Chapter 2

Autor: Skye C
I flipped over abruptly, dodging Marcello's touch.

That perfume of Valerie's on him made me sick.

"What? I figured you'd spend the whole night playing hero for your precious little sister." I looked at him mockingly.

Marcello frowned, tearing off his tie in frustration.

"Cora, can you stop being so bitter? I told you, she was scared. I only look at her as a sister."

"A sister?" I scoffed coldly.

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand, opened Instagram, and shoved the screen right in his face.

"Is this how you usually bond with your sister?"

On the screen was a post Valerie had made half an hour ago.

In the photo, bathed in dim, romantic lighting, she and Marcello had their fingers intertwined.

Her face was inches from his lips, and the caption read: "There is always that one person who becomes your hero when you're most afraid."

Marcello's face changed instantly.

He reached out to snatch the phone, but I pulled it back.

"It's just a joke," he said, running a frustrated hand through his hair. "Valerie's ex-boyfriend was there. She was just trying to make him jealous. I didn't know she posted it online. If it bothers you, I'll have her take it down right now."

I put my phone away and smiled. "No need."

Since I'd already decided to leave him, why bother fighting over it?

But my leniency didn't win me a smile.

Marcello stared at me coldly, his tone turning dangerous. "What does that mean? You don't care if people see this picture?"

"I don't care at all."

Marcello stood up with a dark expression and snatched his suit jacket. "I'm sleeping in the guest room."

With a massive bang, the bedroom door slammed shut.

I looked at the empty room, feeling hollow inside.

But this time, I didn't cry.

By noon the next day, I started coordinating with my publisher about leaving New York.

Out of nowhere, Marcello actually called me and arranged a family dinner.

"I thought about it last night. I know you're still mad about me being late, so bring your parents over today. Let's have dinner together."

I wanted to refuse, but my parents didn't want to make things worse, so they dragged me to the estate.

However, the moment I pushed open the private dining room door, I saw Valerie sitting right next to Marcello, beaming.

Marcello looked uncomfortable for a split second. "I didn't invite her, she just..."

I didn't want to hear his excuses.

I just wanted to get this dinner over with.

"Hi Cora. And Mr. and Mrs. Miller, right?" Valerie swirled her red wine, her eyes judging my parents' slightly stiff attire. "I hear you're from Texas? Must be pretty barren down there."

My dad gave a nervous smile. "It's fine. The air is nice."

As dinner went on, the atmosphere grew stifling.

Valerie was cutting her steak when she suddenly covered her mouth and giggled.

"Oh, Mrs. Miller, you don't use that fork for the escargot." She pointed mockingly at the silverware in my mother's hand. "Oh my god, I guess you don't eat things like this down there? The way you hold your silverware is just..."

I gripped my knife and fork.

"Valerie, shut your mouth," I glared at her, my voice like ice.

"Cora, I'm just trying to help," Valerie looked at Marcello, playing the victim. "If the Don's in-laws don't even know basic table manners, it's going to embarrass Marcello at family banquets."

I looked at Marcello.

He kept cutting his steak, saying absolutely nothing.

He didn't just fail to stop her; his silence endorsed the humiliation.

My father's face flushed deep red. His hand trembled, and he knocked over his wine glass.

Dark red liquid spilled all over his faded, washed-out shirt.

"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." My dad frantically grabbed a napkin to wipe it.

Seeing my father look so small and humiliated, my eyes stung.

I snatched the napkin from his hand and threw it on the table.

"Dad, don't wipe it. We can't afford to eat at a place like this."

I took my parents' hands. "Let's go."

Marcello finally looked up, his eyes dark. "Cora, sit down."

I ignored him and walked out of the room with my parents, never looking back.

He called me several times, and I declined every single one.

That afternoon, I had to meet my agent over an urgent rights issue for my new book.

While I was figuring out how to keep my parents occupied, Marcello's assistant suddenly showed up, saying the Don wanted to apologize and offered to give my parents a tour of the Rossi estate.

"Don't worry, the Don will take good care of them."

Not wanting to put me in a tough spot, my parents agreed to go.

I thought Marcello would at least maintain basic decency.

But at 8 PM.

Just as I walked out of my agent's office, my phone rang.

It was my mom.

As soon as I answered, I heard her desperate sobbing.

"Cora! Come quick! Your dad's having a heart attack! He collapsed!"

My mind exploded. I almost couldn't stand.

I never thought I'd see Marcello again. And I definitely didn't expect to see him like this.A year later, under the warm Texas sun, he rolled toward me in a wheelchair. He wore a trench coat, but none of his former swagger remained. He was too thin, his cheekbones jutting out, making his handsome face look somewhat dark and hollow.Seeing me, a flush of color returned to his pale face.Tears shined in his eyes as he spoke, his voice incredibly rough:"Cora...""I had the best designers make the dress you actually wanted.""You didn't like the old ring, so I bought an even better one.""I kicked Valerie out. I swear she'll never set foot in New York or anywhere near us again.""I truly love you. I really want to be your husband.""I thought... I thought you were going to be my wife."I stood there, silent for a moment, before replying:"When my parents traveled halfway across the country to New York to plan our wedding...""I thought I was going to be your wife, too.""Turns out I was

Back at the hospital, Mrs. Rossi stared at her phone, stunned.Beside her, Valerie's shrill crying echoed in the hallway. She looked up and snapped at her with pure disdain:"Marcello is in surgery. He can't see your little act right now, so you can drop it!"Valerie's face stiffened, then she looked at Mrs. Rossi with tear-filled eyes."Mrs. Rossi, what do you mean? I'm just worried about Marcello."Mrs. Rossi looked at her, laughing coldly."You think I can't see through your pathetic acting?""I only favored you and made Cora's life hell because I didn't like her. I thought she had Marcello under a spell.""Looking back, I invited a wolf into my home. And now karma's caught up..."Valerie tried to argue, but the operating room doors swung open.Mrs. Rossi forgot all about her and rushed forward."Doctor! Doctor, how is he?"The doctor pulled off his mask and looked at them."His vitals are stable, but..."Under their tense gazes, the doctor spoke grimly:"But his legs have sustained

My thoughts snapped back from the past. On the phone, his mother's angry shouting had turned into begging:"Cora, it's my fault. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have made things hard for you. But Marcello really cares about you.""You didn't show up to the wedding. Valerie put on the dress he bought for you.""When Marcello saw her, he wrecked the entire venue. Valerie told him you left, and he screamed that he didn't believe it.""He rushed out of the estate like a madman to find you, and then... and then... he got ambushed by a rival family... he was in a terrible car crash...""Right before he passed out, he was calling your name.""Cora, I'm begging you. Just come see Marcello, please?""He... he might not make it this time..."She couldn't speak anymore; only the sound of her painful sobbing came through. I gripped my phone, my knuckles turning white.Just before my nails dug into my palms, someone gently held my hand.I turned and saw the worried looks on my parents' faces. My mo

I cut her off directly:"I've already broken off my engagement with Marcello.""If you need something, go find Valerie.""You always looked down on me anyway, and wanted her to be the Don's wife, didn't you?"On the other end of the line, Mrs. Rossi shrieked with anger:"Cora, what is the meaning of this?!""Do you know how much Marcello gave up for you?""He almost went to war with the entire family just to marry you. Now that he's in trouble, this is your attitude?!"I stayed silent, thinking back to when Marcello and I first got together.Back then, I only thought he was rich; I didn't know he was a mafia boss.Three months into our relationship, a family Underboss came to see me. He didn't do the cliché thing and slide me a check. He just sat there, looked me up and down. Then, he took a drag of his cigar and said elegantly:"Miss Cora, I hear you're from a small town in Texas?""I don't know if you're familiar with the concept of marrying within one's class.""I admit, you're pret

Marcello stood with one hand in his dress pants pocket, silent for a moment before speaking."Didn't you say they were leaving soon? I figured it's better if they don't attend." He said it like it was the most logical thing in the world. "Tomorrow's banquet will be full of mafia elites and political heavyweights. Your parents' country manners wouldn't fit in with that crowd at all."He took a step closer, his tone persuasive. "What if they accidentally offend someone from the Commission? I'm doing this for their own good."I looked at the man in front of me and realized it clearer than ever: he looked down on my parents, and deep down, he probably looked down on me, too."You really are a thoughtful son-in-law," I smirked, offering a smile dripping with sarcasm.I turned around, didn't look at him again, and walked straight into the walk-in closet to keep packing my personal clothes into my suitcase.Marcello followed me in.He seemed to finally notice how abnormally cold I was being.

I practically smashed the doors of the Rossi estate open.In the grand hall, my father lay pale on the sofa, clutching his chest in agony, gasping for air.My mother was on her knees next to him, trembling as she cried."Where is the doctor?!" I rushed over, holding my dad's ice-cold hand with shaking fingers. "I told the assistant my dad has a history of heart issues. There's supposed to be a doctor on site at all times!"My mother sobbed, barely able to speak. "The doctor was here... but... but Marcello called him away..."My heart dropped into a block of ice.Just then, the door to the adjacent room opened.Valerie was leaning softly against Marcello's chest.Marcello was looking down at her hand, his voice gentle. "Does it still hurt?"I stared at them, dead-eyed.My father was out here fighting for his life, and he took the only doctor away to flirt with another woman?Anger completely snapped my sanity.I lunged forward, raised my hand, and slapped him with everything I had.A re
