume was still half-full.He held one of my shirts against himself and murmured to the fabric as if whispering to a lover. “You always used too much perfume. I told you so many times.”His phone buzzed incessantly. Unanswered calls from the company were piling up. His notifications claimed there were over ninety-nine missed calls. In the end, his assistant had no choice but to come to the house. He knocked anxiously at the door.“Mr. Fanning! You haven’t shown up in a week. The board is—” “Go away.”The word was forced from his throat, hoarse and unrecognizable. On the morning of the fourth day, he finally staggered to his feet and took his first hot show

It was the very home he had meticulously poisoned against me, driving a wedge so deep it severed my ties with my parents. The place he had never set foot in again after taking everything I owned. With his phone in hand, hesitation filled Dan’s eyes.In the end, he hardened his resolve and drove over anyway. However, when he reached the gates of the Dancy family mansion, his finger hovered above the doorbell. He could not bring himself to press it.Finally, he drew a sharp breath and pressed it.My mother opened the door. Her eyes were swollen and red. Her face was drawn with grief. The moment she saw Dan, fresh tears spilled over.“You! How dare you show your face here?”The commotion drew the others from inside, where the funeral service was being held. Sarah was the first to rush forward. Her face was dark with anger.“Dan, what the hell are you doing here?”As he stood in the doorway, Dan no longer carried even a trace of his former arrogance. He lowered his head. His

Dan tried to calm himself, but the tears came in a torrent he could not stem.I drifted beside him. As I watched his shoulders shake, a confusion settled in my chest. He was crying so hard. Could it mean he had liked me a little? How could that be?He had been so cruel to me. He gave me years of cold indifference. He would not speak to me. He would not come home. He even knocked my ashes to the floor deliberately. How could someone like that have ever felt anything for me?Yet the way he looked seemed to say otherwise. While clutching the letter, Dan staggered out of the university. Back in the car, he gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. Suddenly, he slammed his fist against it a few times. A choked, agonized sound escaped his throat.“Emma…”I did not understand why he was behaving like that. All I could do was stay by his side and cry with him. Then his head snapped up, as if something had just occurred to him. He stepped hard on the accelerator,

I stayed by Dan’s bedside all night.I watched the way his brow stayed furrowed in his sleep. I saw the way alcohol had left his cheeks faintly flushed.Moment after moment passed before my eyes, yet I could not look away.Dan slept through the entire day, lost in a heavy hangover. When he finally woke, he had a splitting headache. He stumbled out of bed and kicked over the cardboard box he had brought back from the university. My things scattered across the floor with a clatter.Scowling, he reluctantly knelt and began to gather them up.When he picked up a notebook, he found a letter tucked beneath it.The envelope was yellowed with age, and its edges were worn. The recipient’s name was written on it. [Emma]I froze.I had never seen this letter before.Dan stared at the envelope with a deep frown. His fingers brushed over the handwriting absentmindedly. After a moment of hesitation, he finally opened it.The moment the letter unfolded, his eyes widened. He knew that

Ever since the day he returned from the university, I had noticed that something was off about Dan.I was dead. He should have felt triumphant. After all, he had hated me for years. He had finally exacted his revenge with his own hands, even going so far as to pour my ashes down the drain.Logically, he should have felt liberated. However, over the past few days, he had remained silent. His eyes were hollow. He was distracted even during high-level meetings at the company. His assistant noticed as well. He cautiously said, “Mr. Fanning, you haven’t seemed yourself lately. Would you like to postpone some of the events in your schedule and take a break? I can arrange flights and a hotel.”Dan stared at his computer screen. He was tapping his fingers on the desk absentmindedly. He was silent for a long moment before finally saying, “Cancel my meetings for this afternoon and tomorrow.”His assistant nodded. “Okay. Where would you like to go? I’ll make the arrangements right away.”
