Chapter 1

Evelyn’s POV

My name is Evelyn Carter, and I am 28 years old.

Adrian and I have been married for six years. While today is our anniversary, a cause for celebration and joy, ironically, it's also the worst day of my life. Today, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

My specialist reviewed my test results today, and he broke the frightening news as kindly as he could.

Sitting across from the doctor, my eyes grew wide with apprehension. I held my hands clenched tightly on his desk, as questions tumbled through my mind. Stunned, words eluded me.

He continued. “And so, Evelyn, it’s urgent that you check in for treatment, starting today. There is no time for delay.”

My  thoughts were fragmented. Treatment? Cancer?

I shook my head. “No! I can’t. You don’t understand. Today is our anniversary. I need to be with my husband. Perhaps… tomorrow?”

Adrian’s smiling face filled my mind. I wanted us to celebrate. I had even bought him a luxury watch, his favorite brand, as a gift.

Little did I know, today would be the beginning of a nightmare.

Somehow, I found my way home. Stowed in my tote was the gift for Adrian, nestling next to the damning medical results. Ironically, they represented two different futures for me, entire worlds apart.

I stumbled inside, through the front door, fighting through the pain. As soon as I walked in, I noticed a pair of high-end heels in the entryway.

Why would there be stray women's heels in our house?

Throughout our marriage, Adrian and I always had a strong relationship. I had never suspected him of doing anything behind my back. So, when I saw the familiar coat, I breathed a sigh of relief. It was our little son, Liam's, kindergarten teacher's coat.

But why would Liam's teacher be here? I frowned. That was odd.

Taking my medical records out of the bag, I pressed them into my pocket before putting on my house slippers. Even this simple action left me feeling weak.

I went into the living room. There was no-one about. With today being a special day, I had given our domestic staff the day off. I had planned for it to just be us, our little family, together to celebrate. That was before. Before my doctor’s appointment, when my world came crashing down.

The large house felt eerily empty, as I headed for the study.

“Stop it!” A woman’s soft voice was audible, from down the hallway. A teasing, playful voice.

I froze at the door to the study, hearing the voices inside.

“Are you willing to lose? Can’t you take the bet?” A man’s voice followed. It was Adrian.

What bet? Why were they speaking so intimately?

I stood silently at the door, not daring to open it, listening carefully. The door was almost fully closed, but not quite. Through the crack, I could see inside. Normally, there only a typical study, simply decorated with a desk and a bookshelf filled with professional books.

But what was seared into my brain was the sight of Adrian, sitting closely beside Vivian, Liam’s kindergarten teacher.

Adrian’s smile was gentle and affectionate, and the look in his eyes as he gazed at Vivian was filled with tenderness and devotion. That was a look he had never shown me!

“Adrian! You’re married! How could I kiss you?” Vivian playfully lowered her gaze, a smile tugging at her lips

Who she’s going to kiss?

Those words exploded in my mind like fireworks. My brain went numb, unable to process what I was hearing.

No, this couldn’t be true!

Could I have heard wrong?

Adrian wouldn't let her kiss him… would he?

I moved closer, my eyes fixed on them through the crack in the door, praying that I had misheard.

Then, I heard my little boy’s voice. “If Miss Vivian loses, she has to kiss Daddy and then me too!” Liam said, standing beside them.

My heart almost broke. He was just a small child and probably didn’t understand the full meaning of the game.

“Alright, alright, Daddy first, then it's your turn!” Vivian said, with feigned reluctance.

Then she leaned in and placed a light kiss on Adrian’s chiseled cheek. Her soft auburn curls brushed his face.

I was stunned that Adrian didn’t stop her, making no move to avoid the intimate contact. We had always treated each other with respect during our marriage. I had never imagined he would do such a thing. The awful scene unfolding, shocked me beyond words.

Yet, worse was to come. Adrian pulled Vivian in closer. His look of pleasure struck me like a lightning bolt. Why had he never looked at me like that?

His lips sought hers and they locked in a kiss. Vivian initially resisted, but soon surrendered. The kiss deepened, prolonged, passionate.

Liam appeared overjoyed. “Yeah Dad kissed her! Miss Vivian can be my new mom!” he cried.

Adrian and Vivian relaxed and smiled at Liam as  he danced around them.

“My mom won’t let me eat fried chicken, or burgers, but Miss Vivian lets me have whatever I want. I want you to be my new mom!” he told her.

Liam’s words cut into me like daggers. He has asthma and a frail constitution, and I’ve always followed medical advice to control his diet. His asthma dictates what food he can safely eat, so to ensure his meals were nutritious and delicious, I took a nutritionist course. But both he and his father love junk food and fast food, so I’m always fighting an uphill battle.

I had no idea he would hate me this much. But then,  he’s just a child — of course he would prefer someone who lets him eat tasty food, I consoled myself.

“Alright, Adrian, don’t. Not in front of Liam,” Vivian said, pushing Adrian away, pretending to be shy.

Adrian let go of her, brushing his thumb over her lips. “Don’t you like it?”

She hesitated but her eyes gave away everything.

“I’ll settle things with that woman soon, I promise. Once the company stabilizes, I’ll divorce her and marry you. Liam wants you as his mom, too,” Adrian said, holding her hands tenderly

I struggled to breathe. Tears slid down my face, but more than anything, I felt a tearing rage.

Chapter 2
Evelyn’s POVI never imagined that my husband would cheat on me, especially in our own home. But it wasn’t just Adrian wanting to replace me. Liam’s words had cut the deepest. My little son!Right now, all I wanted was for Liam to show even a little bit of loyalty, but his next words shattered that hope entirely. He clapped his hands excitedly and rushed into Vivian's arms with a huge grin, as she returned his hug."That's good, Daddy! We don’t need that bad mommy! She always tells me what to do. And I hate the horrid food she makes me eat. I want hamburgers and my favorite fried chicken, with Miss Vivian!"I couldn't believe what I was hearing. After Liam’s health issues were diagnosed, I gave up everything else, dedicating my life to him. And why not? He was like my most precious possession. His diet was strictly controlled, and I did everything I could to keep him safe and healthy. So, how could he hate me so much? The most heartbreaking words came next."Miss Vivian, you should b

Chapter 3
Evelyn’s POV"Since you’ve proposed divorce, I assume the Carter family doesn't need to carve up my assets," Adrian stated, his words dripping with arrogance.I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could he be so shameless? Doesn't he understand why we're getting divorced? It wasn’t about assets. Not for me, anyway."I’ve already told you, if you resist this divorce, I'll make sure everyone knows about your affair. Think carefully, Adrian," I cautioned.I held Adrian’s gaze without hesitation. Even though he was still the handsome man I had fallen for, dark-haired, straight black eyebrows over light brown eyes, full cupid-bow lips, and a toned physique, I no longer enjoyed the sight of him. His good looks no longer held any appeal. At this point, I had lost all hope. Six years of marriage, and only now have I discovered what kind of person Adrian truly was."Well, Evelyn, we don't have to divorce. Let's pretend what happened just now never occurred. We can still keep this going, a

Chapter 4
Evelyn’s POVI locked the watch in a drawer in my dresser and began packing my belongings, hoping that when the divorce became final, I could leave as quickly as possible. The shapeless dresses I had bought to make it easier to take care of our son now felt like they represented how I had lost myself for their sake. Denying my individuality for the sake of the family. A family now in tatters.Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from the doctor. It was a contact card, followed by a message:“Mrs. Whitman, we've scheduled a follow-up check-up for you. As you know, there’s still a chance for therapy, if we act now.”I hesitated before typing back: "I'll consider it."A month ago, I went to the hospital for a check-up due to some health issues. Today, besides being my wedding anniversary, I also went to pick up those results. That’s when I learned that it was early-stage stomach cancer. Then, to spare Adrian any pain, I decided to wait before starting treatment, planning to spend t

Chapter 5
Adrian's POVIt was just a little harmless interaction with Vivian. A light-hearted dalliance. What successful man doesn't have eager women hanging around him? I couldn’t understand why Evelyn was making such a big deal out of it.She had always been so obedient as a wife, and I treated her with due affection and care. What could she possibly be unhappy about? Okay, so, if she didn’t like me being around other women, I could easily cut ties with Vivian.“You’re crazy. Do you expect me to stay faithful to you?” Evelyn’s voice was cold, distant.“What —” I was furious. How could she be like this? She was becoming more and more unreasonable.“We’ve already registered for divorce, Adrian. Just six more months, and then we’ll be done for good. Who I chose to see is none of your business,” she said, in sharp tones.“The cooling-off period hasn’t ended yet, so we’re not officially divorced. Evelyn, are you seriously going to put the blame on me?”Evelyn pulled away from the doctor and laughe

Chapter 6
Evelyn's POVWhile he knew I was concerned about some health issues and having tests, Adrian still doesn’t know that I have been diagnosed with cancer, and he never bothers to ask how I was doing. My medical issues don’t seem to concern him.I can feel the undercurrent of his anger but what I don’t understand is why he’s so upset? If he’s already chosen Vivian, then why does he care so much about seeing me with Nate? Isn’t our marriage over? We’re now legally separated and just waiting for the final papers to be signed. I know the divorce is inevitable, and honestly, I’m done with Adrian. He can think whatever he wants, but I’m just trying to get everything over with, cleanly and without further conflict.Today, I headed to Liam’s preschool for their open day. It’s a chance for parents to see what their children are learning, to meet the teachers, and to talk with other parents. I’d been planning this day for a while, and I wasn’t going to let the matter of the divorce affect it.But

Chapter 7
Evelyn's POVThe two young children are standing together, beside me. Sophie flinched at Liam’s intimidating tone and I wanted to comfort her. Sophie looks at me before turning her attention back to Liam."She’s your mom. Why are you calling her bad?" Sophie sounded confused.I sighed. In Liam’s eyes, I had always been the villain. After what happened yesterday, I had already given up trying to change that."I really like your mom," said Sophie in her sweet little voice. "If you don’t want her, can she be my mom, instead?" Though she was frail, there was an inexplicable warmth about her. I never expected to feel such genuine affection from a child I didn’t even know. Unlike my own family. Unlike Liam — who rejects me. I had given him everything, yet hardly ever received any warmth in return.Liam was clearly unhappy about Sophie’s words. He stepped closer and pushed her forcefully. She might have been older than him, maybe a year older, but as small and delicate as she was, she took

Chapter 8
Evelyn's POVThe next day was my mother-in-law, Margot’s, birthday. For six years of marriage, I had always been the one responsible for arranging everything on this day — her gift, the cake, the banquet. Nothing was ever left out. This year was no exception.During dinner, everyone sat around the table, which was covered with high-end dishes — Australian lobster, abalone, deep-sea crab, and other delicious fare.“Evelyn, I heard that you and Adrian are considering having a second child?” Margot asked with a pleasant smile, her tone gentle as she reached out and took the Australian lobster in front of me, placing it onto her own plate.I raised an eyebrow, glanced at her, and calmly took the lobster back. Then, in a steady voice, I replied, “When did I ever say I wanted a second child?”The atmosphere instantly became tense. Sitting beside me, Adrian’s expression darkened. He shot me a fierce glare.“What kind of attitude is that?” Margot’s smile stiffened, and her tone lost its warmt

Chapter 9
Evelyn's POVSix years ago, why did we get married?I genuinely loved the proposal Adrian had arranged for me, foolishly believing that his feelings were sincere. It was only after our marriage that I saw the truth. Before we got married, Adrian’s company was just starting out, relying heavily on my family’s investment and resources. His family treated me like a goddess, catering to my every whim. But once the marriage was secure, their attitudes shifted. And now, this. At a lovely dinner I had arranged in Margot’s honor."So what? Now that you’ve married into Adrian’s family, you should learn to stand with us." Margot’s voice was icy.I paused at the door, turned back and looked at her. Margot’s expression was filled with scrutiny.Beside her mother, Isabella crossed her arms, her tone sharp and unyielding. "At the end of the day, you’re just an outsider. You have no say in our family matters."I glanced at the lavish dinner table, suppressing the anger bubbling inside me. "What exac

Chapter 10
Evelyn's POVThe next morning, I woke up to see Adrian staring at me with a dark expression. I got out of bed, pulled on a robe, and headed for the kitchen to make some coffee. Adrian was right behind me.“Who gave you permission to go to that bar last night?” he demanded.“I beg your pardon!” I cried. “I don’t need to ask you.”He followed me around the house, berating me. I had to get out. Back in my room, I hastily got dressed and charged out the front door.Adrian followed me outside. “Where do you think you’re going, now?”“Oh, get lost. I’ve got some errands to run,” I countered. I got into my car and drove away. I was headed for the drug store, I had a script to fill, as part of my treatment regimen.I parked, and as I headed for the drug store I saw Adrian’s Cadillac swerving into the parking lot, he was driving like a demon.“Oh, good Lord!” I muttered, feeling really annoyed. On the sidewalk in front of the store entry, he crowded in on me. He reached out to grab my wrist.
