Chapter 1

Elliot Wendell blocked my path outside the door of Dent Manor. His expression was torn but determined.

I remained silent as the image of reinforced concrete collapsing flashed in my mind. I could see his bloody and mangled spine, and I could almost hear the words he whispered into my ears.

“If I had known that she would die, I would’ve never taken you home.”

That seemed to be his choice.

If he had known how things would turn out, he would have chosen to abandon me from the start.

However, it did not matter.

In the previous timeline, my ten-year marriage to him had been like a nightmare. He hated me, and I resented him. We tormented each other every day and night. It was only in death that we both found release.

With this second chance, I could cut things off before they could sour. Knowing this, I suddenly felt a wave of relief.

I looked at Elliot and calmly nodded. “Alright, then.”

Surprise flashed across his eyes, and the words he had prepared died in his throat.

“What did you say?” he asked almost reflexively.

“I said alright,” I repeated. “Since it’s all a mistake, let’s just forget it. Thank you for bringing me over. I need to get back to campus.”

After that, I turned to leave.

However, he grabbed my wrist and stopped me. “Samantha Kane.”

There was a thread of fear in his voice as he called out to me in a low voice.

“What’s with this attitude? Haven’t you been looking for your family all this time? You’re just going to give up so easily after I said they’re not your family?”

I turned back to look at him and found the whole situation a bit funny.

Had Elliot not spent so much time and effort to spin this tale so that I would give up? So, why was he upset when I was following the script?

“What should I be doing, then?” I asked him. “Are you saying that you lied to me, Elliot? Am I really the Dent family’s daughter?”

After he heard this, the panic in his eyes became clearer. He subconsciously tightened his grip on my wrist.

Then, he looked down to obscure his expression from me.

“We’re done here. Don’t bring this up anymore, and don’t come near the Dent family.”

“Got it.”

I wrestled out of his grasp and massaged my wrist. It had gone red from his vicelike grip.

“I won’t bring it up, and I won’t come close to this place. Are you happy now, Elliot?”

Elliot glanced at my empty hand as if he had lost something important. For a moment, it seemed like he did not know what to do.

He had no idea that I had gone back in time.

In this new timeline, I would not take the same path and become the Dent family’s daughter. Additionally, I would not marry him again.

If he wanted to protect his first love and live his life with her, I would let them be.

“I’m leaving.”

I walked to the bus stop without sparing him another glance.

Behind me, Elliot’s voice rang out, and he sounded a little annoyed.

“Hold it right there! I’ll send you back.”

Elliot did not take me back to my accommodations on campus, though. Instead, he sent me to a high-class apartment building downtown.

As I watched the cityscape fly past me out the window, I suddenly understood something.

In the previous timeline, this had been our home after we got married.

This place held our best memories but also bore witness to how our relationship as a couple crumbled. In the end, there was nothing left but hatred between us.

After the car came to a stop, Elliot undid his seat belt and angled his head toward me.

I regarded his stony expression in the car’s dim interior. However, he no longer spoke as stiffly as he had when we were at the entrance to Dent Manor.

“Get out of the car. We need to talk.”

Three years later, I held a solo art exhibition at a renowned gallery by the Sierra River in Blythe. My exhibition was named “Rebirth.”My paintings featured the lavender fields of Frankfort, the sunflowers of Airreluz, the azure waters of the Mediterranean, and the warm sunlight of Blythe. Every painting was full of life and the love of life. The only thing they lacked was people. My paintings never showcased any individuals. For the past three years, I had been traveling all over Urania and immortalizing various snapshots of scenery in my paintings. I was no longer the Samantha Kane who lived in hate and pain. I was a normal painter who loved life. I used to think that love was a stubborn kind of holding on. I thought that to love meant holding on to each other, even if it caused pain. It was later that I realized true love was letting go; it was letting the other person get what they wanted. In the previous timeline, Elliot had taught me what hatred was. In the

I gripped the report so hard that my knuckles turned white. I did not know how I even felt. Was I sad? It did not seem that way. Was I relieved? It did not really feel that way. I only found fate to be a detestable trickster. Fate had tangled my life with Elliot’s for two timelines and threw every possible misunderstanding and hurt at us. But in the end, it gave us the same rushed and careless ending. “Ms. Kane,” Lincoln said as he took out a velvet box from his bag, “Mr. Wendell left this for you. He told me to give it to you personally if he didn’t come home.”I opened the box numbly. It did not contain some expensive piece of jewelry, just a plain platinum ring. It was a ring from a couple set that I had bought for twenty dollars at some store when I was in university. Back then, Elliot had been disdainful of it. He called it ugly, but still put it on despite that. After that, we broke up, got married, and argued… I did not know where I had thrown my ring. I ne

A year later, I enrolled in the arts university that I had always dreamed of in Frankfort, Gerancia. I majored in oil painting. There, I rented a place with a tiny garden and lived a simple but fulfilling life. I went to classes, painted, and tended my garden. My garden was beautifully bright, and the air there was constantly filled with the fragrance of lavender. I slowly forgot the past and smiled more often. I never saw Elliot again. However, I would receive news of him from classmates who went home. I heard that Elliot had given up on his family’s sizable assets to become a volunteer for various disasters. I heard that he rushed into the most dangerous places to save numerous people. This left him with countless scars as a result. I also heard that someone had asked him why he dedicated his life to this endeavor. According to him, this was his penance. However, none of this had anything to do with me anymore. After graduating, I stayed abroad. I joined a top d

At the same time, I was waiting for my flight in the departure terminal. Just then, I received a text message from my best friend. [It’s all been arranged, Samantha. Don’t worry. There’s no way Elliot will be able to find you. You’ll have a brand new start once you arrive.]I just replied with an “alright” before pulling out my SIM card and dumping it in the trash. It was as if I had put all the grief and entanglements from two timelines into that SIM card. Hereafter, all of that will be gone with the trash and thoroughly buried.I had nearly lost my life. Thus, I repaid the debt I owed to Elliot when he sacrificed himself to save me during that earthquake. From this day forth, Elliot could walk his own path, while I walked mine. I would never again see him in this life. …In the days after Samantha’s disappearance, Elliot’s life lost all color. He became more short-tempered, and this caused Wendell Group to turn upside down. He did not bother to handle the mountaino

I did not answer, but it might as well have been a confession. “Elliot,” I started softly, “it’s all come to an end. In this timeline, you’ve protected the one you wanted to protect. From now on, we’ll be on separate paths. We’ll no longer have anything to do with each other.” “No!” He looked up suddenly, and his eyes were red-rimmed. “Samantha, it’s not like that! Everything I’ve done is for both of us! It’s the only way for us to have another ending—”“We’ve already had our ending.” I interrupted him. “It all ended on the day of the earthquake.”Elliot had more to say, but his phone rang.He looked at the caller ID, and his expression changed. It was Celeste calling. He hesitated for a moment but answered the call. “Hello, Celeste? What? You’re in pain again? Alright, don’t worry. I’ll come over immediately.”After hanging up, Elliot looked at me apologetically. “I have to visit Celeste, Samantha. Rest well. I’ll be back very soon.”Looking at how worried he was, the

I looked at Elliot and felt my heart fall to my stomach. He had forgotten that it was my birthday today too. Celeste and I were born on the same day. However, our lives were wildly different. She lived at the top of society, while I was like the mud under someone’s boot. Elliot immediately ordered the bodyguards to apprehend me. He tossed an army knife before me. His next words were nearly emotionless. “You must bleed even more than Celeste has.”I looked at him in disbelief. “Are you nuts, Elliot Wendell?”I started to struggle violently. All Elliot did was give me a look before ordering the bodyguards to cut me. A sharp sting spread across my arm, and warm blood started flowing out. I gasped from the pain, and tears began to trickle uncontrollably down my face. Then came another cut, and another. I did not know how many times they cut me. The pain had gotten so unbearable that I could feel nothing at all, and my vision became blurry. I looked at Elliot’s unf
