Chapter 4

Author: Pop Pop Popcorn
I didn't look at their furious expressions again.

I went straight to my room and locked the door.

Outside, I could hear them pounding on the door and shouting accusations. I put on my headphones and shut them out completely.

I spent the entire night in a room that felt like an oven.

The aftereffects of my heatstroke came crashing back. I was so dizzy that I could barely stand.

My throat was so dry it felt like it was about to crack. I pushed open my bedroom door, wanting to go to the kitchen for a glass of water.

The moment I stepped into the living room, I saw Melanie curled up in Mom's arms, her eyes swollen and puffy.

"Mom, forget it. Please don't force Yas anymore.

"I'll take responsibility for everything myself. Even if it means ruining my reputation and going to prison. From now on, you can just pretend you never had me as a daughter."

"What are you talking about?"

Mom pulled her into a tighter, protective embrace before turning toward me with a sharp glare.

"As long as I'm still breathing, I won't let anyone destroy you!"

Dad slammed his hand down on the coffee table.

"Yasmine, if you refuse to sign that statement today, get out of this house!"

Henry stormed over and knocked the glass of water out of my hand just as I picked it up.

It hit the floor with a sharp crash, sending shards of glass flying everywhere.

"If you refuse to take the blame for Mel, you're not allowed to go to work!

"Why should Mel's career be ruined while you get to walk away like nothing happened?

"If she can't draw anymore, then you have to lose your job too. That's only fair!"

I steadied myself against the doorframe and looked at my brother.

The whole thing was so absurd that it was almost laughable.

For twenty-two years, no one had ever talked about fairness when it came to my sister and me.

I had cried and questioned them about it before.

Mom said it as though she had every right to. She had always planned to have one son and one daughter, making a perfect family of four.

Then she unexpectedly became pregnant with me.

According to her, my arrival was what shattered the happiness of our family of four.

That was why I had no right to demand fairness.

And yet now, they were the ones lecturing me about fairness.

I laughed, but tears slipped down my face anyway.

Blood seeped from the cracks in my lips.

The tears mixed with the metallic taste of blood as I swallowed them down.

Quentin gently pressed the eggs he had brought that morning against Melanie's swollen eyes.

He didn't even spare a glance at my pale face.

"Yasmine, think carefully.

"If you refuse to sign, you won't be leaving this house today. And I can make sure you disappear from this industry for good.

"If you sign it, we can go back to the way things were. I can even arrange a position for you."

I lowered my eyes and hid my trembling hands behind my back.

I swallowed the metallic taste of blood in my throat and pretended to finally accept my fate and give in.

"Okay. I'll sign it."

My voice was hoarse as I forced the words out.

"But I need to stop by the office first and ask my supervisor for leave. Then I'll go to Starline Media and meet you."

The moment they heard me finally agree, the tension in everyone's faces eased.

Mom let out a cold snort.

"At least you have some conscience."

Henry stepped aside, visibly relieved.

"You should have been this sensible from the beginning."

I turned and walked back to my room.

Before leaving, I glanced at the winter melon still lying in the corner.

I grabbed my backpack and headed downstairs.

A rideshare was waiting downstairs.

On the way, Quentin sent me a message.

"Starline Media's legal director, Ms. Coleman, will be there too. When you get to the conference room, When you get to the conference room, be careful about what you say. Once you've signed the statement, I'll take you out for the Buffalo Wings you wanted and have the latest quiet air conditioner installed in your room."

But now, the spicy sliced beef didn't matter.

Neither did the air conditioner.

My family, my lover, none of them mattered anymore.

When I arrived at Starline Media, I didn't go upstairs.

Instead, I took a brown envelope from my bag and paid a cleaner five dollars to deliver it to Ms. Coleman, Starline Media's legal director.

Then I got back into the rideshare.

"Could you change the destination to the train station, please?"

The car merged into traffic.

I opened my chat with Quentin.

"I've already delivered what you wanted."

I hit Send, then blocked him without hesitation.

After that, I left the family group chat, "Happy Family."

From that moment on, I was heading toward a spring without them.

Yasmine's POVIt was October. The rainy season arrived in Veymont without warning, bringing a refreshing coolness that seemed to wash everything clean. After the celebratory dinner for the successful delivery of the new project, Cassian and I walked out of the restaurant side by side."Everyone, get home safely. You can all come in an hour late tomorrow morning," Cassian said with a smile as the team began to disperse. When he turned back to me, he was already holding a huge black long-handled umbrella. He tilted it slightly toward me, shielding me from every stray drop of rain."Let's go. My car's parked across the street. I'll drive you back to the dorm."Just as we were about to step down from the stairs, three disheveled figures suddenly rushed out of the shadows. It was Vivian, Melanie, and Quentin, who reeked of alcohol.I hadn't seen them in six months, and they looked so haggard that I could barely recognize them. Most of Vivian's hair had turned white.Melanie's long hair was

To pay off their debts and hopefully secure a lighter sentence for Henry, the Xavier residence was seized and auctioned off by the court. On moving day, a red-alert heat warning was issued as temperatures climbed to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.Crisscrossed strips bearing the court's official seal covered the mahogany front door.Vivian pushed Elliot in a wheelchair. After suffering a stroke, he was partially paralyzed, with no sensation on one side of his body.Melanie followed behind them, carrying two battered woven bags. The three of them moved into a run-down apartment in an old neighborhood. It was on the sixth floor, the top floor of the building, and there was no elevator. There was no air conditioning, either. The corrugated metal roof had baked under the sun all day, turning the apartment into a sweltering oven.Mold stained the corners of the walls, and the stench from the drains wafted back up into the apartment."It's so damn hot!"The moment Melanie stepped inside, the wave of

Yasmine's POVOutside Veymont train station, a heavy rainstorm had just passed. The dark clouds had cleared, leaving behind the faintest arc of a rainbow.A cool breeze swept over me, carrying away the heat that had been trapped in my chest for twenty-two years."Yasmine Xavier."I looked up.A car had pulled over by the curb.A man in a lightweight black trench coat stood beside it.It was Cassian Drake, the design director of the branch in Veymont. He was also the first person to appreciate my designs during an online meeting."Mr. Drake."I walked over and greeted him somewhat hesitantly.Cassian skipped the pleasantries. He took my old suitcase and put it in the trunk. When he turned around, he handed me a paper cup printed with Veymont’s signature logo."A black tea, lightly sweetened, at room temperature."Cassian looked at me, his voice calm and steady."It just rained in Veymont, and the temperature dropped by nine degrees Fahrenheit."Your stomach is sensitive. Yasmine's mother, Vivian Bennett, carried over a bowl of freshly made lobster bisque. She sat down beside Melanie on the couch and fed her one spoonful at a time."Mel, eat a little more. You need to regain your strength."You've been through so much these past few days."Once Yas signs the statement today, you'll be cleared of everything."And when you hold your solo exhibition in a few months, I'll have a designer gown made just for you. We'll make sure you look absolutely stunning."Henry sat shirtless at the other end of the couch, absorbed in a video game.Half a chilled watermelon sat on the coffee table. He scooped out a big spoonful of the sweetest flesh from the center and stuffed it into his mouth with a dismissive snort."At least Yasmine is finally useful for something."Otherwise, she'd just be freeloading off the family."If she hadn't thrown a fit over that lousy air conditioner, would the whole family have ended up in this mess?"Once she signs the statement and gets fi

Third-person POVIn the conference room at Starline Media, Quentin paced back and forth in front of the long conference table.Across from him sat Ms. Coleman, the company's legal director. Her face was grim as she stared at the watch on her wrist."Mr. Lawson, where's the outside contractor you said was willing to take full responsibility?"Ms. Coleman tapped her knuckles against the table. Each sharp knock landed like a blow to Quentin's chest."You have three minutes left."The client has already issued a final ultimatum. If you don't put someone forward to take the blame and sign the statement, we'll have no choice but to publicly announce that Melanie is facing legal action over serious allegations of plagiarism and fraud."You know what that means.""She'll be here any second!"Cold sweat broke out on Quentin's forehead as he frantically dialed Yasmine's number again."I confirmed everything with her this morning.
