Chapter 3

Author: Maizie
Albert and the principal, Jonathan Humphrey, stared at me sternly.

The police officer, Sam Deacon, asked, “Lucy, does this belong to you?”

I looked at Theo.

Theo’s eyes were red, and he looked at me pleadingly. He was confident that I would help him.

We had grown up together. Whenever he ran into any problem, I would help him. He would always look at me with the same expression.

He was still expecting me to save him at such an important examination.

I pursed my lips and shook my head.

“No.”

Theo gasped and roared at me.

“You’re lying! You’re jealous of Flora and me. It’s clearly you!

“Besides… I grabbed your elbow just now. I bet you stuffed that gadget into my bag at that time!”

I looked at Officer Deacon.

“You can retrieve the surveillance footage at the entrance. I did not touch his bag at all.”

Officer Deacon immediately did that.

Theo did not expect surveillance cameras to be around.

He stared anxiously at the screen. When it was clear that I was not the culprit, he simply looked dejected.

“No… It should be Lucy…”

I ignored him. I asked Officer Deacon, “Can I return to the hall now?”

Officer Deacon nodded. I was brought back to the examination hall.

Even though not much time was left, I managed to complete all the questions on time.

Outside the window, I saw Theo being taken away by Officer Deacon. In the past, Flora was the one who had been taken away.

I wondered how Flora would feel when she saw this.

However, it had nothing to do with me.

After the morning exam ended, since my home is close to the school, I went home to rest. When I walked in, I saw Theo’s parents sitting on the couch at my place.

When his mother, Liz Anderson saw me, she immediately stood up with teary eyes.

“Lucy, I’m asking you for a favor.

“The thing in Theo’s bag… Since the surveillance footage only shows the area right in front of the school, there’s still a chance to salvage it.

“Could you please tell the police that you secretly snuck that into his bag while you were on the way to school?

“I’ll give you two hundred thousand dollars. That’s more than enough money for you.”

I looked down and frowned.

In the past, I had helped Theo to escape from his fate. Far from being grateful toward me, they had actually praised Theo when he changed my college application.

“Didn’t she do as expected? Why would you need to be grateful for life?

“Stay far away from her. Don’t ruin your engagement with Flora.”

The Anderson family believed that it was a given that I had to sacrifice myself to help Theo.

“I’m not doing that.”

I freed my arm from her. Theo’s father, Peter Anderson slammed the table and stood up.

“How dare you? Why aren’t you listening to the adults? So what if you get into a good college?”

“I’m building my own future, and I won’t be selling off my future for just two hundred thousand dollars!”

My father put out his cigarette and yelled at me.

“So what if you admit to doing that? It’s not like it’ll have a huge consequence!

“With your ability, you won’t be able to get into a good college anyway. Now, there’s two hundred thousand dollars on the line! Why are you acting this immature?

“How many times do I have to tell you that your younger brother is planning to go into a private high school!”

No huge consequence?

In the past, after I saved Theo, I had lost my life.

“Mom, Dad, I will be able to get into a good college and give you double the amount they’re offering now.

“But I won’t be taking the blame this time.”

I turned around and went into my bedroom.

I flipped my revision book open and put on my headphones so I did not have to listen to their curses.

Very soon, it would all be over.

In the afternoon, Flora stopped me at the school entrance.

“Lucy, why didn’t you help Theo?”

I frowned.

She glanced around as she was afraid others would overhear our conversation.

“It’s not a big deal to take the blame for him. Now, he’s a suspect, and he’ll miss out on the chance to take the examinations. If worst comes to worst, he would go to jail! He won’t even get a fresh start!”

“I’m not the one who caused this,” I calmly answered.

She sounded anxious.

“How could you be so selfish? If he’s jailed, his future is ruined!

“It’s just a matter of taking the fall for him. Don’t you like him? Can’t you sacrifice your future for him?”

After I reached the train station, I wiped the sweat on my forehead. Then, I took out the precious letter from the inner compartment of my bag. To prevent my parents from noticing, Mary only transferred me four thousand and six hundred dollars to my bank account. She gave me the remaining three thousand dollars in cash and hid it in this bag.I panted and carefully put the money back. I turned around and saw Theo standing nearby. “Lucy, I heard you got into an Ivy League. “Congratulations, that’s always been your dream.” He looked even thinner. He no longer sounded as confident as he used to. I took a few steps back vigilantly. He smiled awkwardly and passed me a plastic bag. “Take these few apples. You can have them as snacks on the journey there.” I did not take them. He retreated a little awkwardly. “I… The police had looked into the matter. I indeed didn’t know about the gadget, but I didn’t manage to retake the examinations. The news went viral, and no schoo

“I really did not know that she’s the one who did that. She was talking nonsense the other day because she was afraid of taking sole responsibility. That’s why she dragged me in.”“Theo, I do know that you were unaware.” He was stunned. A hint of hope flashed in his eyes. “Can you be my witness then? I didn’t mean to frame you. I was too afraid, so I wasn’t thinking straight…”“You’re afraid, so you made me the scapegoat.”He shut his eyes in guilt. “Theo, surely you know how it feels to be taken away by the police in front of everyone. When you framed me, did you intend for me to feel the same way too?”“No, I was too afraid. That’s why I made the wrong decision.” “When you made that wrong decision, you only thought of using me as the scapegoat. Why didn’t you think of framing Flora instead?”He looked down. He was trying to find an answer, but he did not have one. I continued with my task on hand. After a while, I looked up and he had left. At night, I went back to M

In the end, she said, “At least they’re paying for additional expenses. That’s good.“You should save all your salary. Don’t simply spend it.“Ian wants a pair of sneakers that cost eight thousand dollars. I’ll send you the link.“Remember to buy it before his summer break. Don’t disappoint him.” Mary frowned when she heard that. She wanted to say something a few times, but I stopped her. I was used to such treatment. I humored them a little before hanging up. Then, I moved into the small bedroom in Mary’s house. Since my salary was given monthly, my parents did not bother me at all in between the paychecks. Two weeks later, I was preparing some simple syrup in the back kitchen when I heard someone mentioning my name at the front counter. “Hello, is Lucy working here?”It was Liz. Mary hesitantly called me out. Liz looked defeated. Her back was bent over, and she was sighing non-stop. Peter was standing beside her with a darkened expression. When Peter saw me, he sn

I did not say anything. He added, “Please help me, it’s very simple.“I’m begging you, Lucy. Don’t you like me the most?”I turned around to look at him. In the past, when I was locked in the basement by my parents, I had managed to escape once. However, when I went out, I bumped into Theo. He saw how disheveled I was, yet he stopped me from leaving. Then, he called my parents and said that I looked indecent before asking them to teach me a good lesson. I had been trembling in fear as I practically begged him to let me go. He only replied, “Lucy, so what if I can let you go? You didn’t treat Flora with the same kindness.” I lost all hope. My parents locked me up again, and they added two extra locks. Since then, I could not escape. I was left starving to death. Hence, I simply asked him, “Theo, I can let you go. But why wouldn’t you let me go?”After I said that, I turned around and went into the examination hall. I heard Flora’s cries and Theo’s yells from behin

Flora immediately teared up. She knew that she could accuse me of editing the video, but the nearby surveillance footage would be evidence too. After all, she was still a young woman. Officer Deacon might be bluffing, but she was terrified. Her voice was trembling. “I… I just wanted to scare him a little…“I didn’t mean to accuse him of cheating… I was just really angry at him for embarrassing me in front of so many people. He also has something for Lucy…” Officer Deacon interrupted her. “So, are you admitting that you’re the one who planted this gadget?”Tears streamed down her cheeks. She nodded. Theo had been listening to her from the side. He initially looked shocked, then he became angry. He started yelling, “You’re the one who did it?!“Flora, are you crazy? Why did you do that?“This examination is so important! This isn’t some minor test! We could be jailed if we get caught cheating!”Flora cried even harder when Theo yelled at her. “I was angry! You were on

Officer Deacon said reflexively, “In that case, you may come to the police station with your phone.” I shook my head resolutely. “If I went with you and proved my innocence at the police station, I wouldn’t be able to come back on time for my examinations.“This is a very important examination, and it’ll affect my college application. Is that a responsibility that you can shoulder?” They exchanged glances and then looked at Theo. Theo was dumbfounded. He still did not know who was the culprit. He just thought as long as he dragged me into the mess, I would be the scapegoat and go into the prison for him. Then, he would be the innocent victim. In that case, he would be able to retake his examinations. If I managed to clear my name, he would no longer have a scapegoat to blame on. “No… No way! You’re just stalling!” “All of you can watch the video together.” I passed my phone over and increased the screen brightness. I showed it to both the police and the reporters’
