Chapter 2

Melinda looked absolutely mortified and furious as she said, “Selena, you’re a woman too. How could you spread rumors like that about me in front of everyone—?”

Selena cut her off ruthlessly, “Wasn’t that lipstick stain on Geoffrey’s collar from you?

“Weren’t you the one who swapped out his car freshener?

“Isn’t that couple’s Instagram account, Sweet Secrets, yours?

“If you’re going to act like a loose woman, don’t turn around and play the saint.”

Her continuous questions made Melinda’s face turn deathly pale.

Melinda assumed her secret actions were hidden, but to her surprise, Selena had actually caught on.

As a matter of fact, she had noticed something off about Geoffrey a month ago.

He was no longer attentive to her every need.

When he held her, he unconsciously remarked that she was a bit too tall, and that it would be better if she were a little shorter so as to look more delicate.

At that moment, she knew he had an affair with someone shorter than her.

But before she could even confront him, he had taken a phone call and rushed out the door.

That night, she sat alone in the living room and waited for him until dawn.

When he returned, he told her that something came up at work and he had to fly overseas on a last-minute business trip.

Once she calmed down, she hired a private investigator to quietly gather evidence of his affair.

She needed to confirm whether he was just temporarily infatuated or truly having an affair.

How ridiculous it was that she had even considered giving him a second chance because of the three years they had spent together.

Thinking about it, once a cheater, always a cheater.

The Brodie family’s lawyer, Herbert Sterling, worked fast. In just half an hour, he had drafted the divorce papers, printed them out, and had them delivered to the booked room where the party was held.

Selena picked up a pen and swiftly signed her name on the wife’s signature line.

Then, she handed it to Geoffrey and said, “Sign it.”

“That’s enough.” He swatted the document out of her hand. “It’s just a game. You don’t need to blow it out of proportion.”

“Life is just a game too, Geoffrey. What’s the matter? Can’t take a taste of your own medicine?” she retorted calmly.

He frowned.

They had been in an arranged marriage for three years, and he had never once seriously considered divorce.

Those divorce papers on the table were actually a test Melinda had come up with. She and his other friends wanted to see what mattered more to Selena. Her life, or their marriage.

In truth, the second Melinda pointed at that glass of liquor, he had already tensed up. He was ready to snatch the bottle away before Selena could even take a sip.

However, no one had expected that she would choose neither of the options they offered. Instead, she grabbed the bottle and hurled it toward Melinda.

To top it all off, she had even gotten Herbert to draft real divorce papers.

His group of friends sensed that things had gone too far. They immediately grabbed their glasses and tried to laugh it off. “Selly, sorry we took the joke too far. Don’t be mad.”

“Yeah, we’ll each do three shots as an apology. Come on, cut us some slack.”

One of the guys moved fast. Not only did he finish his own drink, but he also poured another glass and shoved it into Melinda’s hand.

Melinda rolled her eyes at them and said harshly, “Please. Sure, she’s part of the Brodie family, but she’s just an orphan at the end of the day.

“She only became the chairman because she married Geoff. Do you really think she’d have the guts to divorce him?

“It’s just her scare tactic to keep you guys in line. I’m not falling for it.”

Geoffrey’s fear subsided, and he relaxed when he heard this. Melinda was right.

Earlier this year, when they went to visit her parents’ graves, she had cried and said he was all she had left.

Selena could not afford to lose him.

He believed he had seen through her tough front. When she insisted on waiting for him to sign, he simply lowered his head and kissed her on the lips.

Every time they argued, or she got angry, he would use this method to coax her.

He just had to hold her tight, kiss her, and tell her he would always be there. That always did the trick.

“Easy now, there’s no need to make a scene—”

Before he could finish his words, Selena slapped him across his face with all her strength.

“Get off me, Geoffrey. Don’t you dare kiss me with that filthy mouth,” she said, looking beyond disgusted.

His cheek immediately swelled up.

His friends were all so stunned that they held their breath.

Geoffrey sneered and reminded her, “Selena, have you forgotten that you can only stay on as the chairman and keep your parents’ inheritance as long as you’re with me?

“Without me, you’re nothing.”
