Chapter 3

Author: Adorable Fish
When I heard that Lily was missing, my mind went utterly blank.

Ethel was beside herself. She wrung her hands and blamed herself through her tears.

I stopped her and ordered her to gather everyone in the household to begin searching for Lily at once.

I went into the street to look for her myself.

Most of the shopkeepers along that road knew me well. As soon as they heard that Lily was missing, they joined the search.

We had gone some distance when, to my astonishment, Lily came running toward me and threw her arms around me.

Tears welled up in my eyes. I held her close and looked her over again and again, unable to breathe easily until I was certain she was unharmed.

“My darling, what happened? Where were you? You gave me such a fright!”

Lily clung tightly to my neck. She was clearly shaken.

After she had been soothed, she pointed a trembling little finger toward a distant spot.

“Mama, that gentleman brought me back.”

I followed Lily’s finger and froze.

Was that not the coachman who had once served Edmund?

He had been the very man holding the reins when I saw Edmund off in his carriage all those years ago.

That only meant that the person inside that carriage was…

I dared not think about it.

I hastily adjusted my veil and, propriety forgotten, turned to make my escape with Lily in my arms.

Before I could leave, however, a voice called after me.

“Are you the child’s mother? Is this how you thank someone who has returned her safely to you?”

I would have known that voice anywhere.

It was Edmund Montmirail.

Part of me longed to march straight up to the carriage and demand an explanation, but I could not risk him taking Lily away from me. I had no choice but to hold my tongue and murmur my thanks.

Seeing my humble gratitude, the person in the carriage let the matter rest.

I broke into a cold sweat as I carried Lily home.

She sucked contentedly on her stick of honeyed apple and poked my cheek with a tiny finger.

“Mama, you’re blushing!”

As soon as we returned home, my parents took turns sweeping Lily into their arms.

It was not until after supper that I managed to wrest my daughter from their grasp.

“Darling, did the gentleman in the carriage ask you any questions? Do you remember?”

Most three-year-olds did not remember such things, but Lily possessed a remarkable memory.

This time, however, she disappointed me.

“Hmm… I don’t remember. I only remember he was a very handsome gentleman!”

Wonderful! She had inherited my weakness for a handsome face.

That told me absolutely nothing.

I decided at once that Lily would not be leaving the house for the next few days. I also set my contacts along the trade routes to inquire whether any wealthy merchant or official had lately arrived from the capital.

After making inquiries, however, none of them could tell me anything.

I had no option but to keep Lily and myself hidden at home.

Two days later, the governor called at our house and asked to speak with me as the head of the merchants’ guild.

Portshire was a coastal city. The king wished to expand the kingdom’s maritime trade. A distinguished gentleman had therefore been sent from the capital to oversee the undertaking.

My nails nearly pierced my palms.

“My Lord, may I ask who this gentleman from the capital is?”

“A prince, perhaps, or an heir to some great noble house. I don’t recall his precise title, but he is certainly a member of the royal family.”

The moment I heard that, my uneasiness subsided. I agreed to attend the banquet that very evening.

After all, Edmund was a Montmirail, not a Neville.

Yet the instant I entered the banquet hall, I stopped dead.

The man seated in the place of honor was none other than Edmund.

The very moment our eyes were about to meet, I withdrew my foot and turned swiftly towards the privy.

Seated upon the commode, I still could not believe what I had seen.

Did Edmund belong to the royal family?

I needed to avoid him at all costs. If he learned of Lily’s existence, he would surely take her from me!

No trading venture was worth that risk.

I decided to remain in the privy until the banquet was over.

Perhaps I had been there too long, for I somehow fell asleep.

When I awoke, the noise outside had ceased. The banquet must have ended.

I opened the door quietly and was just about to slip away when a drunken man seized me from behind.

“Matilda, how much longer do you intend to hide from me?”

My knees were scarcely steady as I left the room. Once I was certain I was alone, I drew a small silver whistle from inside my gown.Henry had given it to me before his departure. He had told me to use it if I ever found myself in danger. With no better hope, I raised it to my lips and blew.Almost at once, a dark figure stepped from the shadows.“Ms. Dauchy.”Startled, I pressed a hand to my chest to calm myself down.“So he left one of his guards behind. Anyway, can you get word to him in three days? I have something urgent to tell him.”The man bowed his head.“What message would you have me carry to His Majesty, Ms. Dauchy?”I told him everything that had happened that day and urged him to deliver the news without delay. When I returned home, my parents and I agreed that we should divide our chances. They would flee north, while I took Lily south. For the next two days, we behaved as though nothing had happened. I spent each day in tears.By the final day, our lack of

Henry left.He was not, of course, driven away by me. He had left because the ministers at court had finally discovered that their king was missing. Before his departure, Henry came to my door once more.“Matilda, I hope you’ll give the matter some thought. I’ll return before long to take you and Lily with me.”By then, he had tried my patience thoroughly. Lily had been sleeping poorly ever since her fright, which had left me in a most ill humor.“I told you, Lily isn’t your daughter. Must you be so tiresome?”As soon as I said that, I regretted it at once.He was the king.Yet instead of taking offence, he looked absurdly pleased.“Whether Lily is my daughter or not matters little to me. So long as you remain my wife, I ask for nothing more.”Then, he leaned nearer.“Matilda, I can’t tell you how glad I am to hear you speak to me so freely again.”I felt my cheeks burn at his words. How had I never noticed before that he possessed such a silver tongue? After Henry left,

Edmund braced his hand against the door and spoke through gritted teeth. “Didn’t your father say that your new husband would return today? I’ve come to see whether he is good enough for you.”How had I forgotten that? The lie was going to fall apart.I tried to shut the door in his face, but Edmund had evidently lost all sense of shame. He forced his way through the narrow opening before I could stop him.Worse still, he followed me wherever I went.“Matilda, why won’t you take me to him? Unless, of course, there’s something you would rather I did not discover.”By then, he had tried my patience past endurance. I turned and glared at him.“Fine! I’ll take you to him now. Happy?”With no other choice, I led him to the drawing room with the hope that my father might think of some way out of the situation. When I opened the door, I found my father taking tea with a gentleman dressed in a dark green coat. There was something distinctly familiar about him. The moment he saw me, h

I snatched up a dagger and pressed it to his throat.“Where are the old couple and the child your men took today? Answer me!”The bandit leader was so terrified that he wet himself. “Please don’t kill me! My men carried out the raid. I know nothing about the captives!”He did not appear to be lying. I was about to turn to Edmund when I saw that he had begun giving orders. The moment my attention shifted, the bandit drew a hidden blade and lunged at me.“You wretched woman! How dare you threaten me! Go to hell!”Before the dagger could reach me, his head was severed from his body.Edmund’s sword was suddenly slick with blood. The blade had grazed his arm when he moved to shield me, leaving a deep gash. After binding the wound as best I could, I resumed the search. We found no trace of them. The bandits who had taken part in the raid admitted that they had robbed and killed that day, but they could not say whom they had killed or whom they had carried off.The only comfort

The heavy scent of wine washed over me.I turned my head. It was Edmund!Startled, I struggled to pry his arms away.“Sir, you have mistaken me for someone else!”He only held me tighter.“How could I mistake you for someone else, Matilda? I would know you however you're like. You won’t slip away from me again.”Edmund turned me to face him. When our eyes met, he cupped my face and leaned down to kiss me.I seized the moment when he was off his guard and struck the back of his neck.At the time, I had no idea I had come perilously close to committing an offense that could have condemned my entire family. After Edmund lost consciousness, I fled home under the cover of night. My parents were still up. I told them everything that had happened with Edmund. For a long while, neither of them spoke.“Matilda, are you certain?”When I answered with a silent nod, my father let out a weary sigh. Rising to his feet, he placed his hands upon my shoulders.“You must leave at once. Tak
