Chapter 3

Auteur: moonlight
“ Mr. Matthew. I'm going home.”

“As for whatever is going on between you and Miss Lilith, that's none of my business anymore.”

I smiled faintly and continued.

“Oh, and there's something else you should know.”

“For the past five years, every business connection and partnership your company has had was established through me.”

“The partners have already called me . Starting today, they'll be cutting all ties with you.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

Then Matthew's voice suddenly rose.

“Eve, have you lost your mind?! I worked my ass off to secure those partnerships! What gives you the right to take them away?!”

“What gives me the right?”

I let out a soft laugh.

I didn't answer.

I gave Matthew no chance to question me further. I hung up and immediately blocked his number.

By the time the plane took off, the lights of Rome had gradually faded into a blur of distant points through the airplane window.

I leaned back against my seat and closed my eyes.

When the plane landed in Sicily, it was already well past midnight.

A black limousine was waiting outside the airport.

Beside it stood a gray-haired man in a perfectly tailored dark coat.

The moment he saw me walk out, the tension in his expression finally eased.

“Father.”

I walked over and called him softly.

He stared at me in silence for several seconds.

Then he reached out and ruffled my hair roughly.

“You've lost weight.”

His voice was slightly hoarse.

“Get in the car. Your mother made your favorite stew. She's been waiting for you for four hours.”

I got into the car.

As the familiar streets blurred past the window, I felt the weight that had been pressing down on my heart for five years finally lift.

When I arrived home, my mother hugged me and cried for a long while.

My father stood nearby, smoking with a grim expression.

So much ash had fallen onto the floor that he hadn't even noticed.

“Come to think of it, if you hadn't insisted back then, that boy wouldn't have gotten the Naples business connections at all.”

My father looked at me, his voice filled with helplessness.

“You were the one who begged me to give him a chance.”

It was true.

Matthew's very first fortune had come from the opportunity I'd begged my father to give him.

After that, every partner who worked with Matthew had been willing to offer him their best terms simply because they wanted to curry favor with the Moretti family.

But once Matthew's company finally got on its feet, he became increasingly cold toward me.

That was when I began to realize that Matthew didn't love me.

Or perhaps he simply didn't love me nearly as much as I'd believed.

Still, somewhere deep in my heart, I had held on to the smallest sliver of hope.

I never thought that, in the end, things would turn out like this.

“By the way,” my father said, “the contract we had with that boy's company has already expired.”

“Do you want to renew it?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Back then, I had begged my father to help Matthew because of my relationship with him.

With the Moretti family's backing, no one had dared to make things difficult for Matthew.

But now, Matthew and I had nothing to do with each other anymore.

So why should I continue helping him?

I returned to my room on the second floor.

Everything was exactly as it had been five years ago when I left.

The sheets had been freshly changed, carrying the clean scent of laundry.

I washed my face and was just about to lie down when my phone suddenly rang again.

An unfamiliar number flashed across the screen.

But I recognized the area code.

I answered.

“Eve, where the hell did you go?!”

“Mr. Matthew, where I go has anything to do with you?”

My voice was calm, as if I were speaking to a complete stranger.

“Do you even know what you're doing?!”

His voice rose again, unmistakably angry.

“How can you just leave without saying a word? You're still my assistant! Your work isn't finished!”

“Eve, don't push me too far!”

Listening to his utterly self-righteous tone, I couldn't help but laugh.

“Mr. Matthew, I think you've forgotten something.”

“For the past five years, I may have been your assistant, but we never signed an employment contract.”

“And for those five years, you never paid me a single cent.”

There was sudden silence on the other end.

It seemed he'd genuinely forgotten.

For five years, the only things he'd ever given me were one empty promise after another.

I'll pay you back later.

I'll make it up to you someday.

I had stayed up countless nights with him.

I had fought through countless brutal negotiations on his behalf.

I had even poured my own money into his company more times than I could count.

And somehow, he'd forgotten all of it.

As the workday drew to an end, my car had just driven out through the gates when I spotted someone standing across the street. It was Matthew. He was wearing a wrinkled old coat. His hair was a complete mess, and his shoulders were hunched as though he'd lost a considerable amount of weight. The moment he saw my car, his eyes lit up.He immediately rushed over.“Eve! I really know I was wrong. Please, don't ignore me!”He grabbed onto my car window, his voice so hoarse that it was almost impossible to make out his words.“Those creditors have been waiting outside my place every day. I don't have the money to pay them!”“My house has been seized. My car was repossessed. Even the little money I had in my bank account has been frozen!”“I went to Lilith, but she wouldn't even see me!”“After her father was taken away, she started getting chased by creditors too. She ran off to Milan a long time ago!”As Matthew spoke, tears began streaming down his face.Mixed with mucus, they smeared acr

“Eve… please. Help me…”Matthew's voice trembled on the other end, almost pleading.“All of those business partners are suing me!”“The banks are demanding repayment. Several shipments of mine are being held at the docks, and they won't let me move them!”“Lilith's father is in trouble himself. He can't do anything for me anymore!”“Eve, it took me five years to finally get where I am today.”“If I lose all of this, I'll have nothing left!”“I've already broken up with Lilith. I swear!”“I told her to her face that there was nothing between us anymore!”“As long as you restore those business connections for me, I'll do anything!”“Eve, can we start over?”“You still love me, don't you?”Matthew's voice sounded like a drowning man desperately reaching for the last piece of driftwood keeping him afloat.Over the past few days, he and Lilith had been subjected to an overwhelming wave of online backlash. After the Moretti family intervened, Mayor Bianchi was formally placed under investiga

I paid no attention to the online backlash. After all, I had officially taken over the family's entire business. That night, my father called me into his study. He formally handed me the family seal and the key to the family safe.“My mother and I have wanted to retire for a long time,” he said. “Now that you've finally come home, we can finally put our minds at ease.”I looked into his slightly clouded eyes and nodded.I didn't say anything.I simply put the key and the family seal into my bag.My parents wanted to spend some time in Sardinia. It was quiet there, with clean air and beautiful scenery. My mother had been talking about going for years.I agreed. Then I personally drove them to the airport.I stood in the terminal for a while, watching their two figures disappear farther and farther beyond the security checkpoint.Only then did I turn around to leave.Just then, my phone rang.An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.I answered.“Eve, why?!”“Why didn't you tell me yo

I listened to Matthew's voice on the other end of the phone and smiled. Then I spoke calmly.“Mr. Matthew, I'm not sure what you mean.”“How did you convince every single one of my business partners to cut ties with me?”“Eve, so you really did have something going on with those business partners, didn't you?!”“I always suspected it. Otherwise, how could you possibly have secured all those deals so easily?”Matthew's furious voice exploded through the phone. It sounded as though he'd been holding back his anger all day, and now it had finally reached its breaking point.“I'm warning you, Eve. Restore all of the company's partnerships immediately.”“Then come back and arrange the guest list and venue for next week's wedding banquet.”“If you do that, I'll forgive you!”“Otherwise, Lilith and her father won't let you off the hook!”I shook my head.“Mr. Matthew, you're overthinking this.”I paused for a moment.“Oh, and there's something else.”“All of the business agreements between th

“Eve, even if that's true, you're still my assistant! You have to come back!”Matthew's voice on the other end was frantic and anxious, nothing like the calm and composed man he'd been at the celebration banquet that night.I leaned against the headboard and let out a soft laugh.“Mr. Matthew, you said it yourself. I'm only your assistant.”“So I have no obligation to maintain your business connections, build your network, or continue paving the way for you.”Matthew completely lost his composure.“Eve, didn't you say you loved me?!”His voice suddenly rose, almost hysterical.“Is this how you treat the man you love?!”“You cut off those connections just like that, and now my cash flow is completely frozen!”“Eve, I'm supposed to meet Lilith's father next week to discuss a government contract. You’ve left me in this state. How am I supposed to show my face?!”“If you love me, then you should help me!”Listening to the sheer entitlement in his voice, I gave a quiet laugh.“I'm sorry, Mr
