Chapter 2

Author: Adorable Fish
While the officers were distracted, I scooped up a handful of dust from the road and smeared it across my face.

Seeing me thus begrimed and plainly with child, the superior officer gave me only a glance before roundly cursing the other for his poor eyesight.

“The woman His Majesty seeks could hardly be pregnant! Have you taken leave of your senses?”

Thoroughly rebuked, the younger officer released me at once and waved me away.

“Go on, then. Move along!”

Yet somehow, as I walked away, the portrait lingered in my mind and stirred an uneasy feeling.

I quickly dismissed the absurd notion.

Edmund could not possibly be the king!

What king would consent to marry into an ordinary merchant’s family? The very notion was ridiculous.

That thought restored my composure. Even so, I instructed my steward to handle my business dealings for the time being.

I had thought the matter concluded.

That night, however, I dreamed of Edmund.

He stood before me in royal robes. His hand clamped firmly beneath my chin. There was a sinister smile on his face.

“Did you truly believe you could disappear from me, Matilda? Now, why have you stopped? Go on, run again. The nerve of you to run with my child! You clearly have a death wish. Guards, take her to the block!”

Terrified, I tried to flee, but Edmund’s men seized me in an instant.

The next moment, I found myself being dragged to the executioner’s block.

The very moment the blade descended, I startled awake.

As I wiped the sweat from my brow, I became aware of a dull ache low in my belly.

I looked down and saw fluid trickling between my thighs.

I cried out. The maids and matrons waiting outside rushed into the room.

One of the older women, who had attended many births, drew back the covers and exclaimed in alarm, “Good heavens! The lady is about to deliver early! Send for the midwife at once!”

As it was my first child, I labored a full day and night before the child was finally born.

She was a beautiful little girl, as delicate as a porcelain doll.

I had longed to see her. Yet the moment I looked upon her face, my spirits fell.

This child, whom I had brought forth with such suffering, bore not a single feature resembling my own.

She was the very image of Edmund, that wretched man!

Three years passed in the blink of an eye.

My daughter, Lily Dauchy, had grown into an exceptionally bright little girl. At only three years old, she could recite verses by heart.

My father doted on his granddaughter beyond measure. More often than not, he carried her upon his shoulders as he wandered through the house with her.

I had no idea what charming little remark Lily had made that day, but it left her grandfather grinning from ear to ear as he handed her a sugar plum.

“My precious girl, you are as clever as can be! Nothing like your mother. She was such a muddle-headed child. Heaven only knows whose wits she inherited.”

The moment my father’s words brought Edmund to mind, I shot him a sharp look.

He cleared his throat and wisely let the matter drop before trying another approach.

“Still, Matilda, are you truly determined never to give me another son-in-law?”

Another husband? I could not bring myself to trust one.

I had lost all faith in men.

The truth was, when the king’s search had first begun three years earlier, I had made inquiries about Edmund.

After Lily was born, I discreetly returned to our former home to learn whether anyone had come looking for me. According to the neighbors, not so much as a stray cat had crossed the threshold.

I felt like a fool. I had actually thought that Edmund might be searching the whole kingdom for me.

Later, I made further inquiries and discovered the name of the reigning king.

His name was Henry Neville.

After that, I abandoned the notion entirely. All I wanted was to raise Lily well and care for my parents.

Seeing that I had fallen silent, my father changed the subject and turned his attention back to entertaining Lily.

The following day, I returned home from the shop as usual.

No sooner had I stepped through the door than I found Ethel Talbot, Lily’s nursemaid, hurrying toward me as pale and distracted as though she had seen a ghost.

“My Lady, something dreadful has happened! Miss Lily is gone! We’ve searched everywhere, but there’s no sign of her. It’s all my fault! I stopped to buy her a sugared apple, and when I turned around, she had vanished!”

My knees were scarcely steady as I left the room. Once I was certain I was alone, I drew a small silver whistle from inside my gown.Henry had given it to me before his departure. He had told me to use it if I ever found myself in danger. With no better hope, I raised it to my lips and blew.Almost at once, a dark figure stepped from the shadows.“Ms. Dauchy.”Startled, I pressed a hand to my chest to calm myself down.“So he left one of his guards behind. Anyway, can you get word to him in three days? I have something urgent to tell him.”The man bowed his head.“What message would you have me carry to His Majesty, Ms. Dauchy?”I told him everything that had happened that day and urged him to deliver the news without delay. When I returned home, my parents and I agreed that we should divide our chances. They would flee north, while I took Lily south. For the next two days, we behaved as though nothing had happened. I spent each day in tears.By the final day, our lack of

Henry left.He was not, of course, driven away by me. He had left because the ministers at court had finally discovered that their king was missing. Before his departure, Henry came to my door once more.“Matilda, I hope you’ll give the matter some thought. I’ll return before long to take you and Lily with me.”By then, he had tried my patience thoroughly. Lily had been sleeping poorly ever since her fright, which had left me in a most ill humor.“I told you, Lily isn’t your daughter. Must you be so tiresome?”As soon as I said that, I regretted it at once.He was the king.Yet instead of taking offence, he looked absurdly pleased.“Whether Lily is my daughter or not matters little to me. So long as you remain my wife, I ask for nothing more.”Then, he leaned nearer.“Matilda, I can’t tell you how glad I am to hear you speak to me so freely again.”I felt my cheeks burn at his words. How had I never noticed before that he possessed such a silver tongue? After Henry left,

Edmund braced his hand against the door and spoke through gritted teeth. “Didn’t your father say that your new husband would return today? I’ve come to see whether he is good enough for you.”How had I forgotten that? The lie was going to fall apart.I tried to shut the door in his face, but Edmund had evidently lost all sense of shame. He forced his way through the narrow opening before I could stop him.Worse still, he followed me wherever I went.“Matilda, why won’t you take me to him? Unless, of course, there’s something you would rather I did not discover.”By then, he had tried my patience past endurance. I turned and glared at him.“Fine! I’ll take you to him now. Happy?”With no other choice, I led him to the drawing room with the hope that my father might think of some way out of the situation. When I opened the door, I found my father taking tea with a gentleman dressed in a dark green coat. There was something distinctly familiar about him. The moment he saw me, h

I snatched up a dagger and pressed it to his throat.“Where are the old couple and the child your men took today? Answer me!”The bandit leader was so terrified that he wet himself. “Please don’t kill me! My men carried out the raid. I know nothing about the captives!”He did not appear to be lying. I was about to turn to Edmund when I saw that he had begun giving orders. The moment my attention shifted, the bandit drew a hidden blade and lunged at me.“You wretched woman! How dare you threaten me! Go to hell!”Before the dagger could reach me, his head was severed from his body.Edmund’s sword was suddenly slick with blood. The blade had grazed his arm when he moved to shield me, leaving a deep gash. After binding the wound as best I could, I resumed the search. We found no trace of them. The bandits who had taken part in the raid admitted that they had robbed and killed that day, but they could not say whom they had killed or whom they had carried off.The only comfort

The heavy scent of wine washed over me.I turned my head. It was Edmund!Startled, I struggled to pry his arms away.“Sir, you have mistaken me for someone else!”He only held me tighter.“How could I mistake you for someone else, Matilda? I would know you however you're like. You won’t slip away from me again.”Edmund turned me to face him. When our eyes met, he cupped my face and leaned down to kiss me.I seized the moment when he was off his guard and struck the back of his neck.At the time, I had no idea I had come perilously close to committing an offense that could have condemned my entire family. After Edmund lost consciousness, I fled home under the cover of night. My parents were still up. I told them everything that had happened with Edmund. For a long while, neither of them spoke.“Matilda, are you certain?”When I answered with a silent nod, my father let out a weary sigh. Rising to his feet, he placed his hands upon my shoulders.“You must leave at once. Tak

When I heard that Lily was missing, my mind went utterly blank.Ethel was beside herself. She wrung her hands and blamed herself through her tears.I stopped her and ordered her to gather everyone in the household to begin searching for Lily at once.I went into the street to look for her myself. Most of the shopkeepers along that road knew me well. As soon as they heard that Lily was missing, they joined the search. We had gone some distance when, to my astonishment, Lily came running toward me and threw her arms around me.Tears welled up in my eyes. I held her close and looked her over again and again, unable to breathe easily until I was certain she was unharmed.“My darling, what happened? Where were you? You gave me such a fright!”Lily clung tightly to my neck. She was clearly shaken. After she had been soothed, she pointed a trembling little finger toward a distant spot. “Mama, that gentleman brought me back.”I followed Lily’s finger and froze. Was that not the co
