Chapter 3

Author: Skye C
I practically smashed the doors of the Rossi estate open.

In the grand hall, my father lay pale on the sofa, clutching his chest in agony, gasping for air.

My mother was on her knees next to him, trembling as she cried.

"Where is the doctor?!" I rushed over, holding my dad's ice-cold hand with shaking fingers. "I told the assistant my dad has a history of heart issues. There's supposed to be a doctor on site at all times!"

My mother sobbed, barely able to speak. "The doctor was here... but... but Marcello called him away..."

My heart dropped into a block of ice.

Just then, the door to the adjacent room opened.

Valerie was leaning softly against Marcello's chest.

Marcello was looking down at her hand, his voice gentle. "Does it still hurt?"

I stared at them, dead-eyed.

My father was out here fighting for his life, and he took the only doctor away to flirt with another woman?

Anger completely snapped my sanity.

I lunged forward, raised my hand, and slapped him with everything I had.

A resounding slap echoed through the hall.

A red mark rapidly formed on Marcello's face.

The entire hall went dead silent.

I was shaking, my eyes bloodshot as I pointed at him. "Marcello, are you insane?! My dad is having a heart attack, and you called the doctor away?!"

"You said you'd take good care of them. Is this how you take care of them?!"

Marcello's head was knocked to the side.

Before he could say a word, Valerie suddenly started crying her weak, fragile tears.

"Cora, don't blame Marcello. I accidentally cut my finger earlier." She held up an index finger wrapped in a Band-Aid, tears in her eyes. "Marcello was afraid I'd get tetanus, so he had the doctor look at me first..."

I laughed out loud from pure rage. "Because you got a little scratch, you stole an emergency doctor from a man having a heart attack?!"

"Enough!"

Marcello shielded Valerie behind him, looking down at me from his high horse.

"I'll let this slap slide."

"But Cora, you're about to become the Don's wife. You can't act like a shrew. Your father just has an old condition; he'll be fine with some meds. But Valerie plays the piano. If her finger gets infected, can you take responsibility for that?"

Plays the piano.

I looked at this man I had loved for three years, and I felt nothing but absolute disgust.

In his eyes, my father's life wasn't worth as much as Valerie's piano-playing finger.

"Cora..." From the sofa, my father weakly reached out to me, his voice faint. "Don't... don't make the Don angry... Dad is fine..."

Seeing my father struggling to breathe yet still trying to appease them for my sake, my tears finally fell.

Watching me cry, Marcello seemed to think I'd thrown enough of a fit.

He sighed, stepped forward, and opened his arms to hug me.

"Alright, stop being mad. I'll have the doctor look at your father right now." His tone held a hint of charitable forgiveness.

I stepped back in disgust, avoiding his touch.

"Don't touch me."

I ignored his instantly darkening expression and pulled out my phone.

"Hello, 911? This is the Rossi Estate. I need an ambulance. Yes, a heart attack."

I hung up and looked at Marcello coldly.

"From now on, whether my father lives or dies is none of your concern, Don."

Half an hour later, I had my father transferred to a downtown hospital.

By the next afternoon, his condition finally stabilized.

I took a cab back to the estate alone to pack the rest of my things.

Since I was leaving, I was leaving for good.

I had just shoved a few clothes into my suitcase when my phone rang.

It was my wedding planner.

"Miss Cora, I'm sorry to bother you." The planner sounded awkward. "Mr. Marcello just instructed us to cancel the VIP main table seats reserved for your parents. I wanted to verify with you..."

I hung up the phone.

The door opened just then, and Marcello walked in.

I gripped my phone tight, giving him a cold stare.

"Did you cancel my parents' seats at the reception?"

I never thought I'd see Marcello again. And I definitely didn't expect to see him like this.A year later, under the warm Texas sun, he rolled toward me in a wheelchair. He wore a trench coat, but none of his former swagger remained. He was too thin, his cheekbones jutting out, making his handsome face look somewhat dark and hollow.Seeing me, a flush of color returned to his pale face.Tears shined in his eyes as he spoke, his voice incredibly rough:"Cora...""I had the best designers make the dress you actually wanted.""You didn't like the old ring, so I bought an even better one.""I kicked Valerie out. I swear she'll never set foot in New York or anywhere near us again.""I truly love you. I really want to be your husband.""I thought... I thought you were going to be my wife."I stood there, silent for a moment, before replying:"When my parents traveled halfway across the country to New York to plan our wedding...""I thought I was going to be your wife, too.""Turns out I was

Back at the hospital, Mrs. Rossi stared at her phone, stunned.Beside her, Valerie's shrill crying echoed in the hallway. She looked up and snapped at her with pure disdain:"Marcello is in surgery. He can't see your little act right now, so you can drop it!"Valerie's face stiffened, then she looked at Mrs. Rossi with tear-filled eyes."Mrs. Rossi, what do you mean? I'm just worried about Marcello."Mrs. Rossi looked at her, laughing coldly."You think I can't see through your pathetic acting?""I only favored you and made Cora's life hell because I didn't like her. I thought she had Marcello under a spell.""Looking back, I invited a wolf into my home. And now karma's caught up..."Valerie tried to argue, but the operating room doors swung open.Mrs. Rossi forgot all about her and rushed forward."Doctor! Doctor, how is he?"The doctor pulled off his mask and looked at them."His vitals are stable, but..."Under their tense gazes, the doctor spoke grimly:"But his legs have sustained

My thoughts snapped back from the past. On the phone, his mother's angry shouting had turned into begging:"Cora, it's my fault. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have made things hard for you. But Marcello really cares about you.""You didn't show up to the wedding. Valerie put on the dress he bought for you.""When Marcello saw her, he wrecked the entire venue. Valerie told him you left, and he screamed that he didn't believe it.""He rushed out of the estate like a madman to find you, and then... and then... he got ambushed by a rival family... he was in a terrible car crash...""Right before he passed out, he was calling your name.""Cora, I'm begging you. Just come see Marcello, please?""He... he might not make it this time..."She couldn't speak anymore; only the sound of her painful sobbing came through. I gripped my phone, my knuckles turning white.Just before my nails dug into my palms, someone gently held my hand.I turned and saw the worried looks on my parents' faces. My mo

I cut her off directly:"I've already broken off my engagement with Marcello.""If you need something, go find Valerie.""You always looked down on me anyway, and wanted her to be the Don's wife, didn't you?"On the other end of the line, Mrs. Rossi shrieked with anger:"Cora, what is the meaning of this?!""Do you know how much Marcello gave up for you?""He almost went to war with the entire family just to marry you. Now that he's in trouble, this is your attitude?!"I stayed silent, thinking back to when Marcello and I first got together.Back then, I only thought he was rich; I didn't know he was a mafia boss.Three months into our relationship, a family Underboss came to see me. He didn't do the cliché thing and slide me a check. He just sat there, looked me up and down. Then, he took a drag of his cigar and said elegantly:"Miss Cora, I hear you're from a small town in Texas?""I don't know if you're familiar with the concept of marrying within one's class.""I admit, you're pret

Marcello stood with one hand in his dress pants pocket, silent for a moment before speaking."Didn't you say they were leaving soon? I figured it's better if they don't attend." He said it like it was the most logical thing in the world. "Tomorrow's banquet will be full of mafia elites and political heavyweights. Your parents' country manners wouldn't fit in with that crowd at all."He took a step closer, his tone persuasive. "What if they accidentally offend someone from the Commission? I'm doing this for their own good."I looked at the man in front of me and realized it clearer than ever: he looked down on my parents, and deep down, he probably looked down on me, too."You really are a thoughtful son-in-law," I smirked, offering a smile dripping with sarcasm.I turned around, didn't look at him again, and walked straight into the walk-in closet to keep packing my personal clothes into my suitcase.Marcello followed me in.He seemed to finally notice how abnormally cold I was being.
