Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: moonlight
I returned to the little apartment that belonged to me.

A stack of papers was still spread across the table—the strategic plan for Matthew’s business for the second half of the year, which I had spent an entire week preparing.

Channel expansion, networking, cash-flow schedules…

Every page was filled with notes I had written by hand, along with backup plans for every possible contingency.

I smiled faintly and fed the entire stack into the shredder.

When I was done, I opened my closet and packed my personal belongings and important documents into a suitcase.

Then I booked a flight back to Sicily.

As for Matthew, I had nothing left to say.Whatever had existed between us was over.

By the time I dragged my suitcase to the airport, the television screens in the departure hall were broadcasting the local news.

Matthew was wearing the dark-gray suit I had picked out for him.

With one arm around Lilith’s waist and their fingers intertwined, he smiled at the cameras.

Lilith leaned against him affectionately, her smile sweet and radiant.

“Matthew promised me the grandest wedding in the world,” she said. “He wants everyone to know that I’m the happiest bride in the world.”

That was the promise Matthew had made to Lilith.

Just like the promise he had once made to me.

He said he would give Lilith the best life and the brightest future.

Yet he seemed to have forgotten that I had secured his very first investment.

I had negotiated his very first business deal.

I had handled every difficult negotiation for him and written every single one of his business plans.

And now, I no longer intended to help him.

Sitting in the VIP lounge, I stared through the window at the planes taking off and landing outside.

And I found myself thinking back to the rainy night when I first met Matthew.

That was the year I experienced my first betrayal.

My best friend of twenty years had betrayed me.

She had invited me to Palermo to clear my head, only to secretly sell my information behind my back.

When my father had brought her before me, I had been completely stunned.

In the end, I executed her with my own hands.

Then I walked silently into the rain.

I sat alone by the river.

And then a black umbrella appeared above my head.

It was Matthew.

He had said, “I know this may be presumptuous, but may I sit with you for a while?”

His eyes had been so clear.

His expression had been so sincere.

That was the night I fell in love with him.

For him, I gave up everything.

I stayed quietly by his side, helping him climb higher, step by step, until I pushed him into a position of power.

Five years.

I thought we had both given each other our hearts.

I never imagined he could be this heartless.

Just then, my phone rang.

I glanced at the screen.

It was Matthew.

“Where are you?”

His tone had become firm.

“You must have seen the news by now. I promised Lilith the grandest wedding imaginable.”

“The finest dress and the best hotel—you need to arrange everything. Come on, sweetheart. You know I’m doing all this for our future.”

I listened to him and gave a soft laugh.

“Mr. Matthew, did you forget?”

“I already resigned.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

Then he sighed.

“Eve, are you still throwing a tantrum?”

“You know I have no foundation of my own. I need Lilith’s father’s help. Eve, just give me a little more time. I’ll give you everything you want.”

“You’ve always known how to put the bigger picture first, haven’t you?”

My voice remained calm.

“Mr. Matthew, I’m just a dispensable assistant.”

“How could an assistant like me possibly have access to the finest dress or the best hotel?”

“After all, you’re the one who can do anything in the business world now, aren’t you?”

There was silence on the other end for several seconds.

When Matthew spoke again, his voice had softened.

“Eve, I know you’re upset. But I’m still on my way up. Being with Lilith is the only way I can make the business more stable. If I announced that I was with you…”

Before he could finish, the airport announcement suddenly rang through the terminal.

Matthew immediately shouted, his voice filled with urgency,

“You’re at the airport? Where are you going ? ”

As the workday drew to an end, my car had just driven out through the gates when I spotted someone standing across the street. It was Matthew. He was wearing a wrinkled old coat. His hair was a complete mess, and his shoulders were hunched as though he'd lost a considerable amount of weight. The moment he saw my car, his eyes lit up.He immediately rushed over.“Eve! I really know I was wrong. Please, don't ignore me!”He grabbed onto my car window, his voice so hoarse that it was almost impossible to make out his words.“Those creditors have been waiting outside my place every day. I don't have the money to pay them!”“My house has been seized. My car was repossessed. Even the little money I had in my bank account has been frozen!”“I went to Lilith, but she wouldn't even see me!”“After her father was taken away, she started getting chased by creditors too. She ran off to Milan a long time ago!”As Matthew spoke, tears began streaming down his face.Mixed with mucus, they smeared acr

“Eve… please. Help me…”Matthew's voice trembled on the other end, almost pleading.“All of those business partners are suing me!”“The banks are demanding repayment. Several shipments of mine are being held at the docks, and they won't let me move them!”“Lilith's father is in trouble himself. He can't do anything for me anymore!”“Eve, it took me five years to finally get where I am today.”“If I lose all of this, I'll have nothing left!”“I've already broken up with Lilith. I swear!”“I told her to her face that there was nothing between us anymore!”“As long as you restore those business connections for me, I'll do anything!”“Eve, can we start over?”“You still love me, don't you?”Matthew's voice sounded like a drowning man desperately reaching for the last piece of driftwood keeping him afloat.Over the past few days, he and Lilith had been subjected to an overwhelming wave of online backlash. After the Moretti family intervened, Mayor Bianchi was formally placed under investiga

I paid no attention to the online backlash. After all, I had officially taken over the family's entire business. That night, my father called me into his study. He formally handed me the family seal and the key to the family safe.“My mother and I have wanted to retire for a long time,” he said. “Now that you've finally come home, we can finally put our minds at ease.”I looked into his slightly clouded eyes and nodded.I didn't say anything.I simply put the key and the family seal into my bag.My parents wanted to spend some time in Sardinia. It was quiet there, with clean air and beautiful scenery. My mother had been talking about going for years.I agreed. Then I personally drove them to the airport.I stood in the terminal for a while, watching their two figures disappear farther and farther beyond the security checkpoint.Only then did I turn around to leave.Just then, my phone rang.An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.I answered.“Eve, why?!”“Why didn't you tell me yo

I listened to Matthew's voice on the other end of the phone and smiled. Then I spoke calmly.“Mr. Matthew, I'm not sure what you mean.”“How did you convince every single one of my business partners to cut ties with me?”“Eve, so you really did have something going on with those business partners, didn't you?!”“I always suspected it. Otherwise, how could you possibly have secured all those deals so easily?”Matthew's furious voice exploded through the phone. It sounded as though he'd been holding back his anger all day, and now it had finally reached its breaking point.“I'm warning you, Eve. Restore all of the company's partnerships immediately.”“Then come back and arrange the guest list and venue for next week's wedding banquet.”“If you do that, I'll forgive you!”“Otherwise, Lilith and her father won't let you off the hook!”I shook my head.“Mr. Matthew, you're overthinking this.”I paused for a moment.“Oh, and there's something else.”“All of the business agreements between th

“Eve, even if that's true, you're still my assistant! You have to come back!”Matthew's voice on the other end was frantic and anxious, nothing like the calm and composed man he'd been at the celebration banquet that night.I leaned against the headboard and let out a soft laugh.“Mr. Matthew, you said it yourself. I'm only your assistant.”“So I have no obligation to maintain your business connections, build your network, or continue paving the way for you.”Matthew completely lost his composure.“Eve, didn't you say you loved me?!”His voice suddenly rose, almost hysterical.“Is this how you treat the man you love?!”“You cut off those connections just like that, and now my cash flow is completely frozen!”“Eve, I'm supposed to meet Lilith's father next week to discuss a government contract. You’ve left me in this state. How am I supposed to show my face?!”“If you love me, then you should help me!”Listening to the sheer entitlement in his voice, I gave a quiet laugh.“I'm sorry, Mr

“ Mr. Matthew. I'm going home.”“As for whatever is going on between you and Miss Lilith, that's none of my business anymore.”I smiled faintly and continued.“Oh, and there's something else you should know.”“For the past five years, every business connection and partnership your company has had was established through me.”“The partners have already called me . Starting today, they'll be cutting all ties with you.”There was a brief silence on the other end. Then Matthew's voice suddenly rose.“Eve, have you lost your mind?! I worked my ass off to secure those partnerships! What gives you the right to take them away?!”“What gives me the right?”I let out a soft laugh.I didn't answer.I gave Matthew no chance to question me further. I hung up and immediately blocked his number.By the time the plane took off, the lights of Rome had gradually faded into a blur of distant points through the airplane window.I leaned back against my seat and closed my eyes. When the plane landed in Sic
