Chapter 1 Nearing Death

작가: Give Me 50
Three years ago, Joseph had a heart attack during an extreme sports session, and he was knocked out right away.

The doctor said he needed a new and healthy heart, or he would never wake again. When they told me my heart was a match for Joseph, I signed the form of consent without batting an eye.

When I woke up, I realized I could never get used to Joseph's weak heart, and my condition was getting worse with every passing day.

And so I chose to leave him. I refused to weigh him down. He thought I left him because of his disease.

Our reunion happened when he barged into my ward, bringing my childhood friend with him. He stood before me and made me sign the asset transfer.

I met his sardonic gaze and hid my arm that was covered in track marks. The guy was adapting well. I had mixed feelings about that.

There was no regret from me. That was not what he was hoping for. I said calmly, "Well, you're rich now. You should be giving me money, not taking what little I have left."

Joseph snickered. He yanked off the couple's necklace we bought and stomped it underneath his foot. "I knew it. You're leaving me just for money. You ran off the moment I got hit with the heart attack. If Teresa hadn't donated her heart to me, I'd never have gotten this far!"

He kicked the necklace away. "I want you to lose everything you have."

The people around us gasped. The patients and nurses were giving me looks of mockery and disdain. I picked up the necklace and dusted it off.

The once-shining obsidian was now covered in grime. 'But I was the one who donated my heart to you,' I thought.

I said nothing about it. I was a dying woman, anyway. The hospital gave me a notice of critical condition earlier. Two weeks left.

I would not survive unless I had a new heart, but the surgery was far pricier than what I could afford.

I wanted to live for myself, for what remained of my life. So I put on the necklace, to everyone's disdain. I linked it to mine.

Teresa watched me make a fool out of myself, then she hugged Joseph tightly. She said, “Thanks for taking care of Joseph all these years. Now it’s my turn. How about you sign the divorce papers too?”

I snatched the papers from her hand and signed them all. My lack of hesitation only fueled Joseph’s scorn for me.

Teresa, however, smiled happily. “Oh, it reeks here, Joseph. I’d rather not stay.”

Joseph gave her a loving smile. “You and your fussiness. Let’s go shopping.” He put his arm around her and left the ward without sparing me a glance.

Not long after that, I got a call. It was Teresa. The woman Joseph held. The best friend I thought I had for more than twenty years.

"You should've stayed away, Selina. Shouldn't have come back. You can't take Joseph away from me. We're too in love."

I said nothing.

She continued, "Wake up. You lost your chance. You have nothing now! He hates gold diggers. You thought he was done for, didn't you? I bet you regret it now."

"Done?" I asked quietly.

Smugly, she said, "What? You think you—"

I hung up on her.

Time was not on my side anymore. I did not want to waste any more of that precious coin on people I did not care about.

I picked up a handful of colorful pills and gulped them all down, washing them down with nothing but water. The pills got stuck in my throat, and the pain made me frown.

It took me a while, but I swallowed them all. Then, my phone rang again. Joseph. I picked it up, and he went into a tirade. "What did you say to Teresa? She's crying her eyes out!"

He stopped talking, and his eyes were red. "You're mad at me, aren't you?"I said nothing. He begged me to see a doctor. He said that medicine was more advanced here, and that I would get better.I laughed at myself and said no. Even if I could get a surgery, finding a match would take forever. The man would not take no for an answer. "Please, please forgive me. Don't kill yourself over this."I sneered and slammed my foot into his belly. He groaned in agony, and his face went white."Does that hurt? My pain is at least a thousand times worse! How dare you ask for my forgiveness!'Joseph grabbed my ankle and shoved my foot into his body himself. "Kick me if you must. Do anything to vent. Just get that surgery!"I kicked my foot free of his hand. "I'd want to, but my body's at its limits."Frozen, he put his hands down, and I went into my house. The moment I went inside, I saw him punish himself until his cheeks were swollen. And I slammed my door shut.Final day. Joseph staye

That was what I told myself, softly, as I slid the last painkiller into the final slot. Before I boarded the plane, I looked at the city I'd lived in for twenty-five years. One last time. The sun was setting, and the window panes in the airport reflected my haggard look. An oversized jacket covered my skeletal body. My once-glossy hair was nothing but dried hay now. And my eyes were sunken.I couldn't believe Joseph did not notice anything wrong with me, even when I was practically cadaverous.I laughed at myself. The man who only had eyes for me eventually looked at someone else. Then, a commotion happened in the distance. I narrowed my eyes. A familiar figure was tussling with the airport staff at the terminal. He was trying to barge in."Selina? Selina!" His heart-wrenching shouts pierced the hall.I took a step forward and stopped. The crystal bracelets on my wrists clashed into each other, and they let out a crisp sound. One was the couple's bracelet. The other was the one

Joseph sneered. "Hatred blinded me. It took me too long to find out. Your proof, including the surgeon's signature, was fake! Doctored!"Teresa paled. "Yes, I made it all up, but so what? She left you anyway!" Tears streamed down her cheeks. Carefully, she crawled over and held the leg of Joseph's pants. "She's dying anyway. The living are more important than the dead. I'll always stay with you. I'm the one who's stayed with you all this time."The world around him was spinning. He remembered how he mocked me on the award stage. He remembered how he held Teresa and humiliated me in front of everyone else. And he remembered how he hit me just for Teresa.'What the hell have I been doing?' he thought and cursed himself in his mind. 'Damn me.'Then, he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were red. He shook Teresa as hard as he could and tried to drag her to the hospital to see whether her heart was a match for me."You love me, eh? Then, get Selina back! Give her your

That sounded like a joke to Joseph. His face fell. "Losing her? As if." He then picked Teresa up and went to the hospital without even looking back. The guests heard him, and they hurled insults at me. Then, someone tossed a piece of garbage. Then another. And another. Soon, the guests all threw garbage at me.I clutched my chest, my body covered in trash. My vision was turning blurry, and I fell into a heap of garbage. When I came to, I was facing a white ceiling. The doctor was giving me a reproachful look. "I've told you, time and again, no emotional rollercoasters. The heart surgery has weakened you too much, and it's only going to be…" He sounded piteous. "You have one week left. Spend it wisely."I nodded quietly, but when I turned around, tears fell down my cheeks. Joseph held Teresa, who sprained her feet, and they went by my ward. The man did not even spare me a look. Then, I remembered my flight. It was scheduled for the night. It was time. I got myself discharged an

Teresa pretended to pick the pieces up, but she was looking at Joseph through the corner of her eye.He frowned and held her before she could bend any lower. "No, Teresa. Don't dirty your hands. That necklace is nothing. Just some cheap accessory. If she wants it so much, she can pick up the pieces herself.Teresa put on a fake apology for me. "Sorry, Selina. You'll have to pick up the pieces yourself. I can't do it since I'm really weak."Then, she sat on the couch and looked at me, trying to watch me humiliate myself. He went over and put his arms around her. He too wanted to watch me make a show. I told them I could live without the necklace, so I tried to leave. She said, "No can do, Selina. You can't leave our house in a mess. Besides, you cleaned the place. It’s only right to see it through."I clenched my fists and held back my fury. Then, I looked at Joseph. He didn't seem to care. The man was caressing Teresa's head. They exchanged a smile. To me, it was an eyesore. "Fi

I was still stuck in my thoughts, but then Joseph came closer and broke my reverie. He jeered, "What are you doing here?"Teresa was holding his arm. With pity, she commented, "You're strong, Selina. Got back to work straight out of the hospital. Me? I can't even do a thing. Joseph wouldn't let me tire myself out."He kissed her forehead. "She's not you. If not for her heartless behavior, I'd never have run into you. You're perfect."The sight of them being so in love was making the track marks on my arm prick. I refused to watch this any further, so I went around, but Teresa stretched her leg, and I tripped."Oh, be careful, Selina."I fell to the ground, my files sprawling everywhere.Gasping, Teresa picked up the files. "What is this? Are you going overseas, Selina?"It was a cheap house I got for myself. A cemetery sat right beside that place. I had enough savings to afford the down payment.Joseph took the flyer. "No wonder you wanted money." His face fell, and he hurled t
